We find ourselves with 3 spare days which is always handy so moving to plan D. We always start with a plan, helps with making sure we are not doing too much driving and to give a shape to our route but we have cut a couple of places a day short and missed out an alpine stop so have days to spare and in such a lovely area too. Happy about that. . A quick check on the map showed that just north of the Dordogne would be an excellent place to head for, Brantome to be specific so that is what we did. Had to leave our site anyway as the workmen were building chalets around us and we had to ask them to move their van and piles of wood so we could ... read more

First stop today was our nearest town, Villereal, just 4km away. Another Bastide town and also another Plus Beaux Villages de France. As it turned out, though it has the most superb market place, the pretty bit really seems to be confined just to that central area so we didn’t find it as lovely as the other villages we visited. Villereal does have the most fantastic covered market, it even has steps up to an inside area under a peaked roof and was a real delight to visit. We did get a little wet as it decided to rain when we were there. We were enjoying a coffee, under cover and felt so sorry for the market traders who as well as getting themselves and their stalls wet, suddenly lost all their customers who ran for ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Castillonnes June 20th 2023

First stop was Castillones. We chose this village as it had a market . Up a little hill, a handy parking spot (we don’t need a big spot, Smart Arse is tiny) and we came to a lovely market square. Cannot get over just how superb the medieval buildings in villages like these are. I know they have been much restored and that a hundred years ago the places undoubtedly looked like pretty filthy slums but now they are a delight to see. The main buildings have a religious background, built for the abbots, the ones with the money. Such interesting structures and the camera can’t get enough of their nooks and crannies and ancient doorways and steps with big dents made by thousands of feet over the centuries. The market was in the main square ... read more

A wet start as we had been kept awake for a while by thunder and lightening. There is a lot about at the moment across a lot of France and the UK but it is still very pleasantly warm. We had taken the awning down and everything in, because of the rain, the night before so an easy departure with not much to do to get ready. The drive was only 80 miles and across lovely countryside, a few hills and lots of straight roads and fields full of crops as far as the eye can see. I had glimpses of pretty Dordogne coloured buildings as we went along and started to see the sunflowers and nut trees the region is so famous for. Our destination was Camping Le Chateau de Fonrives just outside Villeréal, a ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Figeac June 18th 2023

Today we drove down to the town of Figeac in the car for a visit. Lovely place indeed, just filled with gorgeous old buildings. Being a Sunday is a was nice and sleepy with not too many other tourists walking around. We stopped for a coffee and later decided to buy little quiches at a boulangerie but were then stuck to find anywhere to sit to eat them and we needed a drink anyway. We settled at a cafe table under the market hall in the central square and drank our drinks while secretly eating our quiche when the waitress wasn’t looking. We weren’t being mean in not eating the café’s food, we had just fancied the quiche. The waitress was a bit drippy anyway (said they didn’t have jus d’abricot but when I asked what ... read more

Our wedding anniversary today. 28 years. I think we have been on holiday for at least 25 of the anniversaries 😊 which makes celebrating easy. Today we were heading for a campsite with a restaurant so Bob suggested we would eat there for dinner but I had been checking the reviews which reported the campsite restaurant was only open July and August so that snookered that idea. Another hot day and a little alarmingly when I was reading about the campsite the pool appeared to be closed on Saturday. Not 100% sure about that as the campsite in French said Samedi but the English version said Sunday which is tomorrow. Inexplicable that it could be closed any day at the weekend but it seemed likely that it would be one day or the other. We had ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Aigues-Mortes June 16th 2023

It’s been a while since we’ve visited this part of the Camargue. I brought my daughters here in 1990, driving all the way in 2 days with them in my Astra GTE and we stayed in a Eurocamp caravan at Port Camargue. I can remember walking into Aigues-Mortes and my eldest telling me to put the camera away as I looked like a tourist 😊 That’s where we headed today. Extremely hot and indeed full of tourists when we got there. The first 3 carparks said they were full, though annoyingly as we drove past we saw several empty spots. Managed to find a space in the car park at the end of the city walls and walked in through one of the gates. The walls are so impressive, completely surrounding the town inside. Outside there ... read more

Headed down to Stes Maries de la Mer where we have stayed a couple of times before but not recently. Heaving with people and the main access road was closed off for some ‘happening’. Decided not to even attempt to park in the centre and went along to the beach road instead. Far too hot to walk about for any distance, think it is an age thing but we are both struggling a little with the heat. It was exactly this time last year that we were melting in La Rochelle at 40°C++, though that was hotter than here now at only 34 °C. I really fancied going in the sea but it was so hot that the thought of that open sunny sandy beach was too hot really so we went into a beach edge ... read more

Though it was a driving day we didn’t exactly rush as we only had an hour’s drive to the next campsite and sometimes you are not allowed on until after lunch. We have found, an easier way to attach the car when we leave is for Bob to take the motorhome to the service point to unload, load water while I drive the car separately and then find a handy bit of road to hook the Aframe to the car and then to the ball hitch of the motorhome. Worked beautifully again as far easier to negotiate the separate vehicles off a pitch then try to do it with the car already attached especially as we can’t reverse once it is there. An easy drive heading South west to the edge of the Camargue. This area ... read more

13/6//23 l’isle sur la sorgue Woken in the middle of the night by a massive crack of thunder which was followed by heavy rain. And when you are sleeping in a motorhome you hear all the drops as they land on the roof I can promise you. Must have soothed us to sleep again as it was a bit later than normal when we woke. Had decided that lovely though Avignon is we didn’t want to do another city day, especially after getting a bit overheated yesterday. So we set out for L'isle sur la Sorgue, a pretty town about 20 miles due East. The traffic getting across Avignon is pretty horrendous but we made it safely out the other side and once clear of the city had a pleasant drive. We have been to L’isle ... read more
