Tonight's entry will probably be short. We are sitting in a VERY NOISY bar in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the only Wi-Fi connection in a medium sized town. Today brought two more "Firsts" for the trip. One, we had our first real headwinds. Though they were not bad, we did feel them as we climbed 65 kms. through the Oca Mountains. Second, we did not get lost at all. In fact, even leaving Burgos was a piece of cake. Of course, the fact that we were on N-120 the entire day was a help. We deliberately started out late this morning as it was quite cold last night. I slept in tights and a long sleeve shirt and socks. So this morning, we lingered in our sleeping bags until nearly 8:00, took nice hot showers, ... read more

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. For purple mountains majesties, above the fruited plains. I know -- the lyrics to the song belong to America, but the sentiment was certainly stirring through my brain yesterday as we cycled 105 kms. from Carrion de las Condes to here in Burgos. This area must be the “bread basket of Spain,” definitely not as flat as Kansas but growing enough grain to feed the populace. And beautiful windmills pirouetting against the blue skies!! Before I tell you about the day, let me tell you that we made our first “food mistake” last night. At a small grocery store, we had purchased the makings for dinner. Everything was fine until . . . dessert. I had gotten two little brown crocks of what I thought was ... read more

After spending the past week on the narrow, winding, mountainous backroads of Spain where we saw as few as two cars an hour, coming out of Leon was a bit of a wake up call this morning. For the first twenty kms or so we were in very heavy traffic, lots of trucks and, fortunately, a nice wide shoulder for us to bike on. After that, we found ourselves on a low traffic, fantastic road with a tailwind. But I'm sure that some of you are wondering how our worship and sleeping experiences went last night. First of all, the Vespers service was lovely, including biblical text relating Abraham's pilgrimage to our own. Of course, it was all in Spanish, but we got the gist of what the nuns were saying and singing as about 50 ... read more

Here we are in a convent with 123 other people (and a whole bunch of nuns), sleeping in bunk beds above a couple we’ve never met (and who probably don’t speak English). We arrived here in Leon at about 10:30 this morning, after a short ride over relatively flat land on a fairly busy road that provided a wide shoulder most of the way into the city. A stop at the Officina de Turisma revealed that there was an albergue just a few minutes walk from the center of town. It opened at 11 a.m.. When we arrived at 10:45, there were 40-50 perigrinos lined up, waiting to enter. We added our bikes to the line and were checked in by 11:45 or so. The albergue is run by the convent and a number of volunteers. ... read more

I thought about calling this Blog entry "From Hospital" but was afraid that you would all fear the worst. Actually, tonight we are camping in Hospital de Orbigo, a small town that has one of the oldest bridges in Spain with 20 arches stretching over 200 meters. It's 5:14 p.m. We are sitting outside in the street, having just finished a delightful meal on a lovely Sunday evening. Bill celebrated Father's Day with a beer, which I am now drinking:) The ride today was notable for its climbing (yes, again) and its scenery. For the first 20 kms. we climbed through a number of very small villages (pueblos) with cobblestone streets and small beautfiul churches. I probably walked about 2 km of mountain (thus, the title of this blog entry) as it was way too steep ... read more

No Internet last night, none tonight. Maybe tomorrow?? Should I start with today or with yesterday? Guess I should keep things in chronological order, so I’ll start with yesterday, which began hard and ended easy; so easy, in fact, that we just kept going. We left Sarria probably at about 9 a.m.-- cloudy and a bit of a mist in the air. I know that you are all probably tired of hearing about the mountains, but, once more, we were in those mountains -- climbing, climbing, climbing.-- about 40 kilometers to the top, most of it marked as a 7% grade. At about the half way point, a sign indicated that the pass ahead, “The Gateway to the Mountains,” was Open, suggesting that it is often closed. We soon discovered why it is often closed -- ... read more

We are now official Pilgrims! In order to be an official "Pilgrim," a person must obtain "credentials," a sort of passport that one gets stamped in the cathedrals along the route. Because we are taking the route in reverse, we were not able to obtain the official credentials until this afternoon, when we talked with the friar at a monastery, received the official passport and got our first stamp (which, believe me, we had earned after traipsing up a very steep hill twice). Today began with our getting lost but taking advantage of the "lostness" to see Vilar de Donas, a Romanesque church in a VERY SMALL community about 3 km off route. Though it was not officially open yet, a local man, who spoke NO English, gave us a very thorough tour, explaining the symbolism ... read more

Santiago to Palais de Rais, about 70 kilometers. I know that there are days ahead of us when we will be cranky because we’re tired or hungry or lost or whatever. But today was a great “first day on the Pilgrimage Route,” a perfect introduction to the next 1500 kilometers, from Santiago de Compostela, on the far west coast of Spain, to Le Puy, in central France. In the eleventh century, over half a million people per year traversed, by foot, this arduous route-- some for personal reasons, most for religious reasons. Today, we can attest that the route continues to attract those pilgrims. Much of the ride today on nicely surfaced roads paralleled the actual Camino de Santiago, with its hundreds of pilgrims with their back packs, traipsing from village to village, stopping here and ... read more

I was hanged last night -- spent the entire night hanging from the ceiling, smashed between Bill's bunk and a window. The Tramp did not do any better; he, too, spent the night with his front wheel high in the air, bungy-corded to me. And no, it was not a romantic night for the two of us. Okay, this is Lady talking. Bill and Gerri are recuperating from a night of little sleep (as if I slept any better than they!). But here's the story; the whole truth and nothing but the truth . . . . We biked from Ken and David's place to the Chamartin Train Station. Not a particularly nice ride but not as harrowing as we feared in the rush hour of Madrid down a major road. Arrived at the station a ... read more

First of all, we want you all to know that we appreciate your e-mails and comments. It's great to hear from you!! Now, on to the blog . . . Adventure, adventure, adventure. Yesterday's new experience involved putting Lady and The Tramp on the train in Getafe (which stops for only a few minutes) and then getting them off in Madrid-Atocha, where the train again stops for just a few minutes, barely time to the get the bikes off. We figured the train would not be full as it was a Sunday evening, but such was not the case. It was packed with people with babies in strollers and old people with large suitcases and young people all dressed up for date night. And, of course, trying to keep the bikes from rolling or falling as ... read more
