Today was a long drive day. We put in a 17 hour drive. We have to be in Seattle by Sunday. We left around 7 AM. We hoped for 6 AM. It's more peaceful driving in the morning. The kids have been reading, doing some homework, watched a couple of movies and played a continuous game of The ... read more

Well, we are 18 hours from departure. My usual plan for one week before our trip is to clean the car and start packing it with essentials. I have everyone start packing their clothes for the drawers in the car and pack their backpacks with sleepwear ("Jammie's" is not an acceptable terms these days particularly because underwear is the sleepwear of choice.), socks, underwear and bathing suits which we need every night in the hotel. I figure out what food we need to pack for the road and for our first major stop. I also clean the house so we come home to a nice house. This year is a little different. Last week, we took our van into the shop for an oil change and to check a noise we heard. They have had our ... read more

Geo: 44.6639, -86.0181We are at Platte River Campground. We go home Friday. Kind of sad. We've had fun. It's kind of cool how all of the campgrounds are so different and offer different things. This one is a state park with state regulations. It clean, it's spacious, it has paths and roads leading to things to do by foot, by car or by bike. We've been riding our bikes everywhere. Again, we are so glad we brought our bikes.Today, we got up and headed to the Tubing place at the entrance to the campground. We road our bikes. Convenient. We got there about 10:30 because the lady told me a big party was coming soon. She asked when I'd like to come and I said, "when that big party isn't." We went on a 2 hour ... read more

Geo: 44.6639, -86.0181Today, we packed up to go back to the LP. We really enjoyed the UP. We met our neighbor campers the night before. Turns out they live a 1/2 mile from us and go to Harlan. How crazy. It was two dads (one divorced and the other not sure) and their kids, a boy and a girl. The girl loved Elizabeth. The boy stayed with his dad. He had a traumatic experience the night before. They were on the sunset cruise that returned around ten PM in the dark. The boy was on the dock with his uncle looking up at his dad on the second level and fell off the dock between the boat and the dock (IN LAKE SUPERIOR). The uncle dove in after him and found him six feet below. Others ... read more

Geo: 46.4111, -86.6478I woke up this morning and made my coffee while some still slept and some were rousing. I took a couple of blueberry muffins and my coffee and stepped outside. You could not see Otter Lake because it was blanketed in fog. Pretty. I worked up a fire in the fire pit though it was kind of hard because everything was damp with dew. I managed to make one while I could feel a seasoned couple watching me from a couple sites over thinking this city girl can't make a fire. I showed them. By the time, I got the fire started, I could see the lake. By the time, the first child came out, it was hiding again. Weird. Elizabeth came out and wanted to fish. So, she and I grabbed our poles ... read more

Geo: 45.1134, -83.5568Last night we arrived at Campers Cove in Alpena on Thunder Bay river which looks more like a lake. I chose an end site (last October) next to the fishing pond. It's a great site because it is huge and we only have someone on one side of us and it is opposite the side we hang out on.. Though, I must say that the people around us are so nice. We were clueless when we arrived. All the hookups are on the side of the other camper next to us where a kind elderly gentleman saw us in our time of need. He hobbled over (though he had a scooter for easier mobility) and asked if we needed help. Yes Please! His name is John. John knows everyone around us. Paul calls him ... read more

Geo: 42.5459, -83.2155The Houseys are on a new adventure. We are RVing! I will admit that I had difficulty sleeping last night. I was going through checklists and trying to figure out what will fit in the vehicle..or not. I suppose it's similar to our first US roadtrip. You don't know what to expect so you try to be proactive. What if this happens, what if I need that, what if that happens...etc. But, we are only traveling in Michigan which close enough to home that we can come home if we need to. So this morning, Paul and I drove out to General RV in Wixom to pick up our "rig" with much apprehension. This is not a cheap venture if I might say. I think it will be more expensive than our 16 day ... read more
