Geo: 38.9731, -95.2365The hotel was fine overnight, and we were up early with the help of the alarm to get going in time to make it to Spivey, Kansas before the post office closed at 11:15 a.m. This trip was through the backroads of Oklahoma and Kansas on mostly two-lane roads without much traffic. We pulled into Spivey about 10:45 and drove first to the post office. I created and printed postcards at home with a sunflower photo and "Greetings from Spivey, Kansas" on them to mail to all the Spiveys whose physical addresses we have. I took the cards inside the post office and asked the young woman working there if they could be postmarked locally. She did that for me stamping them clearly in red. I also mailed one to us. After dropping off ... read more

Geo: 36.4337, -99.399Today was a fun day stopping at two places in the Texas Panhandle. First we drove to Lake Meredith Harbor to see what it looks like now. We haven't been there since the fire the destroyed over 150 structures in May, 2014. The area doesn't look too bad. There are a few places that have debris that may have been from the fire, but it could be just usual deterioration of old buildings. The mobile home that used to stand on the corner next to our property has been removed. The home on the other end of the block looks the same, but it is impossible to tell for sure since it surrounded by many trees and shrubs. The water level looks pretty good compared to the last time we were there, but still ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834We made it to Amarillo by late afternoon, after leaving home about 10:30 so I could stop and get my nails done on the way out of town. Philip dropped me off and went for gas then dropped our leftover groceries at Erin's while I was busy at the salon. We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn then had dinner at Dyer's—delicious as always. Phil worked on school stuff during the evening, but didn‘t have a lot to do. We made it an early night.... read more

Geo: 35.0841, -106.649The last drive was uneventful as has been the whole trip. We made it by 1:00 and stopped at Vinaigrette for lunch before going home. We have had a wonderful time on this 3,840 mile trip. The best part was getting to reconnect with Ruth's side of the family that we hadn't seen in years. They expect to get together again next year, but in the autumn when it will be cooler. We plan to go then, too.Phil has some new information to enhance his research and more leads to follow now. While we were at the family reunion, Louella kindly loaned Phil an antique math notebook that she had which belonged to one of the relatives. It is mostly handwritten notes on mathematical instructions and formulas probably written as a study aid in ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834Another day of driving from Fort Smith to Amarillo. We could have driven the rest of the way tonight, but it would have put us into Albuquerque very late, so we decided to stop one more night. After eating barbecue in every state that we've been through, sometimes more than once, this was the first time in a long time arriving in Amarillo that I didn't insist on going to Dyer's for dinner. Instead we went to Saltgrass for steak for Phil and chicken fried steak for me. We will be home tomorrow.... read more

Geo: 35.3846, -94.4213This morning, we toured Graceland before hitting the road again. It took us just less than three hours to wait in line, go through the self-guided tour, have a break for a cold drink, and visit the gift shops. I had purchased the tickets ahead of time to pick up at the will-call window. As it turned out, that was the longest line when we were there, and it didn't help us to get any priority to take the tour. After getting our tickets, I noticed that the clerk had moved us up for a tour thirty minutes earlier than requested so we went straight to get in line for the shuttle to the mansion. That line lasted forty-five minutes or so, but finally we were given headphones and iPads to use during the ... read more
