Saturday, April 11th To be honest, Koh Samui isn't what we thought it would be. There's none of the things you'd think of when dreaming about a tropical island getaway. No "white sandy beaches", no "clear blue water", no "cheap bungalows". Also, the fact that diving is so expensive here really took the wind out of our sails and we had to fight real hard to stay up-beat. Disappointment can be a hard pill to swallow. But wait... We seem to have missed the point here. We didn't come on this trip only to dive and have a good time. We came to have experiences, both good and bad. We travel for the love of traveling. We travel for the love of adventure. We travel to see new places. We travel to learn about God and ... read more

Thursday, April 9th This morning we had to go to the train station to see about tickets to Surat Thani, a town on the west coast of Thailand. From there you can take a boat to the islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pangan and Ko Tao. It's about 11 hours by train so we wanted to depart the following evening. We grabbed a taxi and headed to the nearest subway station (they call it the Metro, like the French). Here we took our first subway ride of the trip. The line terminates at the train station so a short walk took us to the booking desks. A friendly official checked for availability but there was no tickets available for the following evening or the evening after that. The only space in the near future was this ... read more

Tuesday, April 7th We took our last run on Mui Ne's beach this morning, the anticipation and excitement of adventures to come buzzing in our veins. We packed the last of our stuff and at 8:45 left Mui Ne. It was a long 5 hour ride and on the bus TV they showed cock-fighting accompanied by serious rave music. Weird. We arrived in a rainy Ho Chi Minh City (everybody here still calls it Saigon) at about 14:00. It was raining good and proper by the time we got off the bus. Luckily for us the bus stopped just across from the road we wanted to be in. As we exited the bus a friendly fellow asked if we needed a cheap guest house. We said “yes” and he led us down a small alley. After ... read more

Monday, April 6th Our jeep picked us up just after 7am. Our first stop was at Mui Ne’s fishing docks. There are tons of fishing boats at anchor here (see panoramic photo above). It makes for a beautiful picture. The Red sand-dunes are 3km from Mui Ne, but we first went to the White sand dunes 25km away. En-route we were very glad that we had gotten the jeep. On a scooter we would never have found our way. Also the last part of the road is dirt covered with sand. We might very well have ditched the bike if we’d tried to navigate it. We really enjoyed the jeep ride too. It was great to be moving again, wind in our hair, sun on our skins. At the foot of the White sand-dunes lies the ... read more

Friday, April 3rd We had a really long jog on the beach this morning. We pushed it a little. After breakfast we took a nap. For some reason we were exhausted. Maybe it was the long run? We packed up, checked out and moved to a really nice mini-resort. For the first time since coming to Mui Ne we felt at home. We unpacked, ordered a beer-shandy and sat reading in the cool breeze on our porch with the sound of the waves crashing in the background. Ahhh... Sweet bliss! Before lunch Talita finished her big red book. It was her biggest one yet and a big accomplishment. Lunch was followed by a spot of sun-bathing after which we read and napped the afternoon away. Dinner was at Jibes where we enjoyed Mojito's followed by beer ... read more

We'd like to apologise, especially to Megan ;-), for the April fools joke. We are glad we got so many of you! Wednesday, April 1st This morning we left Nha Trang for Mui Ne on a smallish bus. It had a TV and we could watch a movie. The only problem was that they dubbed it to Vietnamese, but not the way you'd think. Instead of having different voices for each character, they had one female voice for every actor - male, female, young, old. There's no voice acting. The woman merely read the subtitles. It's horrible! We arrived in Mui Ne just before 2pm (it took more than 5 hours by bus, not 3 hours as we were led to believe) and set off to a place we read about in our guide book that ... read more

Tuesday, March 31st The morning dawned rainy so we postponed our jog and slept a little late. The route to our favorite breakfast spot took us past the dive shop and Simon called us in. He wanted to know how long we were planning to stay. We told him that we were leaving the following day for Mui Ne, then flying to Bangkok on the 8th. He said that Tu told him we were interested in doing the Rescue Diver Course but that it was too expensive for us. He said he had a suggestion for us... He offered both of us internships! Free accommodation and all the training we'd need to become qualified PADI dive instructors. After we're qualified we'd each get US$300 per month plus commission on each student we get through the course. ... read more

Sunday, March 29th We decided to take the day off :-) and just stay in, blog, plan and arrange our next move and watch some movies. We ended up not doing any planning, just chilling. We watched movies late into the night. It was great! Mentally we're ready to get going again. In a sense, coming to Nha Trang was like coming home and we've stayed here a long time. Even so, we're both feeling the itch to hit the road again. The next adventure awaits! Today's highlights: 1. Spending the day watching movies. Monday, March 30th After a weak attempt at waking Talita at 6am to go jogging, Ferdi gave up and we ended up sleeping really late. After breakfast we booked our flight to Bangkok. There are no buses that go directly from Saigon ... read more

Friday, March 27th We had to drag ourselves out of bed to go for our morning run. It took us a while but we eventually managed to get out of bed. We ran further than ever before then had a swim. After breakfast we popped into the dive shop to find out what Simon likes cause today's his birthday. Tu said he likes rice cereal so we went to the A-mart to get him some Rice Crispies. We thought about taking the Rescue Diver course, but when we found out what it cost we decided against it. It's too expensive (but still cheaper than your basic scuba course in SA). We had plans to go to the beach but when we got back to the room we took a nap instead, then had some crackers and ... read more

Wednesday, March 25th On the way to the dock this morning we discovered that our instructor, Tri, is a legend in the Vietnam diving community. He has logged more than 10,000 dives, has a reef named after him (Tri Minh's Treat) and is even mentioned in the Lonely Planet guidebook. We're getting taught by the best Vietnam has to offer. It's amazing how humble he is. We've seen so many divers come swaggering onto the boat thinking and behaving like they know everything because they have logged a hundred dives :-). It just goes to show that you never know who's sitting next to you (or who you're bragging to for that matter). The first dive was at Octopus Rock and we went down to 25.9m, our personal best. We swam through a few tunnels formed ... read more
