Some sunny spells this morning but also a cold brisk headwind on the way home. Today we headed through Chatburn, Rimington, Gisburn, Bolton by Bowland, Sawley, Chatburn and Worston. Our virtual journey would be leaving Gallargues-le-Montueux and continuing on flattish roads. We stay to the south of the huge city of Montpellier but the roads are still busy with traffic. We see lots more Camargue horses and get our first sighting of the Mediterranean sea just after Lattes. We ride between lagoons and Mediterranean beaches and even have about 3km on a narrow isthmus ( a narrow strip of land with sea on either side). The Camargue horse is an ancient breed of horse indigenous to this area. It is generally considered one of the oldest breeds of horses in the world. For centuries, possibly thousands ... read more

Cooler and breezier today but it stayed dry. Our route was through Waddington, Bashall Barn, Cowark, Whitewell, Leagram, Chipping and to Little Town Dairy for a take away. ( Great to see other CBC members). Then home via Rock Brow and Chaigley. Our virtual journey would be leaving Saint Gervacy and continuing on tiny roads through vine-yards, orchards and occasional patches of reed covered marshes. It is very flat and hot. As always each vine-yard has a sign with its name on and many try to tempt you in for wine tasting. For many years our trips had to be in late July or August due to me teaching for a living. This almost always guaranteed good weather (except for August 2014 which was quite wet, but still warm) and as we moved further south , ... read more

Another lovely morning. Today we headed through Pendleton, Wiswell, Whalley, Langho, Dinkley, Gallows Lane, Hurst Grren and home. Our virtual journey would be once more on the ViaRhona heading south on the Rhone until we reach the beautiful city of Avignon. On route we pass the famous vine-yards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We stayed, the night, here in 2019 on our way to Nice. We are now in Provence. Châteauneuf-du-Pape literally translates to "The Pope's new castle" . In 1308, Pope Clement V relocated the papacy to Avignon. Clement V and subsequent "Avignon Popes" were said to be great lovers of Burgundy wines and did much to promote them during the 70-year Avignon Papacy. The ruins of the medieval castle can still be seen on the hillside overlooking the town. Avignon is also known as the city of ... read more

Another decent morning weatherwise. Our loop was through Chatburn to Sawley, Bolton by Bowland and round the radio mast anti-clockwise and home via Sawley and Chatburn. Our virtual journey would be leaving Pierrelatte, still on the ViaRhona, and staying close to the River Rhone. Soon after leaving... read more

Another decent morning with sunshine but cool heading into the breeze. Today's loop was through Waddington, Bashall Barn, Cowark, Middle Lee's, Leagram, Chipping and home via Chaigley and the Pigeries. Our virtual journey would be leaving Baix and again heading south along the banks of the Rhone to Pierrelatte. Pierrelatte seems to have two claims to fame: Firstly, since the 1980s it hosts one of the biggest production plants of the enriched uranium existing in the world, used both for civil and military purposes. Secondly, it has the "Ferme aux crocodiles". La Ferme aux crocodiles is a French zoological park mainly devoted to crocodilians. It consists of a tropical greenhouse of 8,000 m 2 and an outdoor course of 4,000 m 2 , where one can observe twelve of the twenty-three species of crocodilians recorded in ... read more

Another decent morning for cycling with a little sunshine and not too much wind. Our route was through Chatburn to Sawley and then round the radio mast, clockwise, back to Bolton by Bowland and home via Sawley and Chatburn. Our virtual journey would be leaving Valence on the Via Rhona which goes out through the port. On route we see castles perched high on rocky out crops. We pass hundreds of vine-yards and orchards growing every crop imaginable. We are now seeing olive trees too. Approaching lunch time we stopped at a bakers to buy a quiche to supplement lunch. The Baker said to just wait a few minutes. I waited about ten minutes and then was served with two quiches. We found a bench to eat them on but they were so hot, as they ... read more

Wow, this afternoon we had gorgeous sunshine and it was much less windy. Our route was Cow Ark, past Marl Hill, Newton, Dunsop Bridge, Whitewell and home via Cow Ark and Bashall Eaves. So a little hillier than some routes but lovely scenery. Our virtual journey would be leaving Roussillon and continuing on the ViaRhona southwards. This ViaRhôna stage alternates terraced vineyards and orchards. The Rhône is used to irrigate the land , with agricultural land alternating with arboriculture, market gardening and vine-yards . Tournon sur Rhone is a very busy picturesque tourist spot. It stands opposite the Tain-l'Hermitage vineyards and is overlooked by the outline of the imposing 10th, 15th and 16th century Castle. The bridge between Tournon sur Rhône and Tain l'Hermitage, built in 1849 by engineer Marc Seguin, was the first suspension bridge with ... read more

A much better day weatherwise. Much less wind and some sunny intervals. Today's loop was Chatburn, Rimington, Gisburn, Bolton by Bowland, Sawley, Chatburn and a loop of Salt Hill and Clitheroe. Great to see quite a few other cyclists, we know, out too. Our virtual journey would be leaving Vienne and continuing on the ViaRhona close to the Rhone. From Vienne we pass through terraced vineyards, including the prestigious Côte-Rôtie. The vineyards of the Côte-Rôtie are unique because of the steep slopes facing the river and their stone walls. The Syrah vines on its steep, southeast-facing slopes produce wines which are both powerful and elegant. Improvements in quality have led to increases in demand for the wines – a cycle which turned so consistently that Côte Rôtie wines are now some of France's most sought-after and ... read more
