Santiago de Compostela - Plasencia - Navalmoral de la Mata (Bus) The night was cool and it rained for most of it, it rained great big rain drops making the night so cosy. When the group left in the early hours it was raining moderately and continued to rain and drizzle until the afternoon. On such a morning it was glorious to be able to stay in bed a little longer. After a luxurious shower and packing our things we headed of for breakfast of hot churros and chocolate. I had to return later as I had left my walking stick behind and was lucky enough that it was still there, I had bought my own pelegrino stick complete with shell and water pumpkin. Au and I met Nua & Joselito at midday and had a ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 8) Camino Portugues from Caldas de Rey to Padron (20km) Caldas de Rey - Padron (20km) Woke at 4am but had the best sleep so far in the trip. Then rested until 6am and headed off be 6.30am while still dark. We left out backpacks outside the cafe to let others know where we were. We had toast and coffee. Photo with 'Franco' at doorway as well as many along the way with lovely tranquil scenery of the countryside. Lovely trees, ferns, moss, small amount of flowers and many areas of rural lands with corn and vines along gentle undulating slopes. Only walked along small amount of asphalt areas and managed to take several photos of locals at work and in the streets. A very old lady sitting on a low stool ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 7) Camino Portugues from Pontevedra to Caldas de Rey (21km) Pontevedra to Caldas de Rey Today, I must have been reborn. According to Cr and J-jo I was now 'Rusa' or the two 'Russitas' referring to Au and myself. I did not like it much and don't know why but anyhow it stuck and now I don't mind it so much. I then named Cr 'Franco' because of his moustache. Today's first half of the trail was quite cool with the odd drizzle, and as usual we began in darkness and later it was overcast. We did good timing and by 10-12km we rested few minutes by a picnic area with a 'cruzado' and an old communal washing trough. Here we ate some morning tea of fruit, bread and nuts. Stopped at ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 6) Camino Portugues from Redondela to Pontevedra (18km) I continue with my camino journal notes and photos for those who are interested. Redondela - Pontevedra (18km) ? Wed 4th August 2004 I had a good night's sleep/rest even though we did not end up getting much ventilation. Two walkers got up at 5am and by 0550 we stated our walk in darkness using our torches. By 0700 we started having some daylight and later a good amount of cloud with slight rain. We climbed a decent ascent to view Redondela while the town still had its night lights and reflections in the River de Vigo waters. (Photo). The sea enters the town areas where they cultivate 'mejillones' or oysters. Descending trail took us to Arcade where we breakfasted - hot milk with ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 4-5) Camino Portugues from Rubiaes - Tuy - Redondela (50km) Day 4 Rubiaes - Tuy (20km) We walked down to the town by 0600 where the lady from the restaurant promised to be opened for us to sell us some breakfast of coffees and toast. The kitten was left all alone and since it followed us when she was alone I did not like the thought of her getting run over if she tried to follow us on the busy road. So I wrapped her up in a coat and carried her to the outside of the restaurant, letting her loose before the others noticed that I had brought her. We headed off following the yellow arrows by 0700, the morning was cold, air crisp and there was fog. I was breathing ... read more

Ponte de Lima - Rubiaes (19km) Day 3 Ponte de Lima - Rubiaes (19km) Woke at 0600 and headed off by 0640. The morning was still dark and cool with a lot of fog of which we had to start looking very closely for the Yellow Arrows to show us the way. (On the previous trip the group missed an arrow and went the wrong way, they had a difficult start. So we all had to be on the look out for the elusive yellow arrows. These arrows can be a bit hidden, rubbed out, faded, or in a number of different places from stones, road, post, etc. You can imagine the excitement we had the night before when we found the first arrow and the end of the bridge the previous night). The fog lasted ... read more

Camino de Santiago de Compostela - Portuguese Trail with Badajoz walking group. Total of 151km On my first trip away from home I decided to head for Spain, being my birth country and understanding the language. It gave me the opportunity to go on the Camino Portuges to Santiago de Compostela with the a Spanish walking club. This trip gave me the sensation that I must come and walk it again. A number or people on the trail stated this same feeling and a few were on their 2nd, 3rd and 5th trip to Santiago. So here is my journal notes, follow it along with me and see how you feel afterwards. Using capital letters for peoples names. Day 1. Travelled by bus from Navalmoral de la Mata to Badajoz. Slept at Az’s friend Victor's house, ... read more
