The fear of expensive Cuban prices, the fear of expensive near-future European prices, the fear of getting ripped off by Cubans and my personal financial situation, all combined to make me try to do everything as cheaply as possible – to save money at any opportunity. Basically, I was petrified to spend money here. I’m not normally a scrooge abroad but needs must. Which was why I found myself waiting at my hostel in Havana for the four Dutch guys I’d been drinking with the previous night. They could possibly give me a free ride to Vinales, but it depended on the kind of rental car they could get and how big it was. Mindful of wanting to catch the last bus to Vinales however, I could wait no more and I shared a taxi to ... read more

Cuba! The time had finally come. To be completely honest, during my last or three weeks in Central America, I was feeling pretty jaded about my experiences there – there was nothing that I saw that was especially exciting or that I hadn’t really seen before and my travels from Antigua onwards felt more like a means to an end…with the end being Cuba! Of my entire trip through Latin America, Cuba has been the place I have been looking forward to the most. A place of genuine difference and uniqueness – I wanted to see what likfe would have been like 50 years ago, by visiting a place that has hardly changed since. I’d never been to ‘communist’ country before so I wanted to see what it was like. It is the same reason that ... read more

As reported last time, I didn’t have the most ideal last night in Belize and when I awoke early to get the hell out of there, the aftermath of what was a crazy night was laid bare – literally – in the morning light. Used condom on the floor. A naked guy spooning a naked girl in one bunk. Another naked girl spread-eagled on her bed in another bunk. What the hell happened last night? Well, I don’t know about the naked people, but I knew what happened to me the previous night – bedbug bites, again, and lots of them. I didn’t feel them during the night this time, which was unusual (developing a tolerance, perhaps?) but during the course of the day, they all began to pop up at various times. FFS. Another blog entry, another country. Crossing the border from Guatemala in to Belize was a formality, although just a couple of days afterwards, the border was closed as long, ongoing territorial disputes flared up again between the two countries. Good timing for me then! Such is the ill-feeling between Guatemala and Belize, that some Guatemalan maps actually show Belize as part of Guatemala. Somewhat of an anomaly, Belize is the only country in Central America where Spanish is not the official language. This is because of the British pirates that used Belize as a safe haven during the 17th century and who then stayed on to dominate the territory’s logging industry. With Britain protecting the loggers’ interests on what was still Spanish territory, such became their domination that the local population were for all intents and ... read more

Picture the scene; you’re in the back of a pickup truck in a rural Guatemalan town in the middle of the jungle, only reachable by a rocky, bumpy dirt road. A local lady in traditional dress is loading the truck with her children and a big bag of maize, while a man is flogging ice cream loudly on the road right next to you. The ride to your destination is the definition of bone-chattering – you then realise why all the other passengers in the back of the pickup are standing up. Uncomfortable as you are, you just have to laugh and a smile is brought to your face It was another one of those moments when you realise and remember where you are – in the middle of f*cking Guatemala – and that the experience ... read more

If you’re a Kiwi, chances are that you’re having a chuckle at the title of this blog entry! Being woken up by bedbug bites (again!) at 5am isn’t the most ideal way to start the day. Then on the first of four chicken buses that I had to catch to Lago de Atitlan, I realised that I had left my favourite headphones back at the hostel. Having taken them for a swim on Roatan Island however, they weren’t quite working properly anyway and luckily I have a spare pair, even if they are just shitty regulation iPhone issue. But a bad day got worse when getting on the second chicken bus in Chmimaltenango. Getting off the first bus, a dude comes racing up to me asking where I am going. “Pana”, I tell him. He then ... read more

Some of you of a certain age may remember a film in the early 90s starring Tom Hanks (and Meg Ryan, of course) called Joe Verus The Volcano where Joe (Tom Hanks), a man who believes he is dying, agrees to jump into an erupting volcano. Well, I’m not dying and I don’t plan to jump into an erupting volcano…but I was willing to climb one. But I had to get there first. Mindful that I now had just under a month to get to Cancun with a whole lot of stuff to see in between, I’ve been moving quickly. Since I left Copan Ruinas, I had been travelling to a new place every single day and it has been exhausting. And once again I was only going to stay one night in my next destination; ... read more

I did have my reservations about going to El Salvador – in fact, I was originally going to skip it – much like I did with Honduras, mainly due to the murder rates of both countries. Things are always different once you get on the ground though and the more travel I had done in Central America and the more people I had met who had been there, the more convinced I was that there really wasn’t anything to worry about and that this small country was worth at least three days of my time. I took a shuttle directly to Santa Ana from my hostel in Copan Ruinas, which although was pricey, saved me from having to catch a series of chicken buses and a whole lot of time. Having managed to get an entire ... read more

Shared taxis – like literally shared with strangers – are the norm here in Honduras and it was in such a cab that I made my way from the hostel to the ferry terminal, realising what a beautiful place Roatan Island is along the way. The place is a Caribbean paradise and it’s no wonder that the place has become over-developed and over-commercialised. There really needs to be a balance in places like this – enough development to give the place decent infrastructure but not so much that any sort of original ambience is completely destroyed by cruise ship passengers and hotel resorts. Thankfully the ferry back to La Ceiba wasn’t anything like the rollercoaster ride over here and I even managed to get some sleep along the way. It was the second leg of a ... read more

From Granada, I took the short one-hour chicken bus ride to Nicaragua's capital - Managua. The place has a bit of a reputation for being dangerous and the stories I had heard about the place from other travellers I have met didn't really fill me with confidence either. It was however, a necessary stop as I needed to catch an international bus from here over the border to Honduras - there wasn't really anything else between here and Caribbean coast of Honduras that I was interested in seeing so I was making a beeline for the water and this was the quickest way to do it. Also, I had still to find the elusive replacement camera battery charger that I had lost somewhere in Costa Rica. It was now approaching three weeks without the use of ... read more
