Preparations are underway for our 'virtual' ride. The route across France is made up from two routes we have done before, Zeebrugge to Carcassonne in 2011 and Atalantic to Mediterranean coast in 2008, although this trip will be the reverse to the direction travelled then. Also on these journeys we cycled 50 - 60 miles a day so we have put many more stops in. The route from Clitheroe to the ferry is fictional as we have usually driven to Hull for the ferry. With the route decided upon we will go back through notes we have on the rides and photos taken so we can add some information on the route covered. Also, we need to publicise our activities with the aim of gaining sponsorship for our chosen charity Mary's Meals. Mary's Meals provide substantial ... read more

We had set the alarm for a bit later, than usual, but were awake anyway. We had a very leisurely breakfast and there was plenty of choice. We then used the hotel computer to print off our boarding passes for the flight home. European key boards are very different to ours so this is not as straight forward as you might think. We had already managed to check in. We had a short walk outside for a bit of fresh air before going back to our room and sorting washing, doing puzzles etc. Late morning we walked across to the airport again as it was Terminal 2 we wanted not Terminal 1 where we had been last night. This was a good half hours walk. It would be much easier on Saturday if we knew exactly ... read more

Thursday 3rd October 53 miles Breakfast was excellent. The best we had had for ages with real fresh fruit salad , good quality granola, yoghurt and as much milky coffee as you could drink. (And 'yoghurts to go'). Heaven. We were a little earlier for breakfast as we knew it would be a longer day. Before leaving town we headed to the Boulangerie as we only needed bread for today's picnic, already having tuna, crisps and nuts in stock. The Boulangerie was closed! The guidebook had boasted about it staying open until the evening so perhaps the pay back was that it opened later in the morning. Fortunately, there was a tiny Casino supermarket. The best I could do for bread was a small sliced loaf, more than we wanted really but at one euro it ... read more

Wednesday 2nd October 41 miles There was a terrific storm during the night and it rained really hard. Best for us if it rains overnight but it does make you think how horrible it would be if you were in the middle of nowhere and got caught in that. Fortunately that has never happened. We went down for breakfast at half eight. For once we were dressed in cycling gear to save time, as we had wanted an earlier start. Usually we go down in ordinary clothes and put cycling gear on afterwards. Breakfast as expected was minimal with orange juice, a croissant each, dry baguette, butter, a tiny pot of jam and one coffee each. As soon as we were ready to set off we went back to the sandwich shop for a ham and ... read more

Tuesday 1st October. 10 miles Wow October already. You would never guess it from the cloudless blue skies and the warm temperatures. (In the esrly twenties). There was an excellent choice for breakfast and even 'yoghurts to go' which surprised me. The posher hotels usually put the yoghurt in glass dishes so you can't 'pinch' one. We had a little time in the room before setting off as we only had ten miles to go. We had wanted to go further and get the first two climbs done and stay at the Hotel de Canyon but it inconveniently closed for October and November. Bad timing. I had struggled to find any other accommodation much before our next night stop. Anyway it would give us half a rest day! We had a look round the village before ... read more

Monday 30th September 38 miles. Breakfast didn't have as much choice as I had expected but we had enough to eat. We were soon off on our travels and heading out of town. We stopped at the large Intermarche about a mile out of town for lunch goodies and yoghurt. Roughly the first ten miles were downhill, with just the odd incline. This brought us to Oraison and we stopped for yoghurt and nuts in the centre. We had stopped in Oraison many years ago when we cycled down part of the Rhône and then did a loop of the Luberons. It must have been one of our earlier trips because it was when we travelled on the European Bike Bus. Just before arriving at Oraison we crossed the River Durrance which divides Provence in two. ... read more

Sunday 29th September 33 miles Before leaving Sault it was straight to the Vidal supermarket for lunch provisions and a few extras. Paul confessed he hadn't slept very well for worrying about if we would get food on the next three nights with Sunday and Monday often being difficult and last Tuesday being very difficult. Let's face it Friday and Saturday hadn't given us many options in Sault. On the plus side Forcalquier was quite big and touristy so that should be ok and we were in hotels for the next three nights which had restaurants but it depended what nights they were open. The route was basically on the D959 all day. All though it was not busy a road every so often motor bikers would pass us on their Sunday run. The first ten ... read more

Saturday 28th September Rest day. As we went down to breakfast there were some cyclists setting off "A Ventoux " they said. We wished them luck. (We later found out they were on ebikes). Breakfast was quite simple but adequate and there were the gluten free crackers for me and lots of milky coffee. It was leisurely as we were not going anywhere in a hurry. There was a large relief map on the wall and this again confirmed we had chosen the harder route yesterday. After a 'washing' session we had a wander around Sault. There was much more life to it than last night but it was a much smaller town than we had expected. It was quite touristy with lots of gifts shops and every now and then there would a strong smell ... read more

Friday 27th September 38 miles Breakfast had been left in the fridge in our apartment. It was a little sparse with orange juice, yoghurt, butter, jam, tea and coffee and two types of gluten free bread and some gluten free madeleines. One of the packs of gluten free was the kind that needs fifteen minutes in the oven to bake it so that was not edible. Fortunately, we had some granola with us that we had had to buy in Villefort so we could have sone of that with the yoghurt and followed it with bread and jam. We found a supermarket to start with and then we were heading East into Provence. It was mainly flat riding through vineyards and small villages with the mighty Ventoux getting gradually closer and closer. Each division of vines ... read more

Thursday 26th September 54 miles Breakfast was upstairs from our bedroom in another lovely room very artistically put together with some very old things. Florence had got me some gluten free bread and there was home made stewed apples, yoghurt and jams. We bought 'trois fromage baguettes ' and yoghurts before setting off. The guide book had said there would be no shops for the next twenty four miles. We had to walk through the market that was on and there were lots of lovely local produce for sale including cheeses, meat, honey, olives, hand made soaps, scarves and jewellery. If we had been in a car I could have easily have bought lots of things. Most French towns have these markets and they always seem busy. Out of town and towards the gorges. The Pont ... read more
