Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada May 9th 2017

Geo: 37.1882, -3.60667We set out early this morning to head to Granada. This part of the Costa del Sol is heavily developed, and with it, traffic! This morning had the added disadvantage of an accident during rush hour on the coast highway. We wove our way through some communities until we reached an inland toll highway, which was then much faster going. Nevertheless, it was a 3 hour drive to Granada. We took the coastal road, and were impressed by the amount of fruit and vegetable production along the coast east of Malaga. We were forewarned to reserve Alhambra tickets months ago, and it was a good thing we did, as the Alhambra was completely sold out by the time we arrived. Our tickets gave us entry to the Nasrid Palaces at 2:30, and we used the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ronda May 8th 2017

Geo: 36.742, -5.16641Today we enjoyed a stunning drive along the Mediterranean coast then up through the countryside to Ronda. Though the road was a bit rough, the scenery was stunning, and the mountains dotted with sparkling white villages. We took full advantage of all the wonderful viewpoints along our way. One pretty hillside town where we stopped to enjoy the view was called Guacin, which had a fabulous view of the Guardiario Valley. Ronda is a charming historical town well known for its 18th century bridge called Puente Nuevo (new bridge) which connects the old Moorish town to the newer city. The bridge took forty years to build and sits 100m above El Tajo Gorge. We walked through the quaint old town before enjoying the amazing views as we crossed Puente Nuevo. We had a coffee in ... read more

Geo: 36.4247, -5.14485Today we enjoyed a lazy morning before heading off to Estepona for coffee. It is another beautiful sunny day so we had coffee at an outdoor cafe located in Plaza de Las Flores, the central square. Then we wandered through the town looking at some street art and local park areas. There are beautiful flowers on every street. We enjoyed empanadas for lunch at a different outdoor cafe. As we walked the beach promenade today we could just see the outline of Northern Africa as well as the Rock of Gibraltar. Estepona is a clean little city (though they do not clean up after their pets!!). On our drive home we drove through some of the streets where our condo is located. It is very quiet here at the moment, but in the summer ... read more

Geo: 36.4247, -5.14485We woke up this morning to the sounds of birds chirping and it reminded us of Costa Rica. We had a cup tea and a few biscuits on the patio before showering and heading out for the morning. We found our way into the lovely central area of Estepona Where we wandered up the narrow streets lined with potted geraniums. In the town center we found a place where Jim could buy a Sim card for his phone only to find out he needed his passport to purchase one. We decided to have a little breakfast and cafe con leche before returning to the condo. On our return to Estepona we purchased the card and then visited the tourist info office for maps of this area. We found a coffee bar on a pretty ... read more

Geo: 36.7197, -4.42003Once arriving at London Heathrow we watched the departure board for our gate. They are now following the new system not announcing the gate till 20 minutes before departure. We are flying again with British Airways into Malaga, Spain but this time we are flying economy. No "hello Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell, how are you today"! We are in much smaller seats and much tighter quarters and there are no frills. No beverages (including water) unless you buy them. However, the staff are pleasant and actually gave me bags of ice for my medication bag.On arrival to Malaga we stood in line to use the new custom kiosks only to find out that they were for EU citizens only. No signs mentioning this. So then we had to get into another lineup to wait ... read more

Geo: 49.8868, -119.497Today we are flying from Kelowna to Calgary where we will catching an international flight to London Heathrow. Jim surprised me by booking business class tickets for this leg our our flight. Tomorrow is my birthday so this will be a nice way to enjoy it! We used the business class lounge before boarding our flight with British Airways. This plane had pod-type, lay-flat seating in business class. What a treat, as we actually did manage to sleep through part for a trip. It's an interesting business model the airlines follow. If you are a business class paying passenger, they refer to you by your name, and they cannot do enough for you! If you are an economy class paying passenger, they treat you like some sh_t they are forced to transport.... read more

Geo: 26.4789, -81.7788This morning we packed up our things as later this evening we fly to Costa Rica. Enroute back to Miami we met Chris at an Everglades Swampland airboat tour. We enjoyed a quick visit before the three of us headed out on our tour. It was great fun and we would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. At the end of the tour we were allowed to hold a baby alligator. It was amazing and felt very different from what I expected. We then said goodbye to Chris and headed off to Miami. It was wonderful to finally met Chris and we hope they soon will come visit us in Costa Rica.Arriving back in Miami we returned our Hertz rental car. What a gong show that was! Terrible service. Geo: 26.4789, -81.7788Another beautiful day in Florida. Today we met Chris and Glenn at Lovers Key State Park to go kayaking. We enjoyed paddling for a few hours. Unfortunately we did not see any Manatee. We then stopped at Coconut Jack's along the water for a nice seafood lunch. It was nice to spend more time with Chris and Glenn.... read more

Geo: 26.4789, -81.7788Today was a fun day spent shopping at lots of different malls. There are malls everywhere in Florida, definitely a shoppers paradise! We found a replacement suitcase for Jim's mangled one, but still on the look out for his replacement sandals. After hours of shopping we headed to a place called Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. We enjoyed wandering on 1.2 miles of boardwalk, viewing birds, a few alligators, etc. It was a wonderful way to spend a few hours. After our hectic day of shopping and bird watching we stopped for a pizza at Aurelio's. We ordered a Chicago deep dish pizza. It was delicious ( though not as good as in Chicago) but huge and very rich. It will be feeding us for the next two nights.... read more
