Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today, I want to be a part of it, New York New York... Yep, entry no.3 is coming to you from the Big Apple! It's nice and warm here, about 25 degrees here during the day - not as hot as it was in Boston. Coming down from Boston, you enter New York City from the north, so the first area you see in NYC is The Bronx. Abandoned, dilapidated buildings, packs of what look like gangsters loitering with intent on the sidewalk, and graffiti to the days - welcome to New York City. My hostel is on 103rd St, and as the bus is driving southwards, and the streets get closer to 103rd with no visible improvement in the area, I start to get anxious (as it turns out, ... read more

Phew, it's hot here in Boston - it's probably around 35 degrees, but it's not dry like in Las Vegas, so you feel it more. Having lived almost nocturnally in Las Vegas, my bodyclock was not exactly properly calibrated. An overnight flight to Boston (I can't sleep on planes) sent it completely haywire. When I arrived at the hostel in Boston at 9am, I decided to have a nap; and then got up at 5pm. A day completely wasted. Of course, I couldn't sleep the following night and the obese, smelly Persian guy in my dorm - who proved the theory that the bigger they come, the louder they snore - didn't exactly help matters. My mood wasn't helped when I discovered my overspending in Vegas meant that I can only spend a paltry US$28 a ... read more

Hello everybody! Welcome to my first travel blog entry on the road, coming to you from a sweltering Las Vegas. Yesterday, the temperature was 33 degrees - at midnight. During the day it is in excess of 40 degrees. The heat here is very dry, so you don't sweat much, but the wind is hot and outside, it feels like you're in an oven. Well, this is Las Vegas, a city that never sleeps - and neither do you ;-) Having had about 4 hours sleep on a 13 hour flight with a 6 hour stopover in LA, myself and my friend Davies finally arrived in Las Vegas. The first thing to greet passengers as they come through the gate is the tune of about 50 slot machines - only in Vegas ;-) The first hotel ... read more

Hi All, Welcome to my blog and my first entry! It is just hours now, before I embark on what will truly be the most fun and exciting 3 months of my life. It feels a bit weird to be honest - feelings of excitement, nervousness and sadness all in equal measure. I don't know when I'll be in New Zealand next - but hopefully this blog will help me feel close to home while on my travels. But as I think of all places I'm gonna see and the people I'll meet, I know that I won't be feeling sad for long ;-) When I get the chance, I will publish my first proper blog entry - as for now, adios amigos, and I will see you when I see you! Keep in touch, Derek ... read more
