A Typical Day at the Ashram. A huge, very loud bell is rung at 5.a.m. to say that chai (tea) is ready in the kitchen. Much as I love chai, I really don’t love it that much, so I roll over and go back to sleep. The next bell is at 6 and that’s for the children’s fitness, yoga, prayers etcetera. Once again, I try to perfect the art of rolling over and going back to sleep, but not for too long. About 6.30 I take my bucket and walk to the other side of the building to where the geezers are and get some hot water, although lately I haven’t bothered as it’s good to have a cold one. Then back to my room for a quick bucket shower. If I have washing to do, ... read more

Looking around a couple of mornings ago and we all realised that one pup was missing. We searched inside and out and called and called, but to no avail. Then the next day the pup w2as back but with a huge gash on its upper front leg. I only glimpsed it as I’m not very good with this sort of thing. It also didn’t make me feel good to hear that there were maggots in the wound. Groan!!!!!!! Jianna took him to the vet, (yes, I went halves with the cost again) and came back with medication and bandages. It probably needed to be stitched but that didn’t happen. Dogs aren’t worth that here. Anyway, Jianna looked after the puppy in her room, changed bandages, fed it baby food and all was O.K. But early this ... read more

Lying in bed a few nights ago and about to go sleep when I heard strange loud yelling noised outside my room. Luckily I am on the first floor so didn’t feel too perturbed. Then more really loud shouts and grunts followed by demonic laughter. Also a whistle was being blown long and hard in between all of this. These noises would get quieter as the person moved away and then get louder again as he got closer. Occasionally I could see torch light flashing on my ceiling. This made me feel very uncomfortable. Was someone trying to spy on me? Could he get up to the first floor? My heart is thumping at this stage. Then to make matters worse, I heard what sounded like a couple of gun shots. I thought that it ... read more

At last this morning, I managed to get up in time for 6a.m. chai and then head off on my walk to the holy Ganga River, with one of the Ashram dogs for company. It was still beautifully cool and the light was wonderful. I only saw a few people on the way, but each time I did they would either say or make the hand sign for Namaste. It is so gentle and friendly here. After 20 minutes, there was the Ganga. It was very peaceful with only a few people about. A woman washing her cooking utensils, a young girl rinsing her hands, a few men cleaning their teeth and bathing. I sat on a large stone and splashed some of the water on my face, it’s what you do. I didn’t take ... read more
