My original plan was to try and get from Paraguay all the way down to Uruguay and Montevideo. Due to border and bus schedule logistics however, this would prove too problematic. It was much easier to get to Buenos Aires and with a load of newly made friends waiting for me there, I thought that I might as well head there first for my planned week in the Argentinian capital before going across to Uruguay after. To get down to Buenos Aires, I boarded my first overnight bus of the trip - fourteen hours from Encarnacion. It was pretty painless in the end. I managed to type out a blog entry before getting a pretty good sleep - the semi-camas are pretty much like La-Z-Boys so I had no trouble sleeping. With only four passengers in ... read more

It was now time to take my first bus journey of the trip - a ride of around six hours from Foz do Iguazu to Encarnacion, Paraguay. Paraguay is often overlooked by travellers, what with its lack of superstar attractions. Although this fact it recognised by my Lonely Planet, it nevertheless recommended visiting Encarnacion with its brand new riverside beach and its annual grande fiesta during Carnaval. Intrigued by a country that receives little attention and with a desire to tick another country off my list, Paraguay and Encarnacion also provided me with a stop to break up the long journey from Foz do Iguacu down to Buenos Aires and Uruguay. Not that the bus I was catching was straightforward. As it was to be my first bus ride I wanted a bit of security of ... read more

So there I was sat in my dorm, surrounded by my other eleven dorm-mates. After another night without much sleep and two flights, I was exhausted. From the 33⁰C heat of Brasilia, it was a relatively chilly 16⁰C here in Foz do Iguacu. It was raining. Hard. I wasn’t feeling particularly sociable and I had administrative shit to sort out. I was feeling pretty miserable. I wanted my hotel room back. That night, I was supposed to have a quiet, early one – but by that stage I thought it’d better to try and make some friends to feel a bit more comfortable in my new surrounds rather than moping around alone. I got talking to two Brits in the hostel’s outdoor common area – Billy and Lloyd – and a Dutch guy, Siros. I didn’t ... read more

Just like I hadn't expected to stay almost two weeks in Sao Paulo, I wasn't expecting to be visiting Brasilia either. It wasn't on my route, it was out of the way. But when Bruno suggested that I follow him and Carol up there for a weekend, my interest was piqued - I had heard that it was a place like no other and although it would be expensive to get up there, it was still within my budget. So why not? What would've helped money-wise was the fact that I was charged R$150 instead of US$150 for one of my flights - I thought I had got away with it until the sharp staff at Azul Airlines gave Bruno a call notifying me of the mistake. Damn - that would have saved me a very ... read more

And so six months of travelling through Latin America has begun! As predicted in my last blog entry, leaving Barcelona was hard - my three months there has to go down as three as the most fun I have had, and I've managed to attain intermediate level Spanish to boot. The lifestyle was amazing, I made a lot of friends, and I got into a wonderful comfort zone that was difficult to leave. As such, I was determined to enjoy it to the very end and had a typically massive night out (one of many in my last week) the night before I left for Sao Paulo. Exhausted, the TAP Portugal flight I took wasn't great - a ten hour one with just one average meal, an average entertainment system and ridiculously cold air-conditioning; something I ... read more

Just four days after arriving back from Ibiza, I was off to Spain's other famous island in the Balearics; Mallorca. I had also watched many a Wild On (with Brooke Burke) and Booze Britain episode featuring this tourist favourite and once again I was finally fulfilling a teenage dream by coming here. Except, that I'm not a teenager anymore, so I was definitely not going to mix it up this weekend with a bunch of British teenage yobs emptying their stomach contents on a beach in Magaluf - there is more to see and explore on the biggest island in the Balearics, which I was determined to do. After Ibiza had left a massive hole in my bank account, I was trying to do things a bit cheaper here - thus the decision to catch an ... read more

I had always thought that the lyrics to that Vengaboys song were "we're going to eat pizza." But no - it is about that notorious Spanish party island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Ibiza. When I was at university, I remember watching all of those party documentaries such as Wild On (with Brooke Burke) and Booze Britain, on which Ibiza was regularly featured. Thousands of miles away, in my parents' house, I could only sit and admire the sun, sex, beaches, boat parties and superclubs that were appearing on my screen, wishing one day that I may be able to go. Just over a decade later and my dream was finally coming true...except that it wasn't really much of a dream anymore. Massive clubs, electro music, world-class DJs, 25€ a drink...it isn't really my ... read more

After five months away, I was back in my adopted home country of the United Kingdom. Except, that it didn't really feel like my home any more. Shorn of my old flat in West Hampstead, in which I lived for six years, being back in London just didn't feel the same. With a job and a flat, I felt part of the fabric of the city - now I felt like an outsider trying to weave myself back into the cloth without a needle. There were many things that made me remember why I love the city so much - the iconic sights, the transport system (yes, I you read that correctly - Londoners often don't realise how lucky they are), the bars and pubs, and the different neighbourhoods - but mostly because of the familiarity ... read more

Did you know that The Flintstones is banned in Dubai? They're not allowed to show it and so they don't. But Abu Dhabi do. My stint in South Africa now over, I was now on my way to London via what seemed like a joke as bad as the one above - a fifteen hour stopover in Abu Dhabi. No matter - I have a habit of making the most out of long layovers such as the ones I had in Singapore, Segovia, Seoul and Dusseldorf. Arriving in Abu Dhabi at 7.30am and departing for London at 2.00am the next morning, I pretty much had an entire day to check out the sights and sounds of Abu Dh... read more

So this is it. I’m down to the final week of my South African adventure. The day I touched down in Cape Town feels like a lifetime ago. Cape Town was amazing so you could say that I started with a bang – I intend to end things the way I started them so I am spending my last week doing what most tourists come to South Africa to do; a safari! Kruger Park is arguably the most famous wildlife park in the world to do a safari in, so I thought that’d be a good place to start. Loads of travellers that I have met have said it was the highlight of their entire trip. My friends Kevin and Nikki recommended a company called Tydon Safaris who they did their safari with and they claimed ... read more
