Geo: 35.1241, -106.768Leaving San Antonio, we drove to El Paso to spend the night. It's an eight-hour drive across pretty much barren land on I-10 with an 80 miles-per-hour speed limit. We stopped a few times, but tried to minimize the number of stops since the gear shift handle was misbehaving. It worked just fine some times, then gets stuck other times. We were able to get it out of park every time, but I worried that it would eventually stick and not be able to move. We spent last night at the Embassy Suites in El Paso. It is right on the highway and was not overrun with children as has happened other times we have stayed at other Embassy Suites. The other guests looked to be mostly business travelers. We used a digital key ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946Another three-plus hour drive today got us to San Antonio. We took the route west from Conroe through Montgomery turning south at Navasota to avoid the Houston traffic. It's the best way to go. We have had the gear shift fail to change out of park on the first try a few times during the last few days so we asked Shaun and Yvette to come get us for dinner. They picked us up, and we went straight down Broadway to Fratello's. Good Italian fare with an excellent waitress. After dinner, we went back to the hotel to visit and to look at the mementos we picked up from Paula yesterday. Shaun tried on Charles' army jacket and cap which fit almost perfectly. He was happy to receive them, as well as his coat rack ... read more

Geo: 30.3122, -95.4559This morning we drove down to Conroe from Dallas with only one major slowdown just where I-45 intersects I-20. It took over an hour to go about three miles through a one-lane construction zone. When we got near Conroe, we made arrangements for a time to see Paula. Bill is working so we didn't get to see him, too. Philip and I picked up dinner from Dickey's and took it to their house at 5:00. Paula was standing in the driveway waiting to greet us when we arrived. The house is lovely with a fantastic array of fall decorations both inside and out. Bill is such a talented decorator! Paula had a treasure trove of goodies waiting for us. She and Bill (probably mostly Bill) had found Charles' army medals and uniform, a huge ... read more

Geo: 32.778, -96.7956Thursday night we spent in Hope, Arkansas. When we got up on Friday, we went to visit Bill Clinton's boyhood home. He lived there from birth to four years old, but was there often until he was ten since it was his grandparent's home. Arriving in Dallas Friday afternoon, we stopped at El Fenix for lunch then checked into The Highland for the weekend. Phil had time to finish grading most everything so we will have most of our time free for the next couple of days. For dinner, we walked to Campisi's Italian restaurant, also known as The Egyptian. It's a popular local bar and restaurant that is known as the place where Jack Ruby had dinner the night before he shot Lee Harvey Oswald. Phil liked his pizza; my veal scallopini was ... read more

Geo: 36.034, -89.3855Yesterday, we drove from Lewisburg, West Virginia, to Elizabethtown, Kentucky. When we got hungry for lunch, we saw a billboard for a BBQ place that looked good and left the highway at Milton, WV, to find it. The sign's directions said that it was a couple of miles off the highway. At the restaurant, we saw a sign on the door saying that they were closed for an emergency. There was one woman outside getting in a pick-up who mimed an apology, but we don't know what the emergency was. We had also seen a Biscuit World on the way and decided to try it. We've seen several of them across the area, and it seemed like time to get some local grub. When we pulled into their parking lot, Philip saw a barber ... read more

Geo: 37.8, -80.4467We arrived in the Washington, D.C. area on Saturday afternoon with reservations at the Bethesda Hyatt Regency. Traffic was busy all the way there and particularly in the city, but we made it without any significant slowdowns. Soon after getting on the beltway, we saw a sign warning that all lanes were closed a few miles ahead. We figured out that we needed to go farther than that point so we exited at the next available chance and used google maps on my phone to find an alternate route to the hotel. It worked out well for us to do so, and we were proud that we had avoided a long delay on the road. Once we arrived at the hotel, we encountered the most frustrating navigational challenge of the trip so far. The ... read more
