I finally closed the London chapter of my life with a flight out on the 30th December 2014 - and started a new chapter and in fact a new year, in Auckland, New Zealand. I hardly had time to tie everything off in London before leaving so I thought that before I start my gallivant around the world for a couple of years, it was about high time I came back home not only to prepare, but also to see my neglected family. Going from the darkness and freezing cold of London to the brightness (literal brightness - you seem to need to wear sunnies at all times in NZ) and heat of the New Zealand summer took some adjusting, but once I had done that it was great to catch up with family and friends, ... read more

I still remember the day I arrived in London seven years ago, disembarking the Eurostar when it still terminated at Waterloo. I was tired and was looking forward to staying put for awhile, which was exactly what I did with my cousin Nicola and her boyfriend (now husband) at their flat in Kilburn Park, on their couch while I went about setting myself up with work and a place of my own - buckling myself in for the ride that would be life in London. I was always going to stay awhile - at least the six years it would take to get a British passport - before seeing what I wanted to do next. As you can imagine, waiting those years for my passport was anything but akin to a prison sentence - I enjoyed ... read more

The city of Glasgow has brought us many things; famous actors and TV personalities such as Ewan McGregor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, James McAvoy and Gordon Ramsay; famous musicians and bands such as Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand, Mark Knopfler, Travis and er, Wet Wet Wet; the 2014 Commonwealth Games; and an outstanding contribution to football which includes Celtic and Rangers football clubs, Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Jock Stein and er, David Moyes. Having gifted the world with such cultural and sporting prowess as well as being the biggest city in Scotland - a city famous for its urban, industrial grit, in contrast to the beautiful, peaceful nature of the Highlands - Glasgow demanded a visit. Back in Edinburgh, my tour of the Highlands had come to an end and the group and I were ... read more

It's fair to say that I have done my fair share of travel while living in London - yet unlike a lot of my friends, I had never managed to see Scotland properly despite its close proximity. Therefore by the time I had got around to it, everyone had already been there, done that. Famed for its rugged yet beautiful landscapes, to see Scotland's best bits isn't easy either - it is definitely road-trip material and while I'm sure it would be a nice solo drive, I thought it'd be a bit more fun with some company. So the solution to this was a budget bus tour, despite my tender age. I had a great experience doing this last year in Ireland so there was no reason that the same couldn't happen this time around. Rather ... read more

I was excited to be travelling again after so long - five months to be precise, which for one reputed for travelling so much, is an eternity. Three blog entries in eleven months reflects the year I have had travel-wise; the job I got back in February was initially a contracting position which meant no paid holidays, so travel was kept to a minimum - but the reason I was saving money is because at the end of the year my chapter in London is finally coming to an end. The end was supposed to happen in the summer, but I needed more money because from the start of 2015, I don't plan to work for two-and-a-half years. Yep, you read that correctly. More details will be divulged in due course. Having lived in the UK ... read more

The shuttle ride to Tel Aviv was over before I knew it, such was my exhaustion. To this extent I almost fell asleep on the Orthodox Jewish chap next to me. That might not have gone down well. Our first impressions of Tel Aviv weren’t great – we were dropped off at a decidedly dodgy looking bus station in a decidedly ropey looking area, while having to work out between us which bus to catch, where to catch it from, and in which direction, all while the type of creepy men who hang out at dodgy bus stations were eyeing up Anna’s blonde hair and blue eyes. The bus driver seemed particularly interested in Anna as well, being extra friendly and helpful in telling us were to get off. Also helpful and friendly was the lovely ... read more

I'm back. It has sure been awhile - five months to be precise, and the second-longest travel hiatus I've had since starting the blog - so before we get started, a brief life update is in order. The last time I wrote, I was unemployed in the middle of winter. I managed to find a job one month later working for an events company where I work on loads of spreadsheets and not a lot else. I didn't have much idea of what my plan was at the time; where I was going to go, what I was going to do, and indeed how much longer I was going to be in London. On top of trying to settle into my new job, this made it difficult to plan any trips. Three months went past during ... read more

For most people, a long stopover at an airport en route to your final destination elicits a long groan, followed by a grudgingly accepting sigh. I however, see stopovers as opportunities, and my brief adventures in Singapore, Segovia, and Seoul, show that one can make the most of a stopover by filling it with exploration and experience. This time I had the best part of five hours to kill in Düsseldorf en route to Berlin, and about three hours on the way back from Berlin to London. While my other stopovers were well-planned in advance, I actually hadn't even entertained the thought of doing anything this time around. I knew that I had a long-ish connection but had kind of forgotten all about it until I was on... read more

It was pretty quiet inside the van. Those that hadn't nodded off were admiring the beautiful and varied landscape of the Connemara with its bogs, brown hills, lush mountains and picturesque lakes. Barry was still driving us, but it was a different Barry (Bazza Mk II); it was still the same crew from the original Paddywagon tour, but a different group, minus Vanessa, Sean, Christine, Chandra and Jamie, who had followed Barry Mk I up to Northern Ireland. Same same but different. Barry Mk II was a good laugh though and kept us informed and entertained when we were awake. Snaking our way through the narrow, winding, country roads, he comments that at 100km/h, the speed limits on these roads were simply ridiculous given all the blind corners and hairpin turns we were navigating. He wasn't ... read more

First of all, some life developments. Remember how I said I was moving to Amsterdam? Yeah well, that isn't happening any more. In fact, I now don't even have a job - I'm currently a man of leisure! How it all happened is a long story but I'm appreciating the break from working life which was probably what I needed. What it all means is that major travelling plans are afoot. What exactly they are, I will keep to myself for now until they are more concrete - one thing for certain is that they are not likely to take place until the middle of next year while I wait for my British citizenship to be granted. I've waited six years for it so I am not about to give it up now. Whether I was ... read more
