I had promised Raju last year that when I next came to Kathmandu I would go with him to visit his family in the village of Kavre in the mountains. The nearest town that you would probably find on any map is Sindhuli. It is south east of Kathmandu and took us an hour by taxi to Banepa, then we took a big beaten up bus for about 4 hours to the village then walked for about an hour down from the top of the mountain to his house, along what you would call goat tracks, beautiful but at times precarious. I had never been off road on a bus before and that is what we did. Bus route? No way! The views where something to behold but I often had the feeling that I was ... read more

Before I left the ashram at Rishikesh, I had visitors outside my little cottage, the ashram cows! They even walked up onto the tiles to see me. More like dogs than cows, they really enjoyed having their heads rubbed. Then is was farewell to everyone and off at 5 the next morning. Taxi to Haridwar railway station, train to Delhi, overnight at a lovely guesthouse (not many of those in Delhi) then off to the airport by mid-morning. Flying into Kathmandu is wonderful, it is such a beautiful place, well not Kathmandu exactly but Nepal with all the mountains. Francesca was so excited as we flew in that it was infectious. So here I am back in Kathmandu and how fabulous it was to be met by Raju and his family. His two children Rajan and ... read more

On the Road to Tarkeshwar The Canadian boys - Ivan and Greg, Karina (French part of Canada), Francesca (Italy), Silvia (U.S.A) and I survived the 6 hours taxi ride to Tarkeshwar. Some of the drive was spectacular if a little scary. We drove through one area of mountainous road where there had been a bit of a land slide and left the spare wheel behind in the mud. It was soon retrieved and hoisted onto the roof rack. At last we arrived, all be it a tad bone sore at this little peace of heaven far, far from the madding crowds of India. I think we all breathed a collective deep sigh. This is where Swami Rama lived for many months.(It is Swami Rama’s ashram where I am staying in Rishikesh).Tarkeshwar has a small very old ... read more

Leaving Kaivalyadharma was quite sad, even though it was a bit like a prison at times. I had learned so much that there was no turning back from yoga and I had also made many, many great friends. But it was time to head off to Mumbai to stay at a 5 star hotel with Kerry, a friend from Adelaide and to catch up with my roomie Shilpa. The Trident in Mumbai, right on the water front was pure luxury after the ashram and being on the 20th floor felt like we were out at sea. Shipla was a wonderful hostess and took us out and about Mumbai. We saw and went to places that we would have never found on our own and had some great meals. I especially loved going to Leopold’s and if ... read more

I thought that the fluro strip in the taxi and the drivers black plastic bag as a rain hat was novel in Mumbai.

I managed to get myself into a wonderful 6 week residency course at Lonavla in Maharastra. Harish, the owner of Kaivalyam in Munnar had suggested that I do the course as he had completed it some time before. And that’s why no one has heard from me for so long! I have been totally consumed with study, study, study. Wow, what a course. The subjects covered were at university level - Structure and Functions of the Human Body, Ancient Yogic Texts, Yoga and Mental Health, Values Education, Yoga and Physical Education. Not to mention 3 - 4 hours of practical yoga each day. I LOVED IT. The girls were great and they treated me just like one of them even though I was old enough to be their mother. I also surprised everyone by doing very ... read more

I think that my last blog was when I was in Munnar, a wonderful tea plantation area in Kerala and since then I have done so much. I will fill you in as succinctly as possible and bring you up to date. In Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu I worked for a foundation and ashram who are attempting, and are on their way to succeeding, in putting a school in every rural village of Tamil Nadu. My job was to train a group of teachers in how to run a school library. It was completely back to basics, but the teachers were wonderful and I enjoyed every minute of it. At first I was sharing a room with three others, which was a first and one I wasn’t that happy about, but the girls ... read more

Now let me tell you about how I came to be staying in such a beautiful place as Kaivalyam Yoga Retreat. Back at the beautiful Rose Garden homestay, I called Kaivalyam and asked if I could stay until the 7th. In previous emails I had established that this place was too expensive for me but they said that I could stay at a homestay nearby and still come to Kaivalyam for all my food and yoga. This was at a heavily reduced price which I could afford and this is what I asked for. Harish said that there was plenty of room and I could stay with them for the same price. Wow! Well this place is like a 5 star retreat. It’s only been open for 2 weeks so some things aren’t quite finished, but ... read more

I spent what ended up being my last day in Tamil Nadu on the back of Heidi’s motorbike looking around Auroville. She explained how Auroville works and showed me some beautiful community buildings and homes. It’s a very interesting place. She even booked for the two of us to go into the Matri Mandir for mediation, an experience not to be missed. Thank you Heidi. I had time for a bit of a rest - I needed it, then I walked to a favourite restaurant to meet Susan for dinner. While I was waiting I had a call from the ISHA foundation where I shall be working in Coimbatore saying that they could not give me accommodation until 7th April. So what to do until then? When Susan arrived I told her about the conversation that ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Pondicherry March 27th 2010

I have had requests from friends to update my blog for India, so here is a very quick one! Pondicherry is as wonderful as I remember it from last year. In fact I was supposed to be going to Ooty but cancelled that so that I could stay longer here. There are not many photos because I have been too busy doing things, meeting amazing people, reading incredibly inspiring books and meditating. What have I done to deserve this I wonder. On prompting from friends, once again, I have been keeping a journal, here is my second day in Pondi. 21st March This is where I wanted to stay last time I was in Pondi but it was full. Now here I am in my sparse but adequate and clean room, with a private bathroom, a ... read more
