An Ode to My little red shoes I set off on my journey, With my suitcase full of gear, I don’t know where I’m going, But I sure am leaving here. And I’m walking in my red shoes, I know they won’t let me down. My red shoes keep me moving, I go from town to town. I’m walking around India, The people tend to stare, They don’t mind my red shoes, But they sure look at my hair. And I’m walking in my red shoes, Through the dirt and dust and grime, My red shoes keep me moving, Come hail, rain or shine. When walking through the monsoon, My red shoes can be seen, Don’t worry ‘bout the water, ‘Cause they’re made of Neoprene. And I’m walking in my red shoes, They hold my feet ... read more

My son in Toby is now branching out into making chocolate, right from the bean to the bar and I had the dubious please of helping with the first batch. I say dubious as I thought that if all went wrong, then I would have to share the blame! This venture is taking place at an area near Ubud called Antap and it’s stunning. It is where Toby’s wife Inda has the elephant trekking and white water rafting camp. If you come to Bali you must come here. “A True Balinese Experience” is the company and as well as going on a great trek on elephants you may be able to taste Toby’s chocolate. First I was shown a few batched of cocoa beans being dried in the sun. They have already gone through the fermentation ... read more

“To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant pure brute strength, the, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not great powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her man could not be. If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with woman…..Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart then woman?” Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – Mahatma. ... read more

I arrived back in Bali and Inda was there to meet me at the Ngurah Rai airport, Toby being on business in Papua. It was great to see Jayden and Tasha again, it felt like I had never left. In the mornings I here, “Oma, Oma!” outside my door, which means get up and open the door and let us in. O.K. Cool with me. Their English is getting better and better, thank heavens as my Balinese isn’t, they even translate for me. Tasha has been doing this for a while but now Jayden is too! It was Inda’s ottonan a few days after I arrived, ottonan being the Balinese birthday as opposed to the western calendar one. It was on a full moon day which was very auspicious so it was off to the Padanda ... read more

Wow! I Can’t believe how much I have done since I last wrote. I did eventually move out of the crazy hotel with all the “ladyboys” as the locals call them, the screaming to each other just got too much. There were another couple of placed that I was interested in but they had both suffered from the incredible downpours we had and were not taking guests. I eventually found a place called the Samui Mermaid at Big Buddha beach – with a name like that I should have gone there in the first place, and it was lovely. I had a clean and tidy little cottage with T.V. and a fridge for just a couple of dollars more than the last place. Much better value. Two swimming pools, lots of places within walking distance, which ... read more

I visited the local village a couple of days ago to buy a mosquito net and I was almost back when a motorbike stopped next to me with two of the boy/girls from the hotel on it. They gestured for me to get on the back and I did. My first experience as one of three on a bike. I have had three rooms at the New Lapaz. The first one was O.K. but when I saw inside the end cabin that a couple was leaving and it had a mosquito net, I decided I wanted that one. I moved all my stuff but the net was gone. It belonged to the couple who moved out. That’s why I went to the village to buy my own. It is huge and I feel that I am ... read more

Of course you should not be hearing from me now, I have supposed to be on a silent meditation retreat in Surat Thani. Well, I’m not - obviously. When I left my hotel in Bangkok, as I was travelling within Thailand I got a taxi to the domestic airport. Wrong! Most domestic flights go from the international terminal and are they close together? No! My flight was leaving in an hour from an airport that was nearly an hour away. I had about 15 minutes of aaaargh. I couldn’t get a later flight as that would get me to the monastery after dark and no one is at the gates then to let me in and registration for the course closed at 3pm anyway. What to do? After texts and phone calls with the ex (they ... read more

Ooops, out of order! I just found some photos of Galle and the Turtle hatchery that I had meant to post before the Bangkok blog. Oh well! Galle is wonderful atmospheric town with an old fort. It was hit really hard by the tsunami as the sea came in from both sides of the protruding ramparts. The turtle hatchery was great, they really do an amazing job. They buy the turtle eggs from the villagers at a slightly higher price than they can get for them at the market (it is illegal of course for the villagers to sell them) and then bury them. Once they hatch, they are kept for 3 days then released into the sea at night. This gives them a better chance than they would normally have although the mortality rate is ... read more

Day 1. Arrive Bangkok, check into the hotel and upgrade to a better room as the basic is just that. Walk to the Bumrungrad Hospital (is it a hospital or a 5 star hotel?) and get the suspicious looking mole on my arm looked at. Next thing I know I am laying on a bed being very gently whittled and then sewn up with 5 miniature stitches, too keep me looking beautiful she says. Day 2. Back to Bumrungrad Hospital to the dental department this time to get the tooth that has been paining me for the last 3 months seen to. I think it is one tooth, she thinks it is another. Puts cold water on the one she thinks is the problem then has to get me off the ceiling with a scraper. Double ... read more

The Getting of Wisdom and Daughters. This time in India is quite different than the last, as instead of giving I am getting - daughters and knowledge! The first daughter was Verena, a German girl I met in Coimbatore. She was looking for a quick fix to her problems, but found a suspect Guru and me instead. Neither of which I believe sorted out her problems - I tried to tell her only she could do that, but I like to think that I helped in a small way and I can guarantee I was more use than the charismatic swami. She still calls me now and then and says how she loves to hear my happy voice and misses me. Maybe we shall catch up again sometime, or maybe she will find happiness and forget ... read more
