Woken by rain on the roof and in a motorhome that is not a noise which you can ignore as it tends to be pretty loud. A few claps of thunder and a check of the weather forecast said it wouldn't last long and it didn't. We set off in the Smart car for Zurich once it had dried up. The roads are pretty fantastic but we took the motorway most of the way as easier to find the way into a city and the motorways do tend to dominate. Lots of tunnels later and we were approaching the centre and the lake. Searched for car park signs and followed them to one but when we got there it said it was full. Round the block slowly as half the road was closed off where they ... read more

I've located this in Zurich but out campsite is a good 20 km from Zurich, at Ottenbach on the river Reuss, but the blog functionality won't let me locate myself there ! Woke to another stunning blue sky day so packed everything up and drove Smart car and motorhome separately to the motorhome service point so we could empty grey waste, fill with clean water and then hitch Smart Arse onto the back of the motorhome. Easy Peasy and we were off. Bob had chosen a route which was a little let windy and hair-pinned than when we drove over the mountains 2 days ago. It did though involve going via Gerardmer especially as needed fuel. Gerardmer was a nightmare again. Still heaving with people and lots of roads still blocked off. We had to do ... read more

A glorious blue sky greeted us this morning. Not sure how long this lovely weather can hold out as there are reports of quite a lot of rain about but will make the most of what we have. Got on our way a little earlier as the triathlon cyclists were clearing the road outside the campsite by 10am. We headed for the Langemer lake just up the road and found a handy parking spot so we could wander to the water's edge. The local guide book makes reference to walking round the lakes but in most places it seems that the walks around the lake go along the road so not sure I would want to do that. At either end of the lake though there are big parking areas and lots of people splashing in ... read more

220904 Visiting some pretty Alsace villages Having been told last night by lady in reception that nobody could leave the campsite between 8.15 and 14.00 we were not really expecting to do a lot today. But we checked Google maps which shows a road to the left as we go out of the campsite which is not included in the roads closed off for the cycle part of the triathlon. I asked again at reception, different lady this time and she said yes we Can get out that way, just may have to wait a little where we meet the traffic controls. So Smart Car raring to go now its battery is fully charged we were off. Left the triathlon cyclists to their ride around the mountains and went in the opposite direction winding out way ... read more

Another mostly driving day today so not a lot to report and not many pretty photos to show you. Accidentally set off an hour later than planned after oversleeping. The motorhome drop down bed is really comfy ! Delighted to find that Smart Car battery had fully recharged overnight so drove it back into position behind the motorhome and hooked them back together with the Aframe. Bob has worked out a solution to the Smart Car deciding to secretly switch and leave its brake lights on if we leave it hooked up when we stop. He has to stop the motorhome and then move it forward just a couple of inches. This stops Smart car trying to snuggle up a bit closer which switches the lights on! Back on the A26 toll road but not for ... read more

Up and away by 7.45 heading for the 9.30 Irish Ferry from Dover. No problems at all. Passport stamped by the French, waved through by the British. Nobody looked even inside the motorhome, never mind checked if the gas was off, if we were carrying anything we shouldn’t. Managed to get a lane number this time so headed through the docks and we were only in the queue for a few minutes before driving up the ramp. Right at the back of the ferry so we could just keep an eye on it from the viewing deck above. We decided not to have a drink on board as the catering costs really are extortionate. Was almost charged £2.50 for a kitkat last time (I say almost as I handed it back !) so we knew better ... read more

And we are off. Off to Switzerland, via France for a few days, for most of September. We’ve been pretty well occupied throughout July and August since our June trip to France. The garden has been looking absolutely splendid, helped by a lot of glorious weather and no battering of heavy wind and rain. The almost drought conditions of August have left it a bit dry in places but we have had no hosepipe ban and in fact have had some rain where lots of England has not. Gentle soft rain, the sort the flowers love. We’ve survived the British Heatwave which was supposedly going to kill tens of thousands as we’ve survived the Covid pandemic (so far at least and not surprising as we have both managed (touching wood) not to catch it 😊). I’ve ... read more

And so we came home. We left the campsite early enough to hopefully get the earlier ferry as we had on the way out.....ha ha sometimes things don't go the way we expect ? I'ts qute a few years since we have left France from Calais docks. We have most recently used the Chunnel or Dieppe to Newhaven. Calais has grown even bigger since our last visit. It has also acquired some slightly confusing directional signs.. if you are not accustomed to them. We were concentrating on the ferry we were to use Irish Ferries. Didn't want to accidentally get DFDS or heaven forbid P&O. So we followed the signs to our type of ferry. We should have followed the much smalller vehicle signage but hindsight is wonderful isn't it ? So we found ourselves in ... read more

It struck me as I was belatedly sorting out the last photos from the trip that the text I put into the blog for the drive up to Laon two days ago should actually be in this one. Never mind. Not going to change it now because if I do and republish it will send everyone another message and I don't want that. ? Anyway we drove from Laon up to the north, near enough to Calais to catch the ferry in the morning. Stopped at a supermarket and had a nice shop choosing all of my favourite foods. Only regret is failing to find any Fallot Nut mustard which is a little bit specialised. Have bought it online in the last couple of years but postage to the UK is now so expensive I can't ... read more

What an absolutely super town, or city really as Laon has a cathedral. To make our day even better the sun was back in full and we had a glorious blue sky all day long. Fantastic. Smart Arse was more than happy to take us up the very steep hill into town which is built on a high ridge with views across the valley below in all directions. We found a car park on the edge of the ramparts which still almost surround the old city. It seems that parking in the city is free which was a pleasant surprise. The main street was festooned with multi-coloured balloons. It looked amazing. So much more impressive than the tradional bunting used in most places. I've seen photos which show that Laon in other years had a display ... read more
