This place must be awesome in winter, but for now it is absolutely gorgeous! Some of the trees are changing colour, leaving the landscape dotted in pretty yellows, reds, greens and golds. There are still so many little flowers around and the place just seems to burst with colour. We could see the ski slopes behind our hotel, it really looks like a lot of fun. This is definitaley a place for "outdoorsy" people. In the evening we took the free bus to the little town centre, it happened to be the openining night of the October Beer Festival! Some people were dressed in traditional clothing and carried along their own beer mugs (Stein), some if them were so big- I think those little ladies drinking out of them should have worn life jackets! It really is such ... read more

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park This is a forest of giants, big old giants! The General Sherman Tree is the world’s largest tree, about 2700 years old, its largest branch is about 2.15m in diameter, thicker than most other tree’s trunks!. These sequoia trees have a special type of bark that seems to be resilient to fungi, insects and also fire resistant. The wood is so impenetrable or unable to decay that piles of sawdust can still be found in Grant Grove’s Big Stump Basin where sequoias were cut for lumber over 100 years ago – this ability helps them to survive for centuries. Most of them die because they topple over as they don’t have deep penetrating roots… poor big guys! The general Grant tree is the world’s third-largest tree and has the greatest ... read more

Yosemite We were originally booked into a cabin but on arrival at the park gates we received warning pamphlets about the Hantavirus outbreak that’s been on the news for a few weeks, a rare but serious disease that can be fatal.. so after checking out the cabin – which would have been awesome under normal conditions the decision was made to find other accommodation, it was getting dark, there were road works, we didn’t know our way around and most places were fully booked! We found even better accommodation at Tanya Lodge, an amazing resort with wonderful views and outdoor activities on offer. We were surrounded by trees and only a couple of miles outside the actual park. The air was so fresh and crisp; I wish I could have bottled the air! We went for ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver September 18th 2012

Our cruise came to an end in Vancouver on Friday, after clearing customs we picked up a rental car and headed for our hotel (Marriott Pinnacle) which was close to the port. After dumping our luggage we went to Granville Island Farmers Market for a bite to eat. It's not easy to describe Vancouver, amazing architecture, Pretty flower baskets and arrangements in the streets, stunning skyline, mountain peaks, so very French and one of the prettiest cities I have ever seen. We managed to pop in to Stanley Park - a great place for families or romantics to hang out for the day with a picnic basket or just to stroll around, I could easily have spent a whole day in the park but we had to move on, it's still a VERY LONG drive to ... read more

Last Day at Sea Finally we got treated blue skies and it was just in time for our last day at sea. Blue skies above and blue ocean all around, it was so peaceful and the best way to end our cruise.. Entertainment included a staff talent show and a final comedy and musical show. At sunset there were a few Orca whales next to the ship and then what seemed to be hundreds of dolphins swimming just behind us jumping out the water as if to say “goodbye”, it was so special! Some have asked we do whole day, but I can honestly say that not once was I bored with nothing to do..and I didn’t even take part in most of the activities… There was always something to do: taking photos from the deck, ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Ketchikan September 10th 2012

Ketchikan Another sleepy village nestled between mountain and sea with amazing scenery, somehow I just can’t get enough of the views. Ketchikan is Tlingit Indian for “Thundering Wings of an Eagle” ,that is because the town takes the shape of an eagle in flight when viewed from deer Mountain. We were warned about the “traffic ninjas”, these pedestrian crossing attendants take their job VERY seriously and if anyone should step over the sidewalk before they instructed too they get very upset! I guess it upsets the whole town’s traffic system when a ship or two bring in an extra 3000 people… Shore excursions available were – floatplane or boat to Misty Fjords, flightseeing and I think someone mentioned snorkelling! On board entertainment in theatre “iBroadway” – music from Broadway past and present.. We had the best ... read more

Icy Strait Point Icy Strait Point is close to Hoonah, where one can find the the largest native Tlingit Indian settlement in Alaska. There is a historic (mid 1900s) salmon cannery which is now a museum and……………………………not much else!!! Oh I forgot, “the world’s largest zip-rider” is here too! It’s 1,63km long, a 397m vertical drop and reaching up to 97kmph and 92m above the ground! It seemed like fun but looking up at the drop point seemed too scary for me! So what else was there to do…a whale and marine mammals cruise, Spasski River Valley walk and Bear search…I think we will pass on that, especially after a man was just killed by a bear in Dinali! Only about 260 people live here.. so if you want to live in a little place where ... read more

Skagway Stepping into Skagway was like stepping back into time, 1899 perhaps… another Gold rush town, they managed to preserve that olden day feel by keeping saloons and dance halls. It’s also in a very pretty setting, surrounded by green hills and snow-capped mountains Some of the shore excursions available – White Pass Scenic Railway , it’s a train ride on a vintage rail car that takes one through the famous White Yukon Rail route to the Summit. Another option was to go on a Glacier Point Wilderness Safari, this takes you to the face of the Davidson Glacier in a 31 Foot voyager canoe, whales and sea lions often pop up on these safaris. After our visit to the town we were back on board to start our own table tennis tournament, well I was ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Juneau September 10th 2012

Juneau – a pretty name for a pretty place This was our first stop where we could disembark and stroll through the little town, connect to wifi and be overwhelmed by all the Alaskan curios and gift shops! Soon enough we realised that as in any other touristy place in the world that all the shops sell the same thing..they just swop animals…a bear fridge magnet, a totem pole magnet, a bear cap, Alaskan wolves fleece jackets… We went for a coffee and the best ever Biscotti I have ever encountered in the little town, we had to spend $5 in the shop for each device we wanted to connect with - to be able to use their Wi-Fi, that gave us a chance to touch base and check emails, send messages home that we survived ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Hubbard Glacier September 10th 2012

After a very rocky 14 hours we arrived very very close to Hubbard Glacier about 400m!, a 122km long glacier that took 400 years to reach the point where it's at now, so the foot of the glacier that we saw in the picture is about 400years old! On our way to there we passed a few stunning icebergs...couldn't help but think..... "Titanic"!!!! But the captain and 'pilot' that they picked up on the way seemed to know what they were doing.. It's about 9,65km wide and about 125m from top to sealevel (high) and another 100m below sealevel! This glacier is moving fast and as it moves calving takes place, it sounds like gunshots or thunder going off as the ice cracks and breaks off, it was absolutely amazing being SO close to it and ... read more
