Our first morning in Cambodia is one that has been much anticipated. We have our morning routine down pretty good. We get up about 90 minutes before we have to meet our guide. This morning was a 6:30 wake up. The three of us can shower and get ready within an hour; that leaves 30 minutes for breakfast. The hotel is really nice and not what we expected. As well as the breakfasts at every hotel have been great. Eight am rolls around and our guide, Nok, picks us up for our day of bike riding to the Angkor temples. We drove a short distance to get our park passes and then hopped on the bikes. It was great to be active today and not riding around in a "nap trap". The first temple was a ... read more

The morning started off early with a boat ride to the floating markets on the Mekong River. These are not the tourist markets of Thailand, but the real ones the farmers, middlemen and traders use. It took about 30 min to get there from our hotel, but once we arrived there was a plethora local men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes trading and selling their produce, meat and fish. The small row boats were the farmers bringing their goods to market to see to the middle men, in larger boats. The middle boats would put their product on a pole in the air to sell to the traders. So there were poles with sweet potatoes, gourds, roots, and other fruits and vegetables. There was even one boat full of butchered meat with NO ... read more

Our third day started off with a 6:15 wake up call. Lynn was first up in the shower and Chester was up needing to pack up her suitcase. Kirsten needed to pack up her suitcase too, of wait, she doesn't have her luggage yet. Kirsten usually has no trouble sleeping but again this morning she woke up at 3. She did check her email again to see if there was anything from the airline, but NADA. But after a phone call to United she did find out her luggage was on the way. But likely a few more days before she would see it. So she pilfered through Chester's suitcase for something to wear. After breakfast and checking out of our hotel, we were in the van for another excursion. We drove for about 2 hours ... read more

So we spoke to soon is saying our travels to Vietnam were uneventful. We boarded in Korea to head to Saigon and got a good laugh watching the shit show of people boarding trying to get their luggage on and use a combination of letters and numbers. We arrived Saigon and waited for our visas with only one guy working them. Kirsten commented that it at least when they got their visas their luggage would be there. Heading down the elevators, Lynn and Chester see their luggage on the carousal. Kirsten did not see hers and after a few minutes getting run over by luggage trolleys, Kirsten told Chester she did not have a good feeling about her luggage. And she was right. It never arrived. So she made a claim with a 3rd party who ... read more

Our journey begins in 2 different states, Nebraska via Texas and Colorado. This year Chester and Kirsten are trying to throw off the doubters and are bringing along a 3rd traveler. Because 2 single, overweight, over 40 women traveling together are gay. 3 single, overweight, muffin topped, over 40 women equals, 3 spinsters looking for a good time. The odyssey will take us through 3 countries in less than 3 weeks. Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. Our goal is to compare the various massage techniques in all of them on a daily basis if possible. And maybe see a few sights along the way. Today's journey getting to Vietnam is so far uneventful aside from the guy on the plane eating Kim-chi flavored pork rinds. But the journey is not over so time will tell as ... read more

Well today started with a rude wake-up. Kirsten went to turn off her alarm and glanced at her e-mail. There were 3 notices saying our United flight to Chicago was CANCELLED!!! Yes lovely. She quickly got on the phone to United who told her we were all rebooked for the next day. Obviously this was not acceptable. 45 min later we were rebooked on US Air with connections in Philadelphia and Phoenix. Not the quickest route home but still get home today. We arrived at the airport with no problems (a first for our driving). As suspected when we got there the line to United customer services was HUGE (hundreds) with 1 person helping them. Most would miss any option for another flight as they would still be in line. Thank goodness we could go to ... read more

Today was our last full day in Ireland. We spent it driving around a lot, again. Kirsten is doing a great job driving on these “death roads” as we like to call the street from our lodging to the main road. One wouldn’t think 2 cars could pass each other on these winding S curves in the roads that have about a 10 foot flush green hedges and walls on both sides of the road. Today’s journey took us west and a little north. We were headed to the Cliffs of Moher. We drove straight across from our Irish home to Ennis and then we headed north along the coast to the cliffs. We actually did well with directions to the cliffs. The numbers, not names, of the roads are very confusing, and there were a ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway June 16th 2013

We had another early start for sight-seeing today. We went to see some Abbeys, Castles and the city of Galeway. The main issue is getting anywhere. Judy tells Kirsten what she wants to see and then Kirsten has to try and figure out how to get there and if we have the time to fit everything in. It gets interesting. First stop was Quinn Abbey, a century or two old Abbey with a cemetery inside and outside the Abbey. We toured the grounds and it had very scenic surroundings. Judy was climbing all over and into it. There was no one there to tell you couldn’t so she did. Including hopping a fence. After the Abby we were on our way to Galway. While driving we saw a castle or abbey and decide to stop and ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Bunratty June 15th 2013

Our first full day in Ireland started with a bang, a cold one. Judy was the only one who got a warm shower, Chester got the second shower and it went cold about 4 minutes in. Gene and Kirsten had nothing and did not like it. This was not good start for the driver of the trip. We got over the cold showers and headed for the day’s activities. Kirsten did a great job yesterday driving from the airport to our lodging and this is quite a feat since the roads are crazy narrow and sometimes they are not even wide enough for two cars to pass each other. It gets a little scary coming around blind turns. Gene rode shot gun and as everyone knows, if you are shot gun, you are the navigator and ... read more
