Monday, February 23rd, 2009 Last night after dinner we finally got the opportunity to get some bank statements and do our last months budget. Wow! We had realized that prices here soared since the publishing of the guidebook, but we hadn't realized just what an impact it had made on our budget! Ouch! The weak Rand and some optimistic initial budgeting on our side also didn't help much. Unless we find some place to volunteer we'll probably only stay another month in South-East Asia before moving on to New Zealand. We packed for the coming trek, checked out of the hotel and went to wander the streets of Hanoi. We saw the Memorial House. It's a beautifully restored traditional Chinese-style merchant home. After that we went to see the Bach Ma Temple, the oldest temple in ... read more

Saturday, February 21st, 2009 We went to get Ferdi's wooly face shaved this morning. The hairdresser didn't fully understand and seemed very unsure as to what we'd like. We think the fact that the beard had to be cut with the clipper confused them. Eventually they understood that they should use the clipper, but they didn't understand about the length. We just went with it and they cut Ferdi's wool very short leaving him with a nice mustache. That just looked terrible and it took some more waving of the arms to get them to take that off. Phew! Now he looks like a 12 year old! At least it will only last a week. Then the wool will return. There were some cool 2nd hand bookshops around. We could exchange our books (2 of ours ... read more

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 After we got our Vietnamese visas we headed to the bus station to catch a bus to the "Buddha Park". An eccentric guy had combined various eastern religions and built a ton of statues from all of their gods. We weren't too excited about it, but is was something to do. At the bus station we found the right bus but it was packed, and the tuk-tuk drivers kept hassling us. Soon Ferdi had had enough and we decided the "Buddha Park" just wasn't worth the effort. We got a baguette and some fresh fruit from the market and headed to a nearby park for a snack. As we were riding around we saw a computer shop and decided to take our laptop in so they could have a look at it. ... read more

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 One of the many things we've learnt on this trip was never to assume anything or have expectations of how something will be or look. One runs the risk of serious disappointment because the assumptions or expectations will always be wrong. It's part of trusting God and learning to take life as it comes. We left Vang Vieng on a "VIP" bus for Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. In typical Lao fashion everything was late and filled to maximum capacity! Also, "VIP" means no aircon, very cramped, and extremely dodgy! During the four hour trip we had to stop a few times so the driver or his assistant could do something to the engine. We just wanted to get there! The drive was rough. To slow the bus our driver would ... read more

Sunday, February 15th, 2009 We slept okay and woke early to see if Vlooi had survived the night. He only squeaked twice during the night and we expected to be up to feed him every hour. We were very relieved when we saw that he was fine and fast asleep. We put him in bed with us and later took turns to lie with him while the other got ready for the day, because the moment we left him alone he would cry terribly. He's rather strong for such a little guy and always on the hunt for food. But if you lay with him for a while he would curl up by your neck and fall asleep. So cute! We were very stressed because we didn't know what to do with him. We just prayed ... read more

Friday, February 13th, 2009 In the morning we booked tickets on a mini-van to Vang Vieng for the following day. We walked around town and saw a few sights. We also walked across a bamboo footbridge (where we had to pay a toll) en-route to a nearby village. We got bored before we got there so we headed back into town. After lunch we headed to the Tat Kuang Si waterfalls and Bear Rescue Center 32km south of town. All the bears at this sanctuary have been rescued from poachers. In Asia the bears are caught and placed in tiny cages (barely big enough to for the bear to be in) and the bile from their gallbladders are painfully extracted and used in Chinese medicines. See www.freethebears.org.au and www.bearlao.com We bought some t-shirts to support these ... read more

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 We woke up very early with the crowing of the rooster just outside our room. The walls in the guesthouse were paper thin, so if someone in the next room moved it sounded like they were inside our own room. The village was rather busy during the night. Luckily the generators cut out at 10pm so the karaoke bar next door went quiet early! There were still some locals living it up, but once we were asleep, nothing could wake us. I (Ferdi) was a little disappointed that Talita wasn’t entirely cured when we woke up, but then God said to me that He did answer my prayer. Talita had slept really well and felt much better! We had a quick bite to eat and headed for the boat. We got there ... read more

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 We got up at 6:30 so we could be ready for our pickup to cross into Laos. Talita was feeling worse. The air-con in the minibus really didn't do her any good. After breakfast and getting some expensive kip (the Laos currency) we headed across the Mekong river on a ferry into Laos. After such a chill time in Thailand, nothing could prepare us for the chaos of the immigration process and we were herded like sheep from point to point (onto ferry, onto the taxi/truck, into places and into restaurants to wait for paperwork, passports and boat tickets). We can't wait to get off this package and back to out freedom! After hours of this we finally made it onto the “slow-boat”. We sat forever waiting while more and more people ... read more

Monday, February 9th, 2009 Remember that "Tourist Information" lady that turned out to actually be a travel agent? Well, we had booked an 11 day package with her that included train tickets, transfers, hotel in Chiang Mai, the jungle trek, minibus to Chiang Khong + hotel and a two day trip on a slow boat down the Mekong River in Laos to Luang Prabang. It was so cheap! From Luang Prabang we're on our own again and that suits us just fine! We left Chiang Mai on a minibus in the morning for Chiang Khong on the north-east border of Laos (a country to the east of Thailand and is pronounced "Lao"). Tony and Siubhan (the Irish couple) was on the same bus so we had some friendly faces along for the ride. It was a ... read more

Saturday, February 7th, 2009 We had a spectacular rest on our big soft bed! When we went out for brunch we discovered that the Flower Festival was still going on. Some of the main roads were closed and big floats decorated with flowers rolled down the street, accompanied by marching bands. It was pretty cool. We found a little vegetarian restaurant and had massive veggie burgers. That night we decided to head to the Night Bazaar, Chiang Mai's biggest tourist attraction. On the way we spotted a mall and decided to see if we could find DV tapes for our video camera. The place turned out to be 4 floors of PC and camera shops. We ended up buying an awesome tiny Acer laptop! It's gorgeous and now we have a place to store our pictures, ... read more
