Today I got to wake up nice and early and check out the Reichstag, really cool inside, an elevator takes you right up and there is even a cafe, the cool thing was going up the dome and you can see right into the parliment when they are in session. I decided to also check out Check Point Charlie today and it was also amazing, an older woman walking by stopped and told me her story about the wall, it turns out her aparment was in East Berlin and her window opened to West Berlin and she talked about how the Russians blocked off her window. It was a really interesting museum, very long, it turns out a lot of these places do not allow photography sadly, I did not realize that until halfway through haha. ... read more

Today I had more time to breath and see the city. I spent most of my day in the large city park, this city has such history its amazing, I got a closer look at the Soviet Memorial to fallen soldiers, it was interesting to see, they had two tanks and two cannons! Sadly, reservations are needed to go in the Reichstag, but I got some made for tomorrow luckily! I figured I would check out the "underground" of Berlin too, it takes you into bunkers and air raid shelters from WW2. I can say too, the scariest thing that I have done on this trip is to go up the Siegeseele, it is rediculously high. What is odd, is the effect the war had on Germany today, therer are still bullet holes littering monuments and ... read more

It was sad to say "Auf Wiedersehen" to Hamburg and Fanny and Kolja, but off to Berlin. The ride was short and fast with and ICE train, hour and a half. The train was surprisingly full. The trainstation here is also amazing so big! After confusion of trying to get to the hostel it turned out the stop I needed was around the corner from the stop I was at. My goal for today was to see the Public Viewing in Berlin and I accomplished that! Besides being frisked twice to get in it was really fun, there were around 500,000 people I heard, I got to Berlin, to hostel then left right away to public viewing, I got there 2 hrs early and it paid off! I got right up close to the front, about ... read more

So today I woke up early with Kolja and I observed two English classes in Germany. The students English was very good and we had a debate in class where I played the "devils advocate", the kids where very interested in American life, aparently, they learn mostly about England, but the kids asked me questions like: "Do all Americans like fast food?" "Do I own any guns?" "Are there Indians where you live?" To this I responded, "Only a baseball team." Surprisingly they knew about the Cleveland Indians and asked if I liked Lebron James too. It was weird to speak in English again, I felt like that part of my brain turned off. After I saw Kolja coming back from his field trip and I wandered the city a little bit and walked through the ... read more

So going out this morining I got whats called Mett, a raw pork spread on bread yummm! Kolja and I road the ferry up the Elbe River and he explained a lot to me, him being from Hamburg can explin a lot. We alsowent under the Elbe as well, they had to build tunnels because you cannot build a bridge (prevents ships). Aparently Hamburg and Berlin are debating who has the best Kurrywurst, I will say Hamburgs was pretty good. After grabbing lunch with Fanny (which we did find a memorial to a Fanny Mendelsohn right by her work) we checked out some local stores, a five story version of Dicks Sporting goods and a six story Game/movie/electronics store, which was super awesome, they had almost any game and movie you could want, aisles of wii ... read more

Today was a busy day, woke up early to go to work with Kolja, the school system here is way different! I cannot even being to explain how, I can say I was jealous of his two class preps for the day and having tomorrow off. I spoke to the kids about the catholic school and they were shocked about our uniform policy. After school, Kolja and I checked out downtown, he comes from Hamburg and for the most part has stayed here and we had a lot to see, sadly Mark was not with us to see the lego store here, they even had a Simpsons house build with characters for an amazing price of 200 €, I did manage to refrain from buying it. The room here is so comfortable too. I did actually ... read more

First, my title I chose was because a resident of Hamburg is called a Hamburger. Anyways...arriving to Hamburg today was quite easy, I had to backtrack sadly back to Köln from Aachen, but very easy to get to and find. Train travel here is simply amazing. I finally arrived here at 15.30 and Fanny met me at the trainstation. The apartment they have is really nice and has a large guest room as well. It has been nice having someone to speak all day with in German and tomorrow I am excited to experience German high school, I will be in a Chemistry and Biology class tomorrow and on Wednesday I will be in a English class which should be fun as well, seeing the language from their point of view. Hamburg itself is a nice ... read more

Last day in Aachen, I still do not know how I feel about dorm rooms in hostels, but they are what they are. Aachen I found a few new things about, the trainstation here was considered the "last stop of people escaping nazism", which I thought was cool. I also found out that the Gestapo headquaters here was hosted in the theater district, not far from the trainstation. The game today was upsetting, it was a tie but still better than a loss. We went to the "public viewing" but it was sadly full...a hour before the game! We ended up watching the game in a bier garden that was really nice near the Karl der Große Rathaus. I am excited to see Hamburg tomorrow, I have heard a lot a bout the fish market there. ... read more

So today I further explored the city thanks to a suggestion by the workers at the hostel. It is funny, I find today I keep thinking about my father, not just because of the cemetary, but also because at a German restaurant (where the picture of my dinner is from) they played the song "Sherry baby" on the radio. I found out Aachen is the ruling place of Charlemege and seeing his "Rathaus" was really cool, I was dissapointed to find out that you cannot take pictures inside, but the building alone is an archetectural beauty. On these old buildings the fence off statues that are inset and also put small metal spikes up wherever a bird (aka pigeon) could put a nest up. The city has more than I thought to offer, the hostel here ... read more

This was an amazing and informational trip this morning. Not to hard to get to luckily either. The cemetary had all kinds of information and I worked with them at the desk a little bit collecting information about great uncle James Becvar. It was funny because in Belgium, they speak French and German (French in the section I was) so I had to communicate in mostly German, but at the cemetary they had an American working it. He sent me home with some stuff as well. He was even nice enough to tell me that James died in the battle of Huertgen forest, a 3 month campain! He sent me with more information and I was excited to find out you can have them put a wreath out for him whenever you would like. It turns ... read more
