Geo: 44.8833, -0.15Today is special, as 33 years ago our lovely daughter Allison was born! We toasted her special day with a lovely glass of Bordeaux wine at lunch! Sonya headed off early on the train for a visit to the Cite du Vin in Bordeaux. We decided to spend our day back in the pretty village of Saint Emilion. We had a nice lunch on a terrace patio in Saint Emilion before wandering through the village streets again. It was a nice way to spend one of our last days in this area. On returning home we picked up Sonya from the train station.... read more

Geo: 44.693, -0.08549This morning Sonya and Pat wandered down to the Boulangerie to pick up fresh pastries for our lunch. France being France, the Boulangeries are closed on Mondays!! So, we quickly got ourselves organized and headed out in hopes of finding a restaurant open somewhere!! We had luck in the town of Sauveterre de Guyenne. We found a place that sold sandwiches and yummy pastries. We had a nice lunch on their patio and then headed off to explore a few more backroads. Along our drive we came across some yummy blackberries which we helped ourselves to! Then on the next corner nestled in a small wooded area we came across an old 12th century Benedictine Abbey and church. The church doorway and the arches that frame it were decorated with some very interesting Romanesque ... read more

Geo: 45.0405, -0.49275Today we visited Pair-non-Pair Cave. This underground cave was discovered in the late 1800s, and was found to have been occupied by humans between 200,000 and 20,000 years ago. The cave is noteworthy for engravings of animals on the walls, believed to have been made between 33,000 and 26,000 years ago. The engravings include representations of horses, bison, deer, ibex, and even a large moose-like animal, that is now extinct. Interestingly, ibex were not present in the area at the time, leading to the conclusion that the cave's occupants travelled to mountainous areas. One of the engravings, of a horse, depicts the animal looking back over its shoulder, and exhibits correct perspective. The cave yielded over 15,000 artifacts, including tools, ornaments, animal remains, and even an ancient flute..... read more

Geo: 44.8587, 0.06384This afternoon we visited a archaeological site in the small village of Montcaret. We explored the remains of a 1st century AD Roman villa that was inhabited until the 5th century. Then in the 11th century some monks built a church on the abandoned site. The church was partly destroyed during the 16th century Wars of Religion. The cemetery and village grew up around it, erasing all traces of the villa. In 1827 it was discovered but it wasn't until 1926 that it was listed as a historical monument. Unfortunately, much of the villa still lies beneath the church and village. The residential part of the villa was at one time luxurious, and laid out around courtyard surrounded by galleries, with vast reception rooms and thermal baths. One pool was adorned with mosaics of dolphins, ... read more

Geo: 44.8374, -0.576144Today we met our home exchange hosts, Marie-Ange and Geraldine, for lunch in a suburb of Bordeaux. The restaurant was in a redecorated old home, and we ate on the lovely patio. Marie-Ange, who has lived all her life in Bordeaux, chose an excellent wine from Pessac Leognan. Like most French restaurants, this one offered a set menu, and we could choose from pork or fish. Each course was well-presented and delicious. We are trying to make the adjustment to the French custom of having a very large meal, with wine, in the middle of the day!... read more

Geo: 46.2276, 2.21375We woke up to rain today, which is a first since the start of our holiday, I think! We had a nice breakfast at the chateau before heading back to our home in Sainte Pey de Castets. We took backroads through the Bordeaux countryside, rather than main highways. Once we were on the road we stopped at the village of Monpazier for their farmers market. We enjoyed a coffee in the town square before picking up some fresh produce. We later stopped in Miramont de Guyenne for a late lunch. The rain followed us all day.... read more

Geo: 44.8913, 1.21511After a fine breakfast at Chateau de Monrecour, we headed off to Chateau de Beynac. This is a well-preserved castle, built in the 12th century, high above the cliffs on the north bank of the Dordogne. The castle is very large, and its cliffs and high walls make it an imposing defensive structure. The Dordogne was the boundary between the French and the English in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the castles in this area saw much fighting. Parts of the castle have been restored, but the work has remained faithful to original construction techniques. We were fortunate enough to find ourselves alone at the top of the ramparts high above the Dordogne - the view was stunning.Next we drove to the mountain-top bastide village of Domme. Here we had a quick lunch, ... read more

Geo: 44.8333, 1.1We were up early today to drive to the Perigord Noir, an area along the Dordogne River known for scenic chateaux and villages. We drove to La Roque-Gageac, where we had a coffee beside the river. This lovely little village is built into the cliffs along the river, and is a tourist favourite. The river is alive with canoes and kayaks, and this is something we have been wanting to do. We headed upstream to the village of Vitrac, where we were outfitted with our individual kayaks, and headed off for our 16 km float down the gentle Dordogne. After about an hour we stopped for a picnic lunch along the riverbank. Continuing on, we passed a number of beautiful chateaux. After a couple of hours we again passed La Roque-Gageac, which was even ... read more

Geo: 44.8374, -0.576144As a treat today Jim has booked us a 2CV tour of the city of Bordeaux. Bordeaux was once known as "La Belle au Bois Dormant" (Sleeping Beauty), but no longer. It is now UNESCO listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage Site. It receives 5.5 million visitors annually. We took the train from our village into Bordeaux for the day. Bordeaux is a charming city full of ancient 18th century dignity. After arriving by train and tram, it was wonderful to stroll along the thriving waterfront of the Gardonne River past chic boutiques and cafes. We then headed to the beautiful building of Place de la Bourse near the Water Mirror. Our weather was perfect to enjoy the reflections from the Water Mirror, before commencing our 2CV tour. Europe » France » Aquitaine » Libourne July 31st 2016

Geo: 44.9167, -0.23333Libourne is an old bastide town that was built by the English and lies between the Dordogne and Isle rivers. You can still see its old town port gates and the arches on the main town square. We wandered through the farmers market and picked up fresh vegetables, fruit, and some fresh oysters for our dinner. Then we walked down along the quay before heading out for lunch. We tried a restaurant our exchange couple recommended to us and the food was very good. We then enjoyed a leisurely drive back through the countryside to our home. We came across many more vineyards, chateaus and ancient churches. We never tire of this beautiful french countryside.... read more
