Wow, many thrills and screams and I'm almost convinced "near-death-experiences" later, we are finally home after a long hot day in Universal Studios! It was amazing, we went on most of the 'big' rides, except for two...some of us weren't brave enough to face them...Including me!! as you can imagine the two girls' voices boxes were well used on the rides today and slightly paining tonight! It was so much fun, I don't know what else to say, the waiting time wasn't that long, the longest maybe being about 40minutes and in most waiting lines there are fans or shelter, so that fact that today was a new record breaker hot day since 1962 didn't bother us! It reached 96 deg fer last I heard! We were too busy having fun to notice and the one ... read more

Hotel Problems.. Gold members of Residence Inn, Marriott should really be getting better service than what was experienced in Tallahassee! We checked in at 7pm and housekeeping were still cleaning rooms, normal check in time is 3pm, so whats going on? An apology would have smoothed things over but instead the receptionist was rude and aggresive! So Jenni had to remind her who the customer is and that it's not the customer's fault for checking into a hotel... we then left and found another Residence Inn 3miles down the road... Most of us slept ok, but for the driver and navigator it was Hell-Hotel! Children running up and down the passages, people talking and smoking under their bedroom window, this all at 12:30am and the reception guy didn't give two hoots! But later in the day ... read more

Oohhh Yeahhhh, New Orleans.... There is no New Orleans without the jazz. N.O is well know for it's jazz, architecture, art and food, and we experienced them all! We stayed in a French Hotel slap bang in the French Quarter, listened to a live jazz band playing at a coffee shop (and poked our heads in the doorway of restaurants where ever we heard 'em) and ate at the famous GUMBO SHOP, where they serve...GUMBO!(stew with European,Caribbean African influences) and other things of course like traditional "PO-BOY" (sandwich made of deli meat piled high, topped with gravy), Jambalaya( a Creole version of Paella).Yum! One can really see the French influence, I guess that's why they call it the French Quarter! haha! But in between the neat tiny little French buildings there were a few burnt down, ... read more

Another long drive ahead, but it was broken up by a little fun run shopping session.. we only had an hour to cover a lotta widely spread out shops, atleast I got a few things and exercise! We also stopped at a really good Texan Road stop, it had a funky gift shop and really awesome food, but reviews say they shouldn't do sushi! I had "pulled pork" and it was exactly what I imagined it to be, yummy yummy in my tummy! At another Welcome centre (it couldv'e been in Louisiana) there was the tiniest little humming bird buzzing around the bird feeder, I first thought it was a moth or a bee! It is amazing to see how it hovers and keeps it head absolutely still as it sips the sugar drops from the ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » The Colony May 18th 2011

Texas (I love Texas!) It was a very long drive to Texas and we could feel the weather getting a little warmer. There isn’t much to look at on the road, only here and there we would pass a forgotten little town where the houses are slowly withering away, rusty cars stand abandoned and grass is slowly consuming the remains..a very sad sight and one can’t help but wonder what story each house could tell. We packed our breakfast and lunch snacks and could eat on the road without stopping for too long. We found a smart Texan Service welcome centre where we could sit and enjoy our lunch. The “Tornado Shelter” and “Rattlesnake” signs were a little worrying but it all added to the experience, and no…we didn’t come either… We could see we were ... read more

Santa Fe, New Mexico We had to stop a few times to take ‘Route 66’ pics and toilet breaks of course! Sometimes it’s cutting it a bit close, and as soon as we see a gas station we have to pull over and use the facilities New Mexico It’s the Mexico on this side of the border, and as you would imagine it’s full of Mexicans (Indians as well)… The little flat clay houses seem to blend in with the landscape and gives this place a very ‘natural’ feel. The town centre had some very interesting buildings and sculptures but in sharp contrast to that we found an intersection where the guys love showing off their ‘bouncy’ gangster cars! It’s so funny to see the car come bouncing past, first the front, up and down, up ... read more

So we're on the road again, this time to Flagstaff! Where?? As we travel about we are forced to speak "American", beacause people here just do not understand our English! It gets very funny at times...I asked for 'milk' and they could not understand me....so how many times can you say 'milk, miiiiilk, meeeelk, mulk, oh for pete's sake... that stuff that comes from a cow and you put it in your coffee', 'in what?' ....' in Coffee,... (they stare at me with a blank look on face and I reppeat...caffffeeeeee, koffie, cafe, cofe, ohhh mannn...when you don't have tea you have...caffeeehhhhhh!!!'.... this happens a lot! maybe if I speak Afrikaans they will understand?? We stopped for breakfast somewhere...can't remember where...in the middle of nowhere in the desert somewhere... We went into Lotta Lou's Cafe, us ... read more

GLITZ, GLAM AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN… The scenery is changing once again and so are our outfits! We went from thick hoodie jackets to shorts, flip flops and strappy tops in just a couple of hours. We drove through the Mojave Desert and saw quite a few Joshua trees, they look so lonely in this rugged landscape but still so graceful and proud. About 10hours of driving later we were welcomed by tall buildings and Palm trees, “Welcome to Las Vegas”!!!!! We drove down the strip in search of a hotel that would suit everyone’s’ needs, after taking a look in a brand new hotel with about 4000 rooms the decision was made to keep on looking..it’s very scary thinking about the size of these hotels! We finally found rest at the Venetian. What a gorgeous ... read more

Yay!!! The Golden Gate Bridge! What a piece of engineering! This bridge is about 2.7km long and 27m wide and about 67m above the high water mark, how the heck did they manage that? It is a spectacular view, the tall towers and the network of all the cables keeping chaos together, the gusty wind creating choppy waves and a powerful current making the water speed by..and a little to the right Alcatraz!! I should have been blonde..I had no idea it was in Frisco so BONUS!!! I got to see another thing I have always wanted to see! I was surprised that it was so small, way smaller than our Robben Island but way more cooler looking! As per usual we dumped our suitcases in our rooms and hit the road to explore! It was ... read more

The Avenue of The Giants...and they weren't kidding!! Words can not describe this experience...so enjoy the pics..... Ok, I can't help myself...it was amazing! These trees make a person feel like a speck of dust in a sandstorm! It was an experience I will never forget, the forest air was slightly sweet and earthy, here and there a ray of sunlight pierced through the heavy canopy and lit up the ground where baby giants are making a start in the race for life. The bark is surprisingly soft and feels a little moist and hollow (noticed this as I was on a little tree hugging expedition), it's amazing to think just how strong these trees are, they do not grow deep roots but instead grow support branches that keep them balanced. (just a little sideline fact..) ... read more
