So we're on the road again, this time to Flagstaff! Where??
As we travel about we are forced to speak "American", beacause people here just do not understand our English! It gets very funny at times...I asked for 'milk' and they could not understand me....so how many times can you say 'milk, miiiiilk, meeeelk, mulk, oh for pete's sake... that stuff that comes from a cow and you put it in your coffee', 'in what?' ....' in Coffee,... (they stare at me with a blank look on face and I reppeat...caffffeeeeee, koffie, cafe, cofe, ohhh mannn...when you don't have tea you have...caffeeehhhhhh!!!'.... this happens a lot! maybe if I speak Afrikaans they will understand??
We stopped for breakfast somewhere...can't remember where...in the middle of nowhere in the desert somewhere... We went into Lotta Lou's Cafe, us 6 walked in and besides the round table of locals we filled the place! It seemed a little dodge but they were so friendly and sweet and we were entertained by all the working antiques on display inside and out.. from old, and I mean real old 'music machines' that played tunes from what sounded like 1910 to a cool Coke fridge with funny
ornaments and black and white family photo's on it and ancient cars out in the road.. The old oomie there was more than happy to demonstrate how to wind up the music box and play an old record for us..it was like a scene from a movie..wow, it was so surreal..
As we left and as Uncle Dave and Aunty always do, they offered the kind lady a tract with a Bible based hope for the future, her jaw dropped and she stepped back, and shouted "are you Jehovah's Witnesses?" yip...she was so excited 'cos her mom told her that there were many all over the world and here we were, all the way from South Africa..sharing the same message and good news that her mom always talks about, it was such a special moment, in the remomtest parts of the earth, there we are, united in worship! Jenni got their card and the old man, Bob (owner) insisted she writes to them when we are home so that they can know we made it home safe! They do not have email...not even a computer! Yikes!! Snail mail!
So after that heartwarming experience we were on our way to
Flagstaff..... we stopped at the Grand Canyon, OH MY HAT it is even more than I expected! It's chasm (new word for me!! as I learnt) is 277miles long and about 18 miles wide (yes, I'm working in miles now!ok that's 446km and 29km.) and they still have about 5 Indian tribes living around there. The Colorado river runs through it and from way up where we were it seems like a little stream about to dry up and disapear into the ground.
We braved the 98 steps up the Desert View Watchtoer that sits about 2.2km above the river...it offeres one of the few views of the bottom of the Canyon and Colorado River. This really was a highlight and like all the previous things we have seen it's the natural attractions that really moves me deep inside..
We arrived at our Hotel that I'm trying really hard to remember as I'm writing this...we have been in SO many that it's hard to remember what we did a day or two ago! Oh, as I was saying...we arrived at Hotel did about 4 loads od washing and drying, went to a supermarket and then went to bed...
