Friday, March 6th We woke to a cool, overcast morning. It was a lovely respite from the crazy heat of the last few days. As we left the hotel for breakfast Ferdi's watch fell from his arm, one link pin rusted completely through. It must be the permanent sweat of the last month. After breakfast we booked bus tickets leaving for Hoi An the next day, then went strolling around town looking for a place to have Ferdi's watch fixed and also for a tube of some kind to put our paintings in. We easily found someone to fix the watch once we got to "watch street". The streets here seem to have a theme eg. Watch street, t-shirt street, bag street etc. The only exceptions are mobile phone, camera and scooter repair shops. These are ... read more

Thursday, March 5th We rented bicycles and headed to the nearest branch of the bank whose ATM didn't give us our cash in Hanoi. After some difficulty we figured out that they need a certified bank statement showing that the money really was deducted. Luckily we've got boeda Konnie on the ground in SA who's gonna help us on that end. After the bank we got little headphones so that we can Skype our people. Our laptop has got a built-in Webcam and mic so we can video chat! Cool! We can't wait! We then went to the silk shop and Talita fitted her new outfit. It looks GORGEOUS and fitted perfectly! Talita insisted that Ferdi get a silk tie that fits with her outfit and we got a beautiful set with a tie, handkerchief and ... read more

Tuesday, March 3rd So today was the day we would see if we'd get our passports back. We had to wait till the afternoon cause we joined a guided group tour for the day to visit some of the many tombs, temples and mausoleums scattered throughout Hué. We got on a "Dragon boat" and cruised down the Song Huong (Perfume) river to the Garden House, then to the Thien Mu Pagoda where we saw, amongst other things, the car that Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk, took to the intersection of Phan dinh Phung street and Le van Duyet on June 11th 1963 in Saigon. As soon as he got out of the car he sat down in the lotus position and burned himself to death in protest against the Ngo dinh Diem regime's policies of ... read more

Tuesday, March 3rd We arrived in Hué at about 8am. A young man showed us to a reasonably priced hotel but when we tried to check in... guess what? We had left our passports in Hanoi! Argh!!!! Unlike the other countries we've been to, Vietnam requires that you leave your passport at reception when checking in at any guest house or hotel. They are supposed to give it back to you when you check out, but our previous hotel didn't and we forgot to ask! You know that cold feeling you get when you realize that you've done something reeeeaaaaly stupid that could have major implications? Well, I tell ya, there was a lot of that going through us! Luckily we had copies of our passports so we could at least check in while the ... read more

Sunday, March 1st We left Cat Ba island and a smaller boat took us an hour to our big boat. The bay was quite rough at times and we had to keep looking at the horizon to stop us getting sea-sick. On board the big boat we headed back to Halong Bay harbour. We played a game of chess and Talita won, just when we thought it would be a draw. After lunch at a beautiful spot overlooking the bay we headed back to the craziness of Hanoi. Long told us that 25 years ago there were 10 million people in Vietnam. Now it's about 85 million! No wonder the streets of Hanoi is so crazy! In the last month we've noticed that the west's obsession with non-smoking laws are slow to catch in the ... read more

Saturday, Feb 28th Talita woke with a bit of a sore throat. After breakfast we checked out of our cabin, said goodbye to our fellow passengers (they were going back to Hanoi) and got on a smaller boat to Cat Ba island an hour away. Cat Ba island is the biggest and only inhabited island in Halong bay. We hiked about 3km to a local village where we had lunch. We returned to the boat to go to another part of Cat Ba island for kayaking and then on to Cat Ba town where we would spend the night. However, our boat wouldn't start and we had to wait an hour for another boat to bring us a new battery. Off we went again! Half an hour later we arrived in an area where we kayaked ... read more

Friday, Feb 27th We arrived in Hanoi at 5am and hugely overpaid for a taxi into the old quarter. Nothing was open yet so we sat by the lake observing the strange dance of the early-bird exercise community. Some shuffled backwards, some hit their backs and heads, some swing their arms, lift their legs and kick, some walk and others jog. If you thought yoga looked funny you should see these people. They even set up a "weight room" next to the road. There were hundreds of them. It's free and much more entertaining than our snotty Virgin Active! At breakfast we realized that 200,000 dong was missing from our wallet. We tried to figure out where it went and the only thing we could figure was that when Ferdi tipped the lady after dinner last ... read more

Thursday, Feb 26th After breakfast we walked up Ham Rong Mountain. It's more of a hill really, with beautiful gardens, nice rock formations and a great view over the town. It was a great way to spend the morning. At lunch they served vegetable soup with pieces of pork floating in it. This seems to be their idea of vegeterianism. When asked for real vegetable soup they merely took the pork out and brought it back. Needless to say, Talita didn't have the soup! After lunch we walked about 3km downhill to the Cat Cat village and waterfalls. It was a serious downhill with not much of a waterfall at the end and then a serious uphill back to town. Half way up we stopped to rest and enjoy the gorgeous view. Our transfer to the ... read more

Wednesday, Feb 25th We woke up to a feast of pancakes with banana and honey after which we said goodbye to the Hoanz family. We hiked to the Red Xao village where we visited the primary school and then on to our lunch spot. Hai cooked us noodle soup and then the mini-van picked us up and we headed back to the hotel. We said goodbye to Hai and had a nice bath. Later we walked around in town for a short while but then we found a bottle of great French red wine. We went back to the hotel and sat enjoying the lovely sunset view and sipping our wine. Today's highlights: 1. Banana & Honey pancake breakfast. 2. Soaking in a bath. 3. Enjoying a bottle of 11 year old French red wine.... read more

Tuesday, February 24th We arrived at Lao Cai station (38km from Sapa and 3km from the Chinese border) at 5:15am. We had to sit in the mini-van for an hour and a half until enough people arrived to fill it. When the van was finally full we drove an hour and a half into the mountains to Sapa, where we had time for a great breakfast and a hot shower. We met our guide named Hai. Even before we stated the trek we could see the "vultures" waiting outside the doors of the hotel lobby. These "vultures" were a group of older ladies in traditional clothing selling woven fabrics and souvenirs. The moment we set foot outside they wanted to know where we were from, what our names was and how old we were. They then ... read more
