Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 We woke up very early with the crowing of the rooster just outside our room. The walls in the guesthouse were paper thin, so if someone in the next room moved it sounded like they were inside our own room. The village was rather busy during the night. Luckily the generators cut out at 10pm so the karaoke bar next door went quiet early! There were still some locals living it up, but once we were asleep, nothing could wake us.
I (Ferdi) was a little disappointed that Talita wasn’t entirely cured when we woke up, but then God said to me that He did answer my prayer. Talita had slept really well and felt much better!
We had a quick bite to eat and headed for the boat. We got there early but all the good seats were already taken.
We expected another six hour cruise, but it turned out to be more like nine hours! There’s nothing romantic about that damn “slow boat”!
We arrived in Luang Prabang at about 6pm and headed into town on foot looking for a guest house. The Irish couple, Tony and Siubhan, joined us on our quest to
find a guest house and it took us a couple of tries to realize that it’s much more expensive to travel in this town. Also very touristy! We got a really nice room with a massive king size bed on the main street. Very quiet.
After a refreshing shower we headed to a free wi-fi spot to enjoy some local cuisine and blog a bit.
Today’s highlights:
1. Had a good night’s rest
2. Getting off the “slow-boat”
3. Found nice restaurant with free wi-fi
Thursday, February 12th, 2009 When we woke up this morning Talita's flu was entirely gone! It's amazing how God rewards obedience and faithfulness!
We went walking round town hunting for a less expensive guesthouse. We found none with any vacancies so we decided to stay put for the time being. We got to see a realy nice part of the town though. For the first time since leaving Thailand we're feeling human again, but Laos has yet to start growing on us.
We stopped for some lovely papaya slushies at a little riverside cafe and talked about how strange it is that we are so comfortable amongst the locals and
so uncomfortable with western people. Is it a competition thing? Maybe it's just that we are uncomfortable with the fact that most just talk about themselves and their trip and they're not really interested in anyone else. Like Donald Miller says, everybody wants to be somebody, so I guess we're all in the same boat.
We took a nice long afternoon nap, then went hunting for some din-dins. Found a gorgeous bistro situated in a building built in 1856. We had some cheesy pizzas, then called it a day.
Today's highlights:
1. Talita's disappearing flu
2. Papaya slushies
3. Nice afternoon nap
4. Cheesy pizza
