March 29th, 2006, Day 83 of our cruise of 105 At sea after Antalya A local costumed Turkish band was playing loudly outside our stateroom by 8am-the dock was a very vibrant place with 60 busses parked in a line waiting for the passengers of 2 cruise ships going out on tours, then there were cabs, excursion people and ships crew tightening ropes. My favorite part of the day as it is truly alive! We toured with our friends who work very hard at organizing these special tours; turns out that we see three times as much at a third the cost. Turkey is one of our favorite countries (there are many). As we were walking back to the bus after touring ruins, countryside, waterfalls and old and new town, Mary gave me food for thought. ... read more

March 27th, 2006, Day 81 of our cruise of 105 At sea after Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt Day started at 5:30 am The local police band was playing loudly outside our stateroom by 6am- good for us as we had to get up- some were not so pleased. Convoy of many buses left shortly after 7 for the Pyramids- 3 hours away Awesome My favorite visual memories are of the very armed policemen on white camels stationed on the horizon, on the top of gigantic sand dunes almost encircling the site. My second visual is Terry trying to climb down into the pyramid! Home after 7pm, exhausted, we shopped on the dock for a few souvenirs and dined in our room with our favorite room service item on the menu: club sandwich. Asleep by sailaway at ... read more

This is my entry in the Narrative Creative Writing assignment due today I was born…. Claire McManus 438 I WAS BORN AN UNTOUCHABLE I was born a hapless shudras. I can not remember how old I was when I realized the there might be a different way of life, an alternate set of rules; my inexcusable ignorance restricted by a rigidly stagnant existence. I was born a feckless shudras within an orthodoxy which predestined me to a sordid fate. I was born a rebellious shudras. I listened when I should not, I did not pretend to be blind, I could and did smell above me, I touched surreptitiously and relentlessly and did not implode. I could taste the advances of betterment. I was repressed, beaten and degraded. I was made to endure and remained desisted; no ... read more

March 21st, 2006, Day 75 of our cruise of 105 Sea day on the Arabian Sea in the Gulf of Aden Yesterday Salalah, Oman In India, we paid 1$ for a taxi to town- we were docked around the corner. Yesterday, the going rate was 25$ to drive 16 miles to town as the commercial pier is way off. Salalah town is clean and very quiet as everybody has a job; not vibrant like some other countries with higher unemployment. We hired a cab with Mary and Robin, they have traveled extensively and worked abroad, we learn continuously from them and listen to their advice. Robin is our fearless leader, the MAN whom some people listen to exclusively; in some cultures, some men guide won’t speak to me, they don’t even pretend to hear me, I ... read more

March 16th, 2006, Day 70 of our cruise of 105 Second wonderful day in Mumbay (formely Bombay), in West India Busy day We left at 9am with the ships tour Marvels of Mumbay (granny-page 33 in the excursion book) and were blessed with an articulate and knowledgeable guide. We saw everything and were instructed the whole way by Shilpa. She brought us into the Ghandi and the Prince of Wales museums. We also visited the laudry cement cubicles that men rent for 500 ruppees a month(12$) for space and 1(yes only one tub-and lots of bleach and pink powder) tub of water a day; for a small fee they wash by beating, dry, iron and fold clothes in there and return them the next day. At the almost end of our trip, we left the tour ... read more

March 15h, 2006, Day 69 of our cruise of 105 Mumbay (formely Bombay), in West India Busy day We were out from 8 am till 5:30pm 10 of us rented a small bus and drove 86km north of Mumbai to Lunavala a Hill Station of the British( they went there to escape the heat of the city). We climbed a mountain by tuk-tuk and then the rest by foot to reach Buddhist caves carved in the mountains, 600AD. On our way back we walked through the Hanging Gardens and toured the seedier parts of the city. We also visited a Jain temple. We stopped at the Gateway to India ( where the British arrived and departed) across the street from the grand Taj Mahal Hotel. Again, all a very pleasant surprise, India is lovely. March 14th, 2006, Day 68 of our cruise of 105 At sea between Cochin and Mumbay(formely Bombay), in South West India Busy day We awoke in time to walk our 2 miles and clear Indian customs (yes again), then trivia. The first picture is of Terry dictating his blog in our map room. Can you find me on the picture?! After trivia, we joined our friends Leon & Ella and Mary & Robin and hosted a lunch with US Ambassador Ed Peck and his lovely wife Ann. As you might know, Terry picked this world cruise on the basis of the itinerary. Having been to Alaska with Holland America, my reason for choosing this cruise line among many others is the exceptional quality of the speakers who participate in the Exploration Speaker series and the ambassador ... read more
