Oh My Aching Feet! Today has been a long day of walking. I hope I get this post finished before I fall asleep. It’s almost 9:30pm here and we’ve been up since 5:30am. We had a local expert/guide take us around Warsaw this morning – the new Jewish museum, the historic buildings everywhere, the park dedicated to Chopin, etc. We ended-up at the old towne square and walked through the area before we explored the area again on our own for two more hours. From there we were taken to Wilanow Palace. We toured the outside gardens and lake by the palace (gorgeous) and the inside of the palace – queen’s room, king’s room, etc.. – it was gold and gaudy and magnificent. The weather was perfect today and it was beautiful and windy outside but ... read more

Today has been much better than expected! We arrived in Poland before 4pm so the bus ride didn’t seem too bad. We had time to explore a bit on our own this afternoon. Actually, we were in Poland at 10am but it took a long time to reach Warsaw. We had a lunch stop at a Polish restaurant where everyone had preordered their meals so they were ready for us when we arrived – Polish schnitzel with vinegar-based coleslaw for me and chicken stuffed with vegetables for Kamie. We shared and they were both good. We arrived into Warsaw, Poland long before we made it to our hotel because traffic was so crazy. Warsaw is 1.8 million people, 2 million with commuters during the day. It feels like every bit of that and then some. I ... read more

Today was a wonderful day in Vilnius, Lithuania! It is just after 9pm and we have returned to our room after a beautiful leisurely walk on the pedestrian street here outside of our hotel. It is cool and the leaves are turning colors and it is like a painting outside. To back up… we had a full city tour this morning for around 3.5 hours. We toured a Roman Catholic Orthodox Church from the 1600s. There is no way my pictures can capture the details of the carvings inside the church but I tried. There was also a funky bar just next door to the church. I suppose this is okay since they are Catholics. LOL We visited the town hall square and there seemed to be churches – Gothic, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, etc… everywhere…. In ... read more

We are in the country of Lithuania tonight. I like it! The vibe here is good and the buildings – everywhere – are gorgeous. It’s like walking around a fake town and our hotel isn’t even in the “old towne” section. Their “normal” buildings are beautiful. Kamie & I walked around town on our own for a couple of hours during lunch today and then at 3pm we took a group tour of the Museum of Genocide or the KGB Museum. This is the original prison that was the headquarters for the Gestapo during the German occupation and the headquarters for the KGB during the Russian occupation. I will tell the stories below the pictures but I warn you, they are extremely sad. At one point during the basement prison tour, I felt it was too ... read more

We had lots of time to explore Latvia today but it was raining all day so we toured, took a nap, and then walked around the neighborhood and bought a few items tonight. It’s 7pm and we are in our room for the night ~ that’s a first! I will say most of the intriguing places we are scheduled to visit on this trip are in Lithuania and Poland where we will spend the most nights on this trip. For now, Latvia does not disappoint. The architecture is almost goth-like. It’s interesting but I would not want to live in a town where I felt as though Batman would need to save me from the bad people. Just a note about our tour days so far. Typically, our days are long on this tour. We are ... read more

Today was the first day it was beautiful outside - sunny and in the 40s/50s. ? We had very little time in Tallinn, Estonia today before we checked-out and the bus drove us down the coast of Estonia into Riga, Latvia. Our bus has huge glass windows so it’s like being in a convertible – you can see all the landscape, stores, homes, vehicles, etc. It was only a four hour drive but we stopped a couple of times along the way at odd little shops selling strange souvenirs and terrible food. Kamie purchased lunch at one of the stops - soup which included tomatoes, green olives, what looked to be cutup hot dogs, some type of beef and red sausages…all in this one bowl full of orange grease floating everywhere. I swear he will try ... read more

Today was a good day in Tallinn, Estonia. We were awake early today and ate breakfast with Paco and Wilfred, two gentlemen from a retirement community just outside of Brownsville, Texas. Paco has been to over 100 countries but he can’t hear a damn thing. Wilfred is super sweet and funny. Wilfred told us that Paco kept getting questioned about his wine in his suitcase yesterday but since he couldn’t hear them and they couldn’t understand him, they just let him go. We learned at dinner tonight that our escapade with customs has been talked about by seemingly everyone on the tour and the majority of them seem to think we were setup. Most of them have no trust it seems.. at least not in Estonia’s custom agents. They are all on "our side." So, just ... read more

We are here and it’s been quite the adventure. As I write this, we have been awake over 31 hours. I have NEVER been this emotionally or physically exhausted traveling. Our flight out of Chicago on the world’s second largest passenger plane was delayed 30 minutes because 70 passengers were missing. The plane was huge by the way so 70 passengers didn’t feel like lots of missing people. Lufthansa is a German airline so the overhead announcements were in German followed by incredibly muffled and quick announcements in a hard-to-understand English. We boarded the plane, waited for the missing passengers, and finally, the German pilot comes on and says a bunch of gibberish in German and follows the announcement in English with “No passengers so we leave.” And so we left 30 minutes late with lots ... read more

No interesting pictures or stories tonight. Quick entry to say Hello. We are in Chicago. We were here before 1pm. Not much to say. We left our house around 4:30am and thanks to the thick fog, the road construction between Houston and Rolla, and the backed-up traffic in St Louis, we arrived at the airport exactly on time. We flew United Airlines ~ St Louis to Chicago ~ our paperwork said 1 hour 28 minutes and neither of us thought that was correct. We have made that flight multiple times prior at 45 minutes. Kamie timed our flight from takeoff to landing and it was 43 minutes. We sat in a holding area with multiple other United planes waiting for another plane to leave before we could taxi to our gate… so that was another 25 ... read more

This is a new blog site for us. Travelpod was shutdown. I loved that site but it's no longer available. I'm trying this new site. The way this new blog site works is... you read the entry, you see one picture, you scroll down just a bit and you will see all the other pictures. I think you can leave comments and then I may have to approve them before you can see your own comments?? I don't know yet. I am using this blog mainly as a way to let mom and dad know we are alive and well. You can subscribe to this blog site and you will get an ... read more
