A shared room. For the first time since my travels began I am in a hotel. A small simple place in the heart of Kathmandu. A bit of a tourist area but I felt that I needed a bit of R & R and having a choice of where to eat is wonderful after the ashram. When I unpacked I noticed that I had a companion in the wardrobe. A rather large cockroach. Now, I didn’t freak out as I usually would - you get used to all sorts of things in India (apart from spiders!) I tried to bash it with a shoe but it was quicker than me. So I made sure that the door was firmly closed and later went to bed. At about 12.30.a.m. I heard scratching sounds in my room. I ... read more

After my first night at the orphange and once the children had all gone off to school, I decided to take a walk around the area. It is stunning as you can see. I was even invited to sit on the verandah with a lovely old lady. We had a chat for about 20 minutes with neither of us speaking the same language as the other. But we managed. She asked if I would like a drink of water and I worked out that she was making wicks for oil burners out of goats wool. Then her husband came back with a wicker basket on his back with grass and weeds for the calf. We then sat and admired the view from their house. The roll of thunder in the distance and the blackening sky pursuaded ... read more

Last day in Haridwar. Andrea and Pradeep had been so good to me and we had had such fun together in Shimla etc, that I wanted to get them a little farewell gift. Now they only have one comfortable chair in their place, the others are just plastic stacking chairs (great in the heat!) so I decided to buy them another chair. The one they have is a big wicker one a bit like the old Papa San chairs and I had seen them for sale on the side of the road just before Haridwar. So Monika and I set of the buy one. I thought about AU$20 would be ok. When we got there, the guy selling them had very little English but managed to tell us 800rp. I thought that was ok, then he ... read more

The next day we said goodbye to our hosts and headed down a path this time and the scenery was even more beautiful. People would happily pay to go on hikes through this part of the country. I am not into difficult walks but this was something else. Another maniacal 4 hour drive then we are back in Shimla at a more central and better hotel - or so we thought. Shimla really is beautiful. Lots of little narrow markets, large wide walk ways with views of the Himalayas. Good food - even booze! The weather was cool but bright, we loved it. The hotel certainly wasn’t 4 star, but was reasonably priced and boasted ‘hot and cold running water”. Some places only have cold. Unfortunately we only had water - hot or cold, for half ... read more

The views are stunning everywhere.
Unlike Darjeeling, Shimla has wonderful wide open areas.
I think this one could be going cheap.

Andrea and Padeep were invited to a wedding just out of Shimla and asked Monika and I if we would like to go. Naturally we said yes and hence out trip to the mountains began. The trip stared with a train journey from Haridwar to Chandigarh on a sleeper train. It wasn’t overnight but was great having bunks to relax on. For some crazy reason, I decided to climb up to the top of a three tiered bunk. Nice and peaceful though. We ate lots as people come around with food all the time and it’s good and inexpensive. Isha (16 months) was really good and we played peek-a-boo over the edge of the bunk. Hence the strange angle of then photo! Once in Chandigarh we raced by a very packed auto rickshaw to the bus ... read more

Mrs. Nandi, the principal really wants to change the way learning occurs in the school and we are working hard together to achieve this. I have been working at the bottom, nursery class, as we figured this was the best place to start. There are 40 three and four year olds in this class and when I first went in, they were sitting in rows, with their bags on their desks doing nothing. Some were even asleep. The teacher was calling them out one by one to write the letters of the alphabet in their copy books. BORING! Things have changed as you can see from the photographs. I have made the desks into groups, bags are kept outside the classroom and there is a different activity on each group of tables, which I have introduced ... read more

Monika and I went with a few of the older ashram girls to see some of the temples around Haridwar. Two were reached by cable care but they call rope way. I thought we were going to be pulling ourselves up by a rope! The girls walked up but Monika and I were very grateful for the cable cars. The temples were packed. I was quite disappointed and found them very unspiritual. We all queued up, when it was our turn it was, donation here, dot on the forehead, cotton tied around the wrist, a wack on the back while a few words were chanted then “next”! It was really noisy, some of the priests were on their mobiles the whole time, hawkers were selling tacky souvenirs, everyone was pushing and shoving to get in front ... read more

I went to the wedding of a staff member at school about 10 days ago (sorry, got behind on my blog) with a few people from the ashram. The usual Indian type where everybody mills around, eats from a huge choice of food being freshly cooked and drinks lots of Fanta and Sprite. No, no alcohol! It was fun and a great excuse to get dressed up, which is something I never have a need to do at the ashram. Luckily there was an amazing pure silk embroidered salwar kameez which fitted perfectly in the trunk. I’ve told you about ‘the trunk’ before. We did get to see the groom, but the photo didn’t come out too well so I haven’t included it. We left at about 11.30.p.m, really late for us early risers and the ... read more
