I was pretty blase about eating the food in Vietnam. Strange really as anyone who knows me will know i'm constantly thinking about how my stomach is affected by whatever i eat. And in india i managed to get ill about once every week. But Asia has been a different story. Eating in cheap roadside cafes and sandwhiches from street vendors. All was well, until Dalat. Then shiiiiiiiit. Pretty much all over the place. Lovely I know, but i feel i must share. Oh, but wait, there was the 10 hour bus journey of doom. and then arriving and Dalat (sleepy honeymoon city) at midnight when all the hotels were shut. Then we were pounced upon (not literally!) by a drunk Easy Rider (tour company) driver, who wanted us to be his friends and not worry ... read more

Our bus journey to Ho Chi Minh was pretty uneventful. The guide man asked for our passports at the start of the trip, which we were a bit apprehensive about, but it worked out alright. Arrived in HCMC in the afternoon and were immediately taken to a hestel, which was nice and realy cheap for HCM but we wanted to have a look at one we'd seen on the net. It was a bit more expensive, but we went for it anyways as it has free breakky and net access! woop woop. The Kate and Nicola arrived in the evenin and we went for a rubbish/expensive meal down the road, then went to bed. The following day we'd decided to wander round the city, and we have all decided that HCM is a wicked city. Crossing ... read more

Our last night in Sihanoukville was pretty chilled. We'd wanted a party but the police made the clubs turn their music off pretty early so it wasn't happening. We did have an awesome mixed seafood BBQ with baked potato for dinner, which as said was amazing! As we left our hotel room in Sihanoukville the next morning, it started weeing down with rain, and the hotel staff had to rescue us from our part of the hotel and shelter us from the rain with a massive parasole! We then had an amazing full english breakfast, yum. We got the bus, which was smaller than we expected, from our hotel to Phnom Penh and then had a look round a few hostels on the lakeside area. We settled in our favourite of the lot, #11 Happy Guesthouse/Simon's ... read more

So we made it here alive on the overnight bus from Siem Reap. Kev and I managed to get the worst seats - above the toilet, with the least legroom AND I had a cup holder where my knee should have fit. As you can tell we really enjoyed the trip ;) we ended up spending the majority of our first day here, in bed, napping! whoops. So we ended up checking in to a cheap hotel instead of a hostel because it wasnt tooo much more and had decent rooms rather than hot damp huts. We then spent hours discussing what we would do with our full day here, and ended up booking on to a snorkeling trip to some of the islands nearby. We then had a free meal and cheap drinks at the ... read more

Kev and I have decided we like Siem Reap. We've been here a few days now and despite it being a tourist trap for the local temples, and therefore full of people offering you their services and wares, its actually a pretty nice place. We left Bangkok on Tuesday morning, got our bus ok, although in hindsight, not early enough. We'd booked on to the 11am bus to the border, despite being told most people have an early start. The trouble is, the books didn't mention that this is because there are no buses in the afternoon from Poipet on the Cambodian side, to Siem Reap...or in fact anywhere. So having been charged over the odds for our Cambodian Visa, despite thinking we were on the look out for major scams, we then got over the ... read more

Finally, after much anticipation, I have arrived in Thailand. And quite frankly i'm having an amasing time - yeah the s is in place of the letter on this keyboard which doesnt work). I was very late getting in to bangkok on friday night as my plane was delayed. But stayed at a really nice hostel pretty close to the airport so that was ok. Met up with Kev fine the next day and we both headed in to the city centre together. The hostel we'd picked wasn't as close to the action as we had hoped it would be, but it is fine and the walking is good for us (or so i've told myself!) We went to see Koh San Road, the main tourist spot here...and i'm definitely glad i'm not stayign right there ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India June 11th 2009

Ok, so it's not really a return, but it is kind of India, at least that's what I thought when I arrived from Oz on Tuesday evening. The sounds, the smells, the people, the heat, the nearly getting run over! Yeah, it felt like I was back in India, and I hadnt really prepared myself for that kind of feeling. Being tired and hungry didn't really help either. I wandered around by myself in search of dinner, and thought to myself, what am I doing here. But after some sleep, and free breakfast the next day, I was more open to the challenges I would soon be facing. I got up, went for a look around, and realised that actually Singapore isn't really much like India at all. It's clean, and tidy, has a decent road ... read more

What have I been up to the last few days? Well I arrived back in Airlie and it was nice to see some old friends there again, and just chill by the lagoon for a bit. I think I have been tired ever since the whitsundays, I'm not really sure why, I think perhaps all the sunbathing, topping up my still non existant tan, took a lot of energy out of me! But yeah, not much to tell about there. Airlie is an ok place, but not for hanging out for extended periods. We then left for Townsville/Magnetic Island. Maggie Island is a nice lil place, with lovely beaches and some nice walks. I decided to do 'the forts' walk, which is where you're almost guaranteed to see Koalas. It was a lovely lil wander around ... read more

Well I've finally gotten round to thinking about updating my blog. The trouble is, I'm so knackered I'm pretty sure none of it will make sense. Not that I make too much sense most of the time, but i'll give it a go. Hervey Bay was my place of departure to Fraser Island - The world's biggest sand island. I had booked with Koalas (as i've mentioned before) and surprise surprise, the hostel was a s**t hole. But seeing as I had one free night there I stuck it out. I had two nice Dutchies as roommates and we spent the evening watching Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. A good movie, but I preferred Snatch. We had our meeting for our fraser trip the following day. Two Essex girls walked in and demanded to know ... read more

From Brisbane I headed to Noosa. I had been told this was a nice place to hang out for a while. So had booked a couple of nights here, plus I got one free with my Koala Adventures Fraser Island/Whitsundays package. I wasn't as fond of Noosa as I was of Byron, it didn't have the same atmosphere, and this may've been because we were based a bit further from the beach, up a big hill. Oh and the fact that within three hours of arriving, my wallet (with drivers licence, yha card, credit/debit cards and some cash, English SIM Card - Don't try and use that number ever again!) was stolen. Grrr. It was bad times when my phone credit ran out and my other debit card was stopped due to expected fraud, it was ... read more
