There's no easy way to fly half way around the world. When booking our ticket from Bangkok back to Los Angeles, we had two options: Option A: Leave Bangkok in the middle of the night but arrive at LA at the perfect time of 11am. Option B: Leave Bangkok at a totally perfect time, but arrive in LA around midnight. Neither option was appealing. If we took option B, Scott's dad wouldn't be able to pick us up so we'd have to rent a car at the airport and wrestle two unfamiliar car seats into place in the middle of the night. If we took option A, Scotts dad would be able to pick us up, with two car seats already in place, but we'd be dragging the kids out of bed at 2:30am, effectively setting ... read more

Bangkok: people either love it or hate it. In our old days of travel, we used to hub in and out of Bangkok all the time so we really got to know and love our little area of the city, the legendary Khao San Road, backpacker paradise. Since Air Asia took over the SE Asia travel scene, however, we have been going more to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as this is Air Asia's hub, but it still just doesn't hold the same appeal as Bangkok. This was the first time we'd been to Bangkok in maybe ten years, and it felt like coming home. We went to stay at Rambuttri Village Inn. Back in the day, this used to be a real treat, with air-conditioning and hot water (which we never used to get) and even a ... read more

For our final three weeks in Indonesia, we'd decided to stay on the Gili Islands off Lombok. We'd visited this set of three tiny islands twelve years earlier when we got married in Bali. At that time we'd chosen Gili Trawangan as our base but we'd heard it was now a bit too much of a crazy party. The next island along, Gili Meno, was still supposedly very quiet and under-developed, so this time we chose Gili Air as a happy medium. It took several days for us to settle in and make Gili Air feel like home. Partly, our timing didn't help. We arrived on the island on a no-moon, when tidal swings are the greatest. The high tide happened to fall during the middle of the day, meaning that there was very little beach. ... read more

Thanks to Indonesia only giving a 30 day visa on arrival, and the fact that it's so difficult to renew, we decided the easiest way to deal with it was to fly out of the country for a couple of nights and then fly right back in to receive another 30 day stamp. The alternative would have been to spend three half days at the immigration office, going through the motions to extend it. Not fun, especially with little kids in tow. The cheapest flight we could find was with Air Asia (of course!) to Kuala Lumpur. It was time to go explore our first big city of the trip! Despite the multiple days of travel, we tried to squeeze in as many fun activities for the kids as possible. Here's our last few days... Day ... read more

In the end we had only four full days on the island of Nusa Lembongan instead of the two weeks we'd planned. As soon as we arrived, though, it instantly felt so good to be away from the hustle and bustle and general commercialism that is mainland Bali. Mind you, a lot had changed on Nusa Lembongan in the twelve years since we were last there. It has really gone upscale, which in turn has caused the previously dirt roads to be paved. The downside of this is that the once sleepy island, where you could barely find a truck to get around, has become full of trucks and motorbikes zooming around the narrow streets. On the plus side, it's easy to get a ride to anywhere you want to go around the island. On our ... read more

In my last blog I described getting off the island of Nusa Lembongan just to be close to medical care if Kyla's fever spiked. Each morning it would be close to normal, lulling us into thinking she was almost better, but by late afternoon it would come back. Tired of playing the waiting game, we told ourselves that we'd take her to a doctor in the morning, whether she had a fever or not. Next morning rolled around and she had no fever. We were torn. It's hard to take a kid to see the doctor when they seem fine, but chances are her fever would reappear in the afternoon again, when it was too late to face battling traffic to get to the hospital. In the end we decided to get a driver for the ... read more

Having to stay inside your own home with two sick kids for days on end = pure misery Having to stay inside a hotel room with two sick kids for days on end = cruel and unusual torture (for everyone involved!) Exactly a week ago tonight, Jake woke up in the middle of the night with a fever. Since then, it's safe to say that things have gone from bad to worse. The next morning was when we checked into the fancy "flashpacker" hotel in Sanur that I talked about in my last blog. After a couple of days of luxury, Jake was on the mend and we headed off to Nusa Lembongan, as island just a 30-minute speed boat ride away. Upon arriving at our accommodation, we soon realized that we were having our first ... read more

I've talked about flashpacking in previous blogs, meaning that you travel around with a backpack pretending to be a proper backpacker, but you actually sneakily stay in pretty nice places, not roughing it at all. In my heart, I'm a backpacker and not a flashpacker. I really dislike big commercial hotels, instead preferring smaller locally owned places. With little kids in tow, it's sometimes easier to give in to flashpacker-dom, and other times it just happens because of a dumb (and expensive) mistake. I'm going to tell you about two back-to-back flashpacker experiences we had recently. Flashpacking in Tulamben Tulamben is a teeny town on the east coast of Bali that seems to survive mostly on the dive industry. This is mostly thanks to the USAT Liberty, a US cargo ship that was sunk by the ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud May 3rd 2017

We'd never actually spent a night in Ubud on prior trips, choosing to just make a day trip instead. It has been nice this trip to really slow things down. As Jake still had a nasty mystery rash on his hands and feet, we decided that staying away from the beach and constant water might be just what the doctor ordered. We spent five nights in total. For the first couple of days, we'd do only one or two "sights" and then take the rest of the day off to chill out. The taxi drivers we hired found it quite puzzling. Why didn't we want to buzz from place to place, cramming as much into our day as possible and recording it all on our selfie sticks?! There's an easy answer to that: when you are ... read more

We decided to start our month in Bali by taking a trip down memory lane. We headed straight to Sanur, the beach town we'd got married in 12 years prior. Our plane landed at about 7pm and by the time we'd cleared immigration, it was way past the kids' bedtime. As the taxi from the airport negotiated the bustling streets in the dark, the kids were excited to see all of the cool statues and temples along the way. We'd forgotten just how frequently you came across them. At each one, Kyla claimed to have built it the night before while we were all sleeping! We checked into our pre-booked hotel and headed out to look for food. Thank goodness the kids had napped on the flight or we'd just be going to bed on left-over ... read more
