Today we visited the town of Carcassonne. Carcassone is an excellent example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and surrounding buildings, its streets and Gothic Cathedral. The lower Carcassonne area known as Ville Basse dates back to the Middle Ages and nowadays is a lovely area to stroll, shop or enjoy a coffee.

We enjoyed our time in Carcassonne. On our drive back to Narbonne we drove through the countryside and at one point stopped in a quiet little village for a delicious cold beer.
