Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Tromsø November 19th 2017

15th November After leaving Kristiansand on Sunday we sailed up the the west coast of Norway crossing into the Arctic Circle towards Tromso. The Sunday night was choppy to say the least with a Force 9 blowing and 6 - 8 metre swells. Monday morning brought calmer conditions and the captain apologised for the 'potholes' in the night. We arrive in Tromso early morning Wednesday 15th and depart for Alta early morning (3.30 am) on the 16th. Apart from the inclement weather on the sail up to Tromso we had a showing of the Northern Lights in the late evening of Tuesday, we were able to glimpse a quick peak before it calmed down. One of the things to get to grips with is that sunrise is 09.30 am and sunset is 01.30 pm, we left ... read more

Europe » Norway » Southern Norway » Kristiansand November 12th 2017

11th November - on board Aurora Embarking Southampton our erstwhile Captain informs us that we are already subject to a change of itinerary. Low pressure has been forming over Scotland and are forecast to hit the west coast of Norway on Sunday and Monday. This has meant our scheduled call to Andalsnes has been cancelled as the entrance to the Fjord makes it tricky to access in high winds. It's a shame because Aldalsnes would have been our first introduction to a Norwegian fjord. Apparently it is a typical fjord community surrounded by dramatic peaks and its painted houses give it a picture postcard charm with a backdrop of snow snow capped mountains. So our first port of call will be Kristiansand, which lies on the south coast of Norway in the Skaggerak Sea. This a ... read more

Lisbon 19th June Our last port of call, and it was going to be so hot. I know it's hot back in the UK and we are looking forward to having some sunshine at home. The weather has been mixed on this cruise, but has come good since Lanzarote. Lisbon's high was to be 34 degrees C and it was!!!! So just a few pictures, including some from Tenerife and Lanzarote where we didn't do much. The gardens on Tenerife we have been to before, particularly the Orchid Garden on the other side of the island. Lanzarote - we've done the camel rides, been up Timanfaya and Manrique too so again it was a quiet time on the ship. After all this is a holiday!!! As for Lisbon, it would have been nice to go up ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Gran Canaria June 17th 2017

Las Palmas 16th June Gran Canaria is (another) volcanic island with deep valleys, volcanic cones and a picturesque landscape. The main city and heart is the port and capital Las Palmas, we were here back in 2004 and could not recall what wedid!!!! Must be old age setting in. Gran Canaria is one of the most popular islands in the Canaries, mainly because of sandy beaches, the landscape is probably less dramatic than its neighbours such as Tenerife and Lanzarote but its place in history is right up there!! Pause for history lesson. Originally the islands were the thought to be the last vestiges of Atlantis but recent discoveries suggest that they have been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The original inhabitants were the Guanches, a native race who for years resisted the Spanish from conquering ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » La Palma June 14th 2017

Santa Cruz de La Palma 14th June La Palma, the worlds steepest island is a lush, green hideaway far removed by the hustle and bustle of other Canary Island resorts. We first called here back in 2004 on the old QE2, and were keen to see how much has changed. The island is dominated by the huge crater of Caldera de Taburiente, one of the worlds largest. The southern region has many small volcanoes and the surrounding ravines show the volcanic origins of La Palma. Also known as La Isla Verde (the Green Island), La Palma is famous for its flora and fauna, which covers the island in a carpet of varying shades of green. Although one of the smallest Canary Islands, mile for mile it is more mountainous than Tibet! In the north you'll find ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Madeira » Funchal June 13th 2017

Madeira We have been to Madeira many times, normally at the beginning of the year so it was great to be back when some of gardens were in full bloom. The cruise is focussed on the flower festivals on the islands so it was off on a tour to see two of them. By the way as usual a half a day in each garden was not nearly enough to do the places justice. Gardens are open throughout the year and welcome visitors. Our first garden was on the Palheiro Estate known more famously as Blandys garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in Madeira Island, today they form part of the Estate which includes a Hotel, Golf course, the Palheiro Village and Florialis orchid nurseries. The land first belonged to the Count of Carvalhal ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Celtic Sea June 10th 2017

Southampton en route to Madeira 10th June 2017 Well here we are again, on board the refitted and slightly refurbished Queen Victoria. Our cruise is taking us to an overnight stop in Funchal, Madeira and then onto the Canary Islands visiting La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote bore heading home via Lisbon. The cruise is themed to take in the Flower Festivals in Madeira and the Canaries. Queen Victoria has had a major refit since we left her on the 5th May. The major alteration is the new stern, where the stepped decks have been straightened. As one Cunard employee said, she's got a bigger 'bum'. Internally, there is a new restaurant, and a reconfiguration of some of the bars, but the extra space up in the Lido pool area is the most significant change. New ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Azores » São Miguel » Ponta Delgada May 2nd 2017

1st May Ponta Delgada Our final port of call was Ponta Delgada on the island Sao Miguel, Azores. This is a remote Portuguese archipelago some 760 miles west of Lisbon in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of nine islands in three groups and was first settled by Gonçalo Valho Cabral in 1439, there is a statue of him at the city gates. The land commands a high price because of its fertility, dairy products, live cattle are the most important trades along with beet-sugar, alcohol and pineapples. Ponta Delgada has narrow and cobbled winding streets and in lots of ways reminded us of Funchal, Madeira. A lot of the buildings are whitewashed and have wooden balconies. The streets are paved with mosaics and there are churches at most street corners (or so it seemed). We wandered ... read more

North America » Bermuda » Hamilton April 27th 2017

Bermuda 26th April Hamilton We berthed in The Royal Naval Dockyard, alongside the Norwegian Breakaway (4500 passengers) - it was going to be a busy one!!! From when we arrived the queues were long to board the ferry to Hamilton a 30/40 minute ride across the Bay. There is a lot of activity within the Dockyard because this year the USA are defending the Americas Cup. The worlds best known yacht race. From our balcony you could see each of the teams berths unfortunately the British team were furthest down the quay with the United States in prime position (being the defending champions). We were hoping to get a glimpse of the BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing) team but the only teams that got onto the water were the US and NZ teams. Watching the US boat ... read more
