A grey, but dry, morning that improved towards lunch time. To be fair we knew the forecast was much better for the afternoon but by cycling in the morning we know we have the rest of the day free. Today's ride was up to Bashall Eaves, Cow Ark, Middle Lees, Whitewell and St Hubert's Church at Dunsop Bridge. Turn round and almost back on the same route. St Hubert's church was my childhood church and I was baptized, made my first communion and was confirmed there. On our virtual ride it's another day of gentle rolling hills, through farm lands. Now we are beginning to see huge War Grave Cemeteries such as 'Solesmes British Cemetery'. Very strangely the first grave that we saw when we stopped was the grave of a cyclist. The First World War ... read more

Wow, what a difference a day makes. Much calmer today and very Spring like and great for cycling. We left Clitheroe via Chatburn, on to Bolton by Bowland, round the radio mast (with a little extra loop in) and back to B by B. Then it was back to Clitheroe with a loop of Salthill and town. Out virtual route was leaving Barry and continuing south across more rolling hills and farmland. Large fields of maize and wheat dominate with occasional other crops such as cabbage and pumpkins. Huge wind turbines are always to be seen on the horizon. We have now arrived in the Nord department of Northern France. Valenciennes was historically known for lace making but now the production of cars is the main industry. The Hindenburg Line ran through Valenciennes during World War ... read more

VERY breezy today and a little damp. To be honest I can cope with the wet much better than the wind. Today we went through Waddington to Bashal Town, round the TT circuit and out to Mitton, up to Micklehurst Farm, round Rabbit Lane to Bashal Eaves and home. (It was more about getting the miles in and staying on the bike!) Out virtual route was leaving Ronse across more rolling hills, spotting horses and farmland. At one stage the road suddenly stopped at a river and there was no bridge but a very small car ferry that was going backwards and forwards across the river with vehicles and passengers. Today we passed out of Belgium and over the border into France. On route we were struggling to find a Bakery, or Supermarket, to buy some ... read more

VERY breezy today but we stayed dry. Today we did a loop of the local villages, Mitton, Whalley, Wiswell, Pendleton, Worston, Downham, Chatburn, West Bradford, Waddington and Bashal Barn. I thought I was going to end up in a field with several strong cross winds! Out virtual route would be leaving Eeklo and heading south through the picturesque city of Gent to Ronse. Across gentle rolling hills and through lots of farmland with huge crop growing fields and lots of wind turbines. Also, past numerous stables with very fine looking horses. Ronse is a tiny textile town. The B&B we stayed in here was typical of many in this area with very narrow winding stairs which are not easy in cycling shoes and carrying panniers. Also, for some reason, we always seem to have a room ... read more

Rather breezy but quite a nice morning. It was much better than anticipated after last night's weather forecast. Today's loop was Chaburn, Rimmington, Gisburn, Bolton by Boland, Chatburn and a lap of Clitheroe. Out virtual route would be leaving the ferry after breakfast, round the outskirts of Zeebrugge and onto the Schipdonkkannal. This is a very wide, well maintained, tree lined path and obviously very flat. The path surface is in a much better condition than most of our roads here. The route swaps sides occasionally before we come off for the small town of. Eeklo. We are now in the Flemish province of East Flanders, which always appears quite affluent with well maintained gardens and many stables with well groomed horses. Eeklo has often been our lunch stop on our journeys.... read more

Another lovely Spring morning but a bit breezy at times. Today we headed to Chipping via Cow Ark and Doeford Bridge. In Chipping we turned left and out towards Longridge, turning up Rock Brow and through Chaigley before finishing with a lap round the top of the Bashal TT triangle. Out virtual route would be from Howden head SW down through Laxton, until reaching the Humber river at Blacktoft. Continue east close to the river on small roads and cycle paths into Hull and follow cycle path signs for the docks. We have cycled from Beverly, through Hull, to the Ferry Terminal several times and it's very easy to do with cycle paths going right the way through. Then it's a case of booking in and waiting with the motor bikes to board the ferry. After ... read more

After a very brief shower as we set off we had a lovely Spring morning. The countryside is bursting into life with snowdrops, trees are beginning to bud and there are lambs in the fields. Perfect. Today we passed through Hurst Green, down Gallows Lane, up past Marles Wood and Dinkley, through Whalley and round the top of the Bashal TT triangle. Out virtual route would be from Sherburn in Elmet travelling directly east, skirting Selby and to Howden. One more day to the ferry. This will get more interesting so stick with it!... read more

Well today was positively Spring like and a balmy 9°. The wind was much calmer and the sun shone. A great day for a bike ride. From Clitheroe we headed through Chatburn and Sawley and round the Radio mast anti clockwise. For those who cycle in the Clitheroe area this is a popular route. Then it was back on the same route with a lap of Clitheroe thrown in for good measure. There was still a little ice in places at the side of the road but this was much improved on recent days. Out virtual route would be from Yeadon head due to south to Calverley Bridge and get on the Leeds Liverpool canal. Follow the canal round through Leeds to the John Smeaton Viaduct . Cross the canal and head east through Garforth, across ... read more

In theory it was a few degrees warmer today and the wind the same as yesterday. In reality the wind seemed much stronger than yesterday and bitterly cold. Today's route was up to Browsholme Hall from Edisford, turn round and back down the other side of the Bashall TT triangle, through Mitton to Whalley and then back to Clitheroe Golf Club. Then along four lanes end and to Worston on the cycle path, across to Chatburn and back to Clitheroe via Salthill. Lovely to see so many people out walking, despite the cold, and a few other cyclists. There are still some nasty patches of ice on the road so still avoiding certain routes. Out virtual route would be from Laneshaw Bridge, across to Keighley , through Bingley to Bradford. Then to Saltaire before arriving at ... read more

So today was our day to set off to Hull to catch the ferry! We set off after an early lunch hoping this would be the warmest part of the day. It was, but it was still freezing and there was a very cold brisk south easterly wind. Our actual route was up to Four Lane Ends, along the old road to Clitheroe Golf Club, through Whalley and Billington to the Petre Arms and back to Whalley. Next it was through Mitton and round the Bashal TT triangle and back to Clitheroe. An added loop up to Chatburn and round Salthill brought us to 23 miles. This isn't a route we would usually do but the main aim was to stay on roads that have been gritted and avoid icy patches. If we were in a ... read more
