Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay April 25th 2017

For our last two nights in Thailand we decided to stay in the town of Ao Nang. It's a big busy place with a fast road running through it. Not our style at all but it's close to Krabi airport, and we had an 8am flight. We thought it might be nice to do a day trip to Railay Beach, only accessible by boat due to the imposing landscape surrounding it. We'd been there ten years ago and had so many fond memories of it. Railay is the place you see on all of the brochures and ads for Thailand. It's a land of powdery white sand beaches, long tail boats adorned with colorful flowers and ribbons, and those impossibly steep limestone cliffs which make you reach for your camera every few minutes. Well, as you've ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta April 24th 2017

The lure of Ko Lanta was too much for us. Despite already having spent two months here around Christmas, we decided to come back for another month. One reason is that it's such an easy-going kid-friendly island. Another was the fact that we knew it had access to fast wifi and cheap phone calls. After spending two months in the Philippines where none of this works, we had a huge "to do" list built up in terms of flights and accommodation to be booked. We also had to call Bank of America AGAIN to sort out yet another screw up. We'd planned to go back to stay at Best House again but arrived to find it being packed up and closed down for the end of the high season. Luckily, we landed a bargain at Arrow ... read more

When setting out on this big trip, I think a lot of people assumed that diseases such as malaria were our biggest risk factor. While diseases and access to decent medical care are a concern, I think our biggest risk factor is road accidents. At home, Kyla and Jakey have the latest and greatest child safety seats complete with safe cell technology etc etc. Here in the third world, however, things are very different. We are in countries where families of two adults and up to three kids travel on a single motorbike, where people ride on the roof of buses, and where people hang off the edge of speeding trains. If you asked for a child car seat I'm pretty sure they'd look at you as if you'd just stepped off the moon! In the ... read more

White Sands and Cave Pools Leaving the beautiful Polaris Dive Resort and arriving at DapDap Resort in Anda brought us crashing back into reality. At half the price, we were not expecting much, but the contrast was stark. A bumpy 700m driveway took us down to DapDap, recommended in our guide book. It looked a little run down but we went ahead and took a look at a room. It was the old thatched style but had four beds and looked passable. It was easier to just take it for the night and reconsider in the morning. We went down to see the beach. It was a small, pretty bay but it was hard to get into the water due to rocks that came right up almost to the high tide mark. Useless for swimming! We ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Cabilao Island March 16th 2017

Cabalao island is somewhere we'd read about the last time we were in The Philippines but had never been to. The only places to stay are dive resorts, which tend to be quite pricey, and as there are only a few options, you need to book ahead, never our forte in the past. This time we are spending much more on accommodation as we are getting air conditioning, and we are pre-booking a lot more. Hence, it made sense to try Cabilao this time around. Primarily a dive island, Cabilao is not known for its beaches so we definitely wanted to book a place with a pool. As we got off the boat and walked onto Polaris Dive Resort, I anxiously looked around for their pool. Given our recent luck with pools, I was half expecting ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Tagbilaran March 1st 2017

The Philippines is a land of islands, 7107 of them to be exact! After spending a month on just one of the bigger ones, Palawan, it was time to spread our wings and explore some new islands. Two short flights later we were arriving on Bohol for what I consider The Philippines Part II. We left the tiny Tagbilaran airport and found a tricycle, Kyla and Jake watching with interest as the driver tied on our luggage. By this point in the trip I'd been determined to ditch one piece of luggage, but it wasn't happening. In the past we've always traveled with just a big backpack on our backs and a small one on our fronts. This trip we've been using the exact same backpacks but we have also added a huge wheelie suitcase into ... read more

Bad bugs = sand flies. These tiny little evil black dots can barely be seen but they suck your blood and leave itchy welts. We read that the female can burrow under your skin and lay its eggs. Lovely! Good bugs = fireflies. These little flying bugs don't bite or sting. They hang out after dark, lighting up the trees like Christmas lights. We ran into both kinds within a day of each other. We booked two nights at the Astoria hotel, four hours South along the coast from El Nido. At $100 a night, it was by far the fanciest place we'd stayed on the entire trip, but we just did it for the kids as a special treat. They couldn't care less about an expensive hotel room (and frankly neither could I) but the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido February 25th 2017

It's almost time to leave El Nido after being here for about a month. Tom left for Puerto Princesa yesterday and we'll be doing the same in a couple of days. I've written blogs about all of the famous boat trips, but here's all the other little things I've been wanting to write about... The Simple Life We spent most of our time staying at Morning Walsh resort on Corong Corong beach, known locally simply as "Green House." We had the luxuries of air conditioning and a hot water shower, so it wasn't a simple life in that way. However, now that we'd moved away from the hustle and bustle of El Nido town, the sound of tricycle horns and revving engines was replaced by the cock-a-doodle-doing of roosters. The kids could roam around the amazing ... read more

I already wrote a blog about Tour A. Over the course of a few weeks, we did the other three boat tours. Here's the scoop... Tour B - Caves We did this trip with Saldi as our guide again (although Tom called him Salty!) but this time it wasn't a private tour. We had a Spanish couple on board too. They seemed nice but couldn't speak a lot of English. At least Scott got to practice his Spanish! The first stop was snorkeling from the boat. Somehow we'd not gotten around to having the kids practice, so now was the time! Jake flatly refused to put his goggles on but Kyla tried it, holding her breath for a second or two to look under the water. She loved it, and kept popping her head up and ... read more

Picture in your mind a perfect beach of white soft sand, swaying coconut palms and backed by the most amazingly steep cliffs jutting right up to the sky. Add to this a keyhole gap in the rock, leading into a huge lagoon surrounded by those same steep jagged cliffs. You've now got an idea of what the islands around the Bacuit archipelago look like. We'd been in El Nido almost a week when we were finally all healthy enough to head out on one of the famous boat tours. There are four tours to choose from, imaginatively named Tours A, B, C, and D. We started with tour A, dubbed the "lagoons" trip. Everywhere you go in town, there's a travel agent or guesthouse trying to sell you a tour, but most look pretty awful, cramming ... read more
