Updated notes: Cizur Minor to EUNATE - 20.5km (Total 111.9km) Day 7 The next day we walked to EUNATE the highlight of my trip so far. The steep elevation and strong winds while reaching the Alto de Perdon Hill was quite challenging. A very enjoyable trail with plenty of green trees, wheat fields, birds singing, colourful flowers and the warm sun apon our backs. Admiring wild orchids and reaching the summit (790mt), we were greeted by the Permanent metal medieval art pilgrims and were delighted to be amongst them and amoungst the hundreds of giant wind mills. We played the game of “one of these things is not like the others” while trying to hold on against the strong winds that were threatening to toss us back down the hill. A last look behind yields us ... read more

Arre to Cizur Minor - 16.5km (Total 91.4km) Day 6 The next morning in Pamplona we farewelled one of the South Africa couples Rob and Barbara (after 4 days of sharing the Camino) and we were invited to visit them in their home country. We spent most of the morning looking at the citys historical sights again and had an enjoyable day. The old pilgrim building is now going to be a 5 star hotel and the new albergue has been moved - we did eventually find it after many twists and turns and asking of directions to several locals. Walked to Cicur Minor which is just outside of Pamplona and stayed at the Albergue Anjuanista run by the Knights of St. John and our newly appointed hospitaleros were husband and wife Juan and Maria Jose ... read more

Zubiri to Arre 17.7km (Total 74.9km) Day 6 In Zubiri I noticed my micro towel was missing from the clothes line, I waited until next morning were I found a lone towel similar to mine blowing in the breeze, so I took it as a replacement. I firmly believe someone took mine by mistake. Let’s hope this person will read my blog!!! It was a glorious clear morning and was busy taking photos of plants, clouds and scenery. A detour into Zabaldika as pointed out by Brother John was well worth it ( although it cost us getting cought in a very strong and wet storm!!) We visited a very old Church that was looked after by the ‘Communidad Sagrada de Corazon’ or the Community of the Sacred Heart and the nun’s name was Mary Luz, ... read more

Pyrenees to Roncesvalles: Crossing the Pyrenees, going through a few forests full of beech wood tress and crossing the Col de Lepoeder summit at 1,450mt was wonderful with the most clear sunny day and mild temperatures. It was unforgettable. Going down from this summit, we found several pilgrims waiting and looking around Just before the descent into the forest, and wondered why???? We soon found out that this section was full of eagles flying about and using the warm thermal winds. They were majestic to watch. But we needed to move on. Since it was a great clear day with no signs of bad weather, we chose the more steep and difficult but shorter trail to Roncesvalles. It turned out to be one of my most memorable days of the trip. The forest was just gorgeous. ... read more

Hi everyone, I managed to walk for 3 days now with no problems so far. The walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Orisson was steep and very overcast - the reception meal and atmosphere was wonderfull but the inn was full and had to have a TENT - about 10pm the mist had settled low and on retiring the night sky was clear with no wind - it looked like we were on an Island - a moment to remember. The next day with bocadillos in hand we climbed and crossed the Pyreness with a clear sunny glorious day. We saw so many free roaming mountain horses and many young foals at hand. We even saw 3 just born and one standing and taking his first steps - a moment to remember. I was ... read more

It is just under 4 weeks till my trip to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. I am in the process of making final prepartions including my fitness. In particular, I gave my leg a bit of a try over a two week period and feel it fared quite well. I managed to walk 130km over 10 days, an average of 12km. I am pleased with this achievement and feel I will be able to average 15 to 20km a day depending of the terrain and weather. Much better that I thought I would do since I broke my leg (Spiral Tibia and Fibular compound fractures). One photo is of the fracture and the other when it was plated and pinned. T he plate and pins were removed about 18 months later (May ... read more

For those of you who know me, I have been preparing for my pilgrimage in Spain now for more than 12 months. I keep buying new backpacks, and gear until I feel that it is right in weight, size and functional in relation to my needs. I know some are sick of hearing (son and daughter) about foldable hats, the grams of items etc. I feel I am finally getting to the end of this and will publish my complete Backpack items list for any one who is interested. It is only once you start to plan that you realise just how much time and effort it all takes. After all it is only a walk of only 800km long and crossing 4 mountain ranges - you need to think of things like all weather possibilities ... read more
