Geo: 24.8466, 110.281We slept a little later today. After breakfast, a driver picked us up, along with 3 other travellers, for a kayaking trip on the Li River. We drove east of Yangshuo to the village of Dutou, where we met our kayaking guide. He equipped us each with a kayak, and followed us on a motorized raft. It was another sunny and hot, though smoggy, day. The Li River is quite wide, but fairly shallow. There were occasional faster sections of water, but for the most part the river was a pleasant paddle. In this section there were few other recreational boats, but a few fishermen, and the occasional water buffalo soaking neck-deep in the river. There were occasional bursts of firecrackers from the banks of the river, as today is the Mid-Autumn Festival. We ... read more

Geo: 24.8466, 110.281Today we were up early to have a driver take us to an area on the YuLong River where we had a relaxing morning floating down a river on a bamboo boat. On the boat we sat on secure lawn chairs with an umbrella to keep us out of the direct sun. We arrived early so it would not be too busy or too hot. As our poler moved us down the river we went over many weirs which really added to the fun. Near the end of our trip the river was definitely getting busier. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning.Back at our hotel we had something to eat and then relaxed in our room. The weather has been quite hot since we arrived here.... read more

Geo: 24.8466, 110.281It rained here last night but it was all finished by the time we woke. After a late breakfast we organized ourselves and caught a hotel shuttle into the town of Yangshuo. The population of Yangshuo is only 300,000, so quite a change from the millions of Xian, Chengdu and Beijing! This area is surrounded by karst peaks, winding rivers and beautiful scenery. We wandered through different areas of the town before stopping for some lunch at a small local cafe. Unfortunately, it has been a real struggle to find good food in many of the places we have visited in China. Then we found a local supermarket to buy a few snack foods to enjoy later. They had some weird types of potatoes chips - spicey hot beef, cucumber, BBQ chicken, etc. Many items in ... read more

Geo: 24.8466, 110.281After breakfast we caught a taxi to Chengdu airport. We really enjoyed our time in Chengdu especially the area we were staying. We loved the historic feel, the vibrancy of this area.Today we flew with Shandong Airlines, and once again we had a late departure with a Chinese airline. On our 1 1/2 hour flight we were served a full course hot meal. Western airlines need to learn from these airlines. A taxi picked us up at the Guilin airport and drove us over an hour to our hotel just outside of the town of Yangshuo. After settling in we enjoyed a beer out in the garden area. We had an okay dinner at the hotel.... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07Up early, in a taxi to the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. This is a large park, with pandas of different age classes in very large enclosures. In the early morning, the cubs were very active, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing them frolic and play. We enjoyed the opportunities to take lots of photos. The weather was very good, and here in the bamboo forest the thick smog of China was less noticeable. A very reasonable cost - $6 for the 1/2 hour taxi ride, $10 each to get into the park. Then we took a city bus and a taxi back to our hotel zone, with ice cream en route.... read more

Geo: 30.675, 104.072After breakfast we wandered around the historical area we are staying. Lovely old buildings with fancy rooftops really make you feel like you are back in old China. Then it was a metro ride to Jinsha Site Museum. This site was discovered in 2001 during real estate construction. They unearthed a major site containing 3000 year old objects from the Shu Kingdom. The museum is an expansive complex with a building showing the excavation site and another beautiful building displaying many objects from the excavated area. Over 6000 relics were found there including functional and decorative items. There were pottery and tools, jade artifacts, stone carvings and ornate gold masks. There were also a huge amount of elephant tusks unearthed there. We found the museum very informative and well displayed. At the end of our ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07Today we have a little sunshine popping through the smog. It is unbelievable how thick the smog can get here. We often have scratchy throats and eyes after a day out. Plus we daily inhale at least a few packages of cigarettes. It seems like most of the population here are smokers. They still smoke in restaurants which really is revolting.Today we hired a driver to take us to the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, and then to the airport. As we got farther out of the city the sky became a bit more sunny. We enjoyed our time at the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi. Emperor Jingdi was emperor in the Han Dynasty from 157 to 141 BC. The site had two sections for us to visit - the museum and the excavation site. The ... read more

Geo: 34.26, 108.951We had another smoggy and rainy day here in Xian. After breakfast we walked to the train station and caught a bus to the Terracotta Warrior Museum. The bus ride was uneventful and took around one hour. We arrived to it raining even harder that what we had left in Xian. We took a shuttle to the museum entrance. The Terracotta Warriors were buried by the first Emperor of China in about 210 BC. They were discovered in 1974 by a peasant drilling a well. Excavation is still going on today. The warriors are all life size and incredibly detailed, each one a unique individual. They were buried in long chambers, standing on tiled floors, with wooden roofs covered with fibre mats and up to 2 metres of soil.We started our tour at Pit ... read more

Geo: 34.2602, 108.951We had a lazy start to our day, but managed to get going around 9am. We found a little cafe for breakfast and then headed out to explore the Muslim Quarter. It was fun to meander through the busy streets and see people selling fruit, food, trinkets etc. The fresh baking looked delicious. We saw people barbequeing all sorts of things on sticks. Many people were roasting walnuts as walnuts are very popular here. Nobody bothered us as we walked thru and enjoyed the sights and sounds. China is a very loud country. The people speak loud and it is quite a harsh language to listen too.We passed by the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower on our way to the city wall. We viewed the wall from below but in the afternoon returned ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9Off in the taxi at 5:30 am to one of Beijing's five train stations. On our way we passed Tianamen Square where thousands of people were waiting for the changing of the guards. The train station was huge be we found our way thru security and into our assigned waiting room. The room was packed with many other passengers. The bullet train left exactly at 7 am and was a smooth ride even at 300 k an hour. The smog was terrible throughout our train ride, with visibility little more than 500m.Upon arrival in Xi'an we took a 30 minute metro ride from the train station and then walked the four blocks to our hotel in the rain. During that whole trip we did not see another Caucasian until we were one block from ... read more
