Today was a travel day of sorts. We were up and ready and breakfast ate by 8:30. Toure picked us up and we were headed out of Croatia and on to Slovenia. Our guide couldn't believe that we had forgotten the most famous Slovenian who resided in America? . . . wait for it . . . Melania Trump. Duh! Anyway, she is from a beautiful country and we did drive by her home town. We drove two hours to the capital for our tour. It is a small town of about 200,000 people. We walked along the river and through the different open squares of markets and kiosks. There are a lot of churches here too, and they are all beautiful. We hopped on another cable car up to a castle and walked around the ... read more

So Dan left us this morning. His alarm went off at 5 am, and he was out the door by 5:15. We woke up and said our goodbyes and then went back to sleep. Toure picked us up 10 to start our day's tour of the city. Since the day before was a lot of walking, we started later in the morning and drove around the rest of the city. We started with a drive to the upper town. It was the wealthy area of the new town. We drove around all the homes of the ambassadors to Croatia. The homes were incredible and one definitely wants a job as an ambassador to Croatia! There were many neighborhoods that had beautiful architecture and it was quite hilly. Our first stop was at the town cemetery. It ... read more

Dan's final day! We had an early morning wake up call so we could beat the huge tourist groups to the lakes. Toure said that by the afternoon, as many as 15 buses with tons of tourists will be unloading and starting their trek through the park. We had showered, ate and were ready to go at 9 am. It was a short drive to the park from our hotel. We were excited to start the hike to the waterfalls. It was another warm and sunny day and we were ready to be active. The park is massive and beautiful. We hiked down to the first lake and took a ferry across to the upper part of the lakes. We started on the paths and hit several waterfalls right away. We were blown away by the ... read more

Last day waking up on the boat. Kirsten of course got up and hit the shower. When she returned we were hoping to have a nice breakfast prepared for us today, but this island had no real breakfast spots, just coffee shops. However, they served our favorite breakfast: chocolate croissants. So Dan got his coffee and Chester and Kirsten added on a few more pounds. We made our way back to the boat and Kirsten was summoned by last night's waiter to where we had our drinks a few hours before. The waiter asked her if she had had drinks here last night, and she said yes. He responded, "We have a very big problem." Kirsten is thinking WTF, we paid our bill. Then the waiter held up a credit card. Actually it was her debit ... read more

Another beautiful morning in paradise. Everyone slept great since Bartul fixed the doors from banging on the sides as the boat rocked gently in the bay. We decided to fix breakfast on the boat, and by "we", Kirsten made breakfast. We had scrambled eggs, cheese, fruit, and bread and of course our new breakfast staple: chocolate crossaints. They are amazing. Kirsten showered again this morning, while Chester and Dan were fine with the Adriatic shower they were going to take later in the day when they all went swimming. The ports all have had great facilities. The bathrooms and showers are all very clean and stocked. The great thing about them is that the women's restroom rarely has a line, while the men's is always busy. We were finally off to our last island, Solta. Bartul ... read more

After a fitful night of not sleeping because of a banging door, we got up and readied ourselves for a second day on the beautiful Adriatic. Who cares if you can’t sleep when all one has to do is hang out on a boat. Kirsten made breakfast, as she does on every vacation, and we ate like kings. Scrambled eggs, fruit, chocolate croissants, bread and cheese. It was awesome. The facilities at the port were quite nice, so we were able to use the restrooms and Kirsten even took a shower. Chester and Dan are just fine the way they are. We finally paid up at the port and were off for a day of sailing to our next island. At least, when you rent a sail boat one thinks they will be sailing, but we ... read more

Sorry for the delay in our blog, but we have been off the grid. We are currently on our last night of island hopping. We are hanging at a marina bar on some island in Croatia writing our blog. We left our hotel in Split to board our vessel for the next 4 days. We met our captain, Bartul, at the port. He is all of 23 years old but looks 16, but he has “lots” of experience. He showed us around the boat and then we were off. No safety briefing of course. We think there are life jackets but not sure. We got settled in and picked our cabins ignoring the captain’s hints that 2 could fit in one cabin. We paid and he’s young, so he is on the couch. Get over it. ... read more

We were up and at 'em by 9 am for breakfast. It was a typical continental breakfast from the hotel: breads, cheeses, meats, eggs, yogurt, fruit and juices. Damian was right on time at 9:30 to take us to our Split tour guide. This is where we said good-bye to Damian. Our new guide was great, but not one of us can think of her name; therefore, she will forever be known as Kaitlyn (after Kaitlyn Jenner). I think you know where we are going with this. Our guide was wonderful, funny, and knowledgeable. She walked us through the ruins of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Split was his retirement home that was built from 305 BC to 295 BC. It was another hot day, but we were there early and weaving through the small streets of ... read more

Another beautiful day in Croatia. We were up and ready by 8:30 today. Our wonderful hosts were so kind and they helped us with our luggage to our pick-up point. Normally we would be fine taking care of it ourselves, but have you seen the number of steps to our place? They were so generous and their help was much appreciated. Especially because it was already so hot and Kirsten and Chester definitely over-packed. Damien met us at our pick-up spot just outside the walls of Old Dubrovnik. It was an amazing place to spend two nights right in the middle of the city walls. We were told it was a two-hour drive to Mostar, Bosnia. Chester slept most of the way and missed out on several conversations. For once, Kirsten was wide awake in the ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik May 28th 2018

Day 3 - We started our day arriving to our apartment at 1:30AM due to a delayed flight. But walking inside the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik with no one there was really cool. Luckily we didn't have to meet our guide Damien until 10 AM. He showed us around the city starting with a cable car ride to the top of a mountain with amazing views. Old Town Dubrovnik is a walled city built in the 1300s (we think), and it is built like a fortress. We are staying inside the walled city, which is awesome until one realizes how many stairs are involved. Everywhere you go, there are stairs. Kirsten was immediately trying to figure out how residents got their furniture into their homes. We climbed almost 80 flights of stairs today and walked ... read more
