Greetings from Melbourne, well really from Kings Cross in Sydney as it's a week later but you ken what I mean. We arrived in Melbourne to drop auld Bertha off at the car hire place and after driving around the airport for ages we finally found the shop. I'll not go into details here (as it makes me dry retch even thinking about it) but needless to say emptying the chemical toilet wasn't the best thing we've done on the trip, actually it may have been the worse if it hadn't been for that night with the cockroaches, but that's another story.... Anyway Melbourne, a great place, well I though so, Fiona wasn't as keen. It reminded me of Glasgow (note/question to self: is there any place in the world that doesn't remind you of somewhere ... read more

We took Bertha on an exciting adventure along the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne, some 1200 KM's South East along some cliff hugging coastline. The scenery was amazing, the 12 apostles, London Bridge, Port Campbell, Mount Gambier, Torquay, Angelsea etc.. One thing we didn't count on was the weather, it was dreech! - Freezing at times, one night, in a place called Port Fairy, it was -3 overnight, and we were hudled in our tank of tin, I almost set fire to myself to keep warm but we just turned on the heating instead. The camper was a lap of luxury and considering it was free was a bargain!! - We got a relocation deal, the camper belonged to a company in Melbourne but someone had rented it one-way to Adelaide, we had 4 ... read more

One of the big draws to Adelaide was that I have family there, on my Dad's side. I think Fiona spoke about meeting Ron and Sue Ireland in the leaving Perth post, Ron is my Dad's cousin, my Gran's maiden name was Ireland. Well Ron and his family (my Gran's brother Peter, his wife Jeanie, and their 5 kids) moved to Adelaide in 1959, the rest of the family still live there (Ron married a lass fae Perth and moved there) although sadly Peter and Jeanie have passed on, and they had another son, James, in Australia, so there's 6 kids, 5 in Adelaide and it was our aim to meet them all. We got in touch with the eldest child, Helen and she put us up for the week, we had an amazing time and ... read more

Well we know where we're goin', but we don't know where we've been, and we know what we're knowin', but we can't say what we've seen. And we're not little children, and we know what we want, and the future is certain, give us time to work it out...... We're on the road to nowhere, come on inside, etc, etc. That's not strictly true, well maybe it was for the Talking Heads but we did really know that we were going to Adelaide and we were positive we've just left Perth. So on to South Australia, we've spent the last 4 months in Western Australia and we've now got a month left to get back to Sydney via Adelaide, The Great Ocean Road, Melbourne and Canberra. Adelaide is a beutiful city, much more so than Perth, ... read more

The distances between places in Western Australia are unbelievable, you can drive for about 8 hours and only see two petrol stations, an emu or two and 333 thousand dead and rotting Kangaroo Carcasses (lovely!). Thus, we have had to stop in a couple of places with no real tourist attractions but just for a nights sleep before the next mammoth journey into the dessert. Most of these places have been all right, and we really quite liked Port Hedland, however Dongara was another story. We had to stop in Dongara on our way to Lancelin and booked in to the YHA there. We arrived late afternoon and were greeted by the friendly owner who told us that we were staying in a 'really nice room' so we were pretty chuffed. It turns out that we ... read more

Shell Beach near Denham is a beach, which in places is five metres deep in shells. Over the years pieces of shell have blown onto the beach and formed a 'shell beach'. It was lovely when we went there as there were no other people, just the two of us and all the shells. I collected some pretty shells while Andrew played photographer setting up nice shots and running up hills to join me in them - very funny to watch. Enjoy. ... read more

Denham was our next stop in the Shark Bay area, ye I did say 'Shark' Bay. I was a little worried and rightly so as we were soon told not to swim in the area as Great Whites regularly visit the shallow waters and may take a fancy to a wee bit human every now and again. Denham is a bigger town than Coral Bay, but very nice never the less. The main attraction of tourists in this area is the friendly Dolphins at close by Monkey Mia. There has been a dolphin feeding programme going on there for years and you can go and watch the dolphins being fed and coming very close to you in the shallow waters. They are really very tame and come right up as though they are having a good ... read more

The world's oldest living thing, this was a quick stop on the way to Shark Bay, or on the way from Shark Bay, I cannae remember, anyway, does it really matter? These 'things' are fossilised micro-organisms, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it Dr Twiseltoes, you said that I'd never learn anything about Chemistry, shit maybe he's right, maybe this is bioligy? I've digressed again but the pain never leaves you, the pain of Dr Twiseltoes, my 2nd year Chemistry teacher that is. Let me explain. We were in class, as required, and me and Mogga were at the front of the class dicking about as usual, the mad doctor then got us all up to watch an experiment, an experiment that we were about to replicate. So he exlplains what he doing and ... read more

Wow, Coral Bay is a beautiful idyllic wee place, I love it, it's my favourite place in Australia! There is just one street, a campsite, hostel and small hotel and a lovely wee beach. We spent three days here enjoying the tranquillity and beauty and also making friends with some fish. We had swithered about going diving but you have to go on a 3-day course before and it's a little pricey so we went for the snorkelling option which was absolutely amazing. We were taken out to the Ningaloo Reef on a glass bottom boat so we got a sneaky peak of the wonders beneath before we took the plunge. It was a beautiful sunny day and I bet you imagine the water would be a nice temperature, well you would be very wrong, it ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Broome July 22nd 2005

This amazing spectacle "Staircase to the moon" only happens twice a year and only in 2/3 places in the world, one of which is Broome, North-Western Australia so off we popped to enjoy the wonder. Hundreds of people flocked to Town Beach and awaited the site, lots of hippies gathered in bare feet wafting incense and chanting. The number of people there didn't seem to affect the amazing atmosphere when the awaited site began to appear, there were gasps and clapping and then complete silence. I am not sure if the pictures do it justice, it's one of those things that you have to experience I think. Our last day in Broome was spent at Cable Beach, just enjoying the sunshine. The following day we moved Southwards to Coral Bay where the Ningaloo Reef is, on ... read more
