Well, since we didn’t get to bed until after 2:30 this morning, you can bet that we did not rouse right out of bed for a full day in Sydney. And of course the sun was actually shining a little, between the clouds. Around 11 or so we were finally up and ready to have lunch. The sun was starting to come out, the umbrellas were away and our stomachs were growling. The Rocks has great little sidewalk cafes and shops. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and then walked along George St. and took in all the high end shops. Kirsten has been trying to find a place to get her haircut, but she knew the salon located between the Burberry Shop and Louis Vitton was going to be too expensive. We have been ... read more

It’s another beautiful day in Sydney. The umbrellas are out, the rain is coming down in buckets, and mini raging rivers are flooding the streets. Awesome! We slept in a little then ventured out to check out our new neighborhood, the Rocks. The Rocks is a part of Sydney that is infamous for being the prison site in New South Wales where all the prisoners were sent by the British. The British sent the convicts down here and appointed a British governor to rule over the state. Anyway, The Rocks is now a very cool shopping district and is a stone’s throw away from the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Opera House, the botanical Gardens and many other sites. We have a great view from the roof of our hotel many of these sites. On the weekends ... read more

So we had an early start this morning in Melbourne to catch our flight to Sydney. It was cold as usual. The shuttle was late and took forever to get everyone and make it to the airport. For once Jetstar was efficient and had people working and since we were late we got to jump the line. The flight left on time but was packed. We arrived Sydney to pouring cold rain. For the record, it has rained/snowed EVERY day of our trip with on exception, the day we were stranded in the Auckland airport. We fought our way onto a shuttle and 90 min later we arrived at our hotel. It is a 13KM drive. Apparently people in Sydney can't drive in the rain and it was a parking lot. We found out it has ... read more

When the alarm went this morning, the first words out of Chester’s mouth were that we were headed to a pharmacy to get Kirsten cough medicine. We were not sure what we were doing today, we just knew that it was called the Savannah Walkabout. Our guide Paul picked us up at 9 am and we headed out of Melbourne to two reserves that promised koalas, birds and kangaroos. This was a true walkabout and really awesome. The tour company was Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours and they were totally professional and enjoyable. Paul was very knowledgeable and personable. He knew every kind of bird and could pick them out at the drop of a hat. We reached our first reserve to find Mary who also works for the company. She has gone out and early to ... read more

It was another early day, and another early flight on Jet Star. Of course we are nervous about our flight, since it is on the world’s worse airline, but we get to the airport and fly out to Melbourne without problems. We make it to our hotel in Melbourne before noon and thankfully our room is ready. We rest for a little bit, have lunch and head out to the Penguin Parade. The two hour drive to Phillip Island goes quickly except for the annoying woman who sat behind us and who demanded to have the van stop so she could use the restroom. Never mind there are 30 others on the van. Plus she complained the entire time about the coach. The reserve on Phillip Island was pretty cool and we would love to show ... read more

We had an early call in the morning since most of the day we would be on the bus headed to Adelaide. We were packed and ready to go, and were on the bus early so we could get our double seats back. We drove for about an hour to a spot where we were suppose to go on an hour hike Mount Zero, but since it was raining, it was too dangerous to hike. The hike was to be a little strenuous and had some rocks we would have to scramble over. The damn German girl asked if there was another hike we could do instead. There was, but it was to nothing and all we did was get wet in the rain. Kirsten, miserable with her cold and sore throat getting worse elected to ... read more

The second day of our bus tour we hoped would bring us more animals, and it did. Now since we were not staying in the hostel, we were not first on the bus, so Chester lost her comfy 2-seater and was stuck in a single seat. We think most people are a little intimated by Kirsten and her seat was safe and waiting for her. This day was also a lot of stop and go. We went back to the 12 Apostles to the other side of the park and explored the beaches and caves that have been created by the waves. There were many more limestone formations in the water and the views were quite breathtaking. We visited the site called London Bridge. Again we saw more huge limestone formations that stretched out into the ... read more

Our driver is a perky young Australia woman named Kate. She is very energetic and sympathizes with our travel woes. She quickly tells us to get on the bus and pass out. This was the first stop to pick up passengers, so you guessed it, we each picked a double seat and promptly spread out our belongings to claim a big seat and not have to sit next to anyone, including each other. Again, remember we are quite ripe by this point. The bus holds 24 people plus the driver. It had double seats on one side of the isle and single seats on the other. We gathered up the rest of the travelers and luckily only 13 were on the trek so no one has to share seats and a few are open for people ... read more

So day 9 was not filled with any plans except to fly from Queenstown to Auckland to Melbourne, Australia. Not a big deal, or so we thought. We slept in and had a nice full breakfast buffet at the hotel. After our late check-out we returned our rental car at the airport and headed to check-in. We were flying Jetstar which is a low cost carrier in New Zealand and Australia, but low cost is relative. Our first clue should have been the 40-50 people waiting to check-in and the whopping 2 employees checking them in. Good thing we were there early as it took us 45 minutes to check in. In the states you get 50 pounds for luggage, not so here, plus you have to pay/kilo. So for 70 pounds we paid an extra ... read more

It was an early morning for our last full day in New Zealand. Today was a day of cabs, busses and boats. A cab picked us up at 7 am and took us to our bus. We were two of the last people on the completely full bus. By 7:30 we headed out of Queenstown and started the 2 ½ hour ride to get us close to Doubtful Sound. The ride was amazing. We had awesome views of lakes on one side of the bus and the mountains on the other side. It is hard to describe how picturesque the scenes are, they don’t even seem real. This was just the first leg of several getting to the Sound. After the bus, we loaded onto a boat that took us across Lake Manapouri, which took about ... read more
