Geo: 32.778, -96.7956This morning, we had breakfast in the hotel again then spent the morning in the room so Phil could get caught up on his grading. The first speaker that we wanted to hear today was David McKay, a photographer who leads trips all over the world while teaching his attendees to photograph the places they see. He had a few tips, but the presentation was geared to the beginning photographer so I didn't hear much of anything new to me. I think his trips would be fun though as he works with individuals at whatever level they are at. We had a break after the first talk and spent a little more time looking at the exhibits and picking up travel brochures. The companies exhibiting there were mostly smaller ones offering tours and trips. ... read more

Geo: 32.778, -96.7956After breakfast in the hotel this morning, we were ready to go to the Dallas Market Hall for the travel show by 9:30. It opened at 10, and we left the hotel early so we would be sure to be able to pick up our tickets and be in line to go in as soon as it opened. Rick Steves was scheduled to speak at 10:15, and we did not know how big the seating area would be for his presentation so we wanted to be there early. As it turned out, we got there a little too early, picked up our tickets, then went across the street to the Renaissance Hotel to sit in the lobby to wait. When we returned to the hall, there was a long line to get into the ... read more

Geo: 32.778, -96.7956We drove the rest of the way to Dallas today. It was only about a four-hour drive. The GPS in the RAV4 took us on a route that we haven't taken into Dallas before. We passed through Decatur on 287 then about 15 miles later turned east on highway 114. We stayed on it until it joined 183 then I35E and became the Stemmons Freeway. It was much easier than the way we usually go although it was on smaller roads. There was some construction, but not too much traffic. We arrived at the hotel by 2 p.m. so we weren't out during most of the traffic. After checking into the hotel, Phil was able to get his schoolwork finished. We walked next door to Whatburger for a take-out dinner. ... read more

Geo: 34.4264, -100.204We drove a little bit farther today than we usually do in one day. Made it to Childress for the night after stopping for lunch in Tucumcari at Kix on 66. It had shown up on one of the lists of good restaurants in the state, but I don't remember where I saw it. The lunch was good, but not outstanding. On this route, it is unusual for us to stop to eat before we get to Amarillo, but thought we'd give it a try. It looks like it used to be a Denny's.After checking in at the Hampton, we went to Top Notch Texas for a barbeque dinner. Seems like all we did today was drive and eat. I did much of the driving while Phil worked on grading papers. We'll get to ... read more

Geo: 35.0841, -106.649We flew overnight to Houston arriving there just after 5 a.m. The Global Entry line at customs was short, thankfully. We grabbed our luggage and took it through customs then waited in a long line to get through security. There is no TSA precheck line available for people connecting from international to domestic flights. The United lounge was open so we waited there for the last flight--about a four hour layover. This has been such an magnificent trip! I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to see Antarctica first hand. The rugged landscape, the everchanging seascape, the entertaining and completely unconcerned animals, the numerous birds, and the bold and robust people who accept the challenge of living there are all unbelievable. I so enjoyed every one of the six days that we ... read more

Geo: -33.0206, -71.5548We disembarked the ship for the last time this morning. It's always sad to say "good-bye" to all that luxury at the end of a cruise. But before we headed to the airport, we spent the day touring Valparaiso, Viña del Mar and the Casablanca Valley on one last ship-sponsored excursion. We drove through Valparaiso seeing the hills of the city and the funiculars that provide service up and down. We stopped at two locations there: an overlook point to see the city and coastline from up high and near the coast for a walking tour of the area. Next we drove through Viña del Mar, passed by the large floral clock that is its centerpiece, and stopped at the Fonck Museum for a tour.Leaving the cities behind, we drove into the Casablanca Valley known ... read more

Geo: -41.4752, -72.9521We started the day with an early alarm and room service breakfast before our shore excursion. The ship was anchored again so we left the room to get in line for the tender shortly before 8:00. The tender ride was okay—not as smooth as yesterday, but okay. By the time we got to the port, we were led to bus two for the Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, and Frutillar tour. Four people had not made the tender with our group so we had to wait another forty minutes while the tender made another trip back and forth. They seem to have only one tender launched in each of the last ports. The tour took us to the Puerto Montt town square and the handicraft market first. Usually tours end with the shopping stop, but ... read more
