Geo: 42.8512, 2.60354Today we headed out to explore a remote and beautiful region of France with historical castles. We visited two castle perched on seemingly inaccessible summits. They were originally built as defences against the Spanish, and the castles sheltered the Cathars in the 13th century. We enjoyed a lovely picnic lunch before starting our hike up to the first castle called Queribus. Queribus is perched on a peak at a height of 2,388 ft., and offers spectacular views. The castle is well preserved with stairways, tunnels, dungeons and vaulted central hall. We were amazed at the fabulous views. We could even see the far peaks of the Pyrenees. From Queribus we hiked back to our car and continued our drive to Peyrepertuse Castle across the valley. This castle is at the height of 2,625 ft, rising out ... read more

Geo: 43.1836, 3.00419It was a hot one here today. We decided to spend the day exploring the historic centre of Narbonne. Once again we viewed the Les Halles, Cours Mirabeau, and Promenade des Barques, before heading off to enjoy lunch at a crepe shop. We tried both savory and sweet crepes. Yummy! In the afternoon we climbed up the tower at the Archbishop's Palace to enjoy a fabulous view of Narbonne and surrounding area. Then we visited Cathedral Saint Just et Saint Pasteur. This cathedral was built between 1272-1340, but remains unfinished even today. The local town council refused to demolish the town wall to provide the stones to continue building, for fear of an invasion from the English. The interior features 130' vaulted ceilings, frescoes and huge Flemish tapestries. We then visited the Horreum which is ... read more

Geo: 43.2126, 2.3561Today we visited the town of Carcassonne. Carcassone is an excellent example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and surrounding buildings, its streets and Gothic Cathedral. The lower Carcassonne area known as Ville Basse dates back to the Middle Ages and nowadays is a lovely area to stroll, shop or enjoy a coffee. We enjoyed our time in Carcassonne. On our drive back to Narbonne we drove through the countryside and at one point stopped in a quiet little village for a delicious cold beer.... read more

Geo: 43.1072, 3.08641Today we ventured back into Narbonne to explore "Les Halles". Les Halles was built in 1901 and is made out of wrought-iron and glass. Nowadays it is famous across the south of France for its indoor market. We enjoyed wandering through the market and picking out different meats, cheeses and fruits to try. We we then headed south to the Mediterranean thru many vineyards. We arrived at Gruissan, a fishing village on a hill between two lagoons. We enjoyed walking through the narrow alleyways that encircle the ruins of a 12th century tower. After a leisurely lunch we hiked up to the tower. We then had a short visit at the Gruissan Salt Flats before heading back to Narbonne.... read more

Geo: 43.1836, 3.00419We woke up to a beautiful sunny day here in France. We had a lazy morning around the house and then headed into Narbonne centre for lunch and a walk around. It is a pretty town and we enjoyed wandering around the medieval core and its lively streets. Narbonne dates back to 118BC when it was built as a trading post along the newly-constructed Via Dolmitia. Via Dolmitia was the old cobblestone Roman road that joined Spain to Italy.... read more

Geo: 43.1836, 3.00419We arrived in France at noon after a leisurely drive from Barcelona. The car has GPS, so we easily found our home. The cleaning lady was just finishing up, so she welcomed us and let us in the home. It is a nice home. We will be pet sitting a Bengal cat named Eyra, four garden turtles, one huge marine tank and one large fresh water fish tank.We picked up our friend Sonya from the train station. Sonya is a good friend and will be joining us during our travels in France. From the train station we stopped and picked up a pizza for dinner and a few groceries. Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992We arrived at Gatwick in London and found a place to have some breakfast. The terminal was very busy, but it seems that the reason is that all passengers are confined to the shopping area until 1 hour before their departure (the departure boards do not publish gate information until 1 hour before departure). When the gate info is finally published, there is a mad dash for the gates! This may be our new least-favourite airport (replacing LAX).We flew to Barcelona with Monarch Airlines. Another no-frills airline, but a nice new, clean plane. Just as our plane was being pushed from the gate, the air traffic controllers in France launched a strike and, as we are flying over France, our flight is delayed about 30 minutes until they are able to get someone to ... read more

Geo: 49.8868, -119.497Today we flew from Kelowna to Calgary with a short layover before flying onto Gatwick, London, England aboard WestJet Airlines. We were delayed leaving Calgary due to an electrical storm in the area. Our flight was not full so one of us was able to snag three empty seats and sleep most the way! WestJet is pretty basic; it offered no meal service unless you purchased it, plus you had to have your own tablet or rent one to for entertainment. The plane was pretty old and tired. Otherwise, the flight was uneventful. ... read more
