6th March Embarking Queen Victoria This leg of our trip is going to take us back to Australia via The Bay of Islands calling at Sydney (2 days) and Melbourne. From there, it's back across 'The Ditch' to cruise the Sounds starting with Milford Sound. We then sail around to Dunedin and Christchurch (from Akaroa) before heading to Wellington, from there it's to Apia (Samoa), Honolulu, Hawaii (the Big Island) and finish the leg with a two day stop in San Francisco. Pictures are of us leaving the beautiful 'City of Sails'. Once again Thankyou John & Heather x... read more

5th March Waiheke Our final day in Auckland before embarking Queen Victoria So an early morning ferry ride to Waiheke Island, but first we had to reach the ferry terminal in the CBD. Whoops!!! Nobody had told us about the Bay run where thousands of fun runners were gathering to take part for a jog round the harbour! Loads of roads closed but our erstwhile chauffeur (JP) found a car park for the short walk to the ferry. Meeting up with the Paines friends, Jan & John we set out for the short ferry ride to the island. Waiheke lies in the Hauraki Gulf which stretches from Auckland and the Coromandel peninsula. There are some 47 islands administered by the DOC (Department of Conservation). As you ferry out you pass Rangitoto, joined by a causeway with ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland April 10th 2017

4th March Auckland So back to Auckland today, I had a nice walk around the Government gardens and the sculpture park before breakfast. The remains of the picnic from the previous night were packed for lunch on the go and we were off on our scenic tour back to the City of Sails. We headed up to and skirted Tauranga, before arriving at Waihi. Gold and silver have been dragged our of Martha's mine since 1878, the town quickly built up around this new found wealth but the mine closed in 1952, open cast mining started in 1988 but a slippage has subsequently closed Martha's mine. There is a museum but little else to see, nearby Waihi beach is the place to go. We were heading towards Karangahake gorge for lunch, when we arrived everybody else ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua April 10th 2017

1st March Rotorua The trip from Napier took us across more spectacular countryside, with very few townships and even fewer petrol stations. Fill up before you leave any big town!!!. We bypassed Taupo before heading into Rotorua for a few days to be chauffeured by John and have a couple of days respite from Doris (our nagging Sat nav) The hotel was close on Sulphur Lake but with all the amenities close by. 2nd March Lake Taupo and surrounds New Zealand's largest lake, sits in a caldera that began erupting some 300,000 years ago. This lake and surrounding waterways attract fishing enthusiasts from all over. Our first stop was the Huka Falls on the Waikato river, New Zealand's longest, fed from Lake Taupo the Falls crash on to the Aratiatia Rapids another place for adrenaline junkies. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Napier March 7th 2017

Napier 26th February Arriving on Sunday afternoon through the industrial area doesn't prepare what you will find in this town. Rebuilt after the deadly 1931 earthquake in the style of the time, the city retains a unique concentration of Art-Deco buildings. The earthquake killed 161 with a further 101 fatalities in neighbouring Hastings and reduced much of the town to rubble. The land in places rose 7 feet and Napier airport was later built on land that was once the seabed. Napier was rebuilt in two years in the Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles popular in the 1930s and is now regarded as the Art Deco capital of the world. Napier is low-rise and we were looking forward to walking the streets to look at the 1930's facades which can provoke the atmosphere of the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » East Coast » Gisborne March 2nd 2017

New Plymouth to Gisborne 24th February Up early and on the road at 7am Now Doris (our Sat Nav) wasn't quite awake and as we went down the east side of Mt Taranaki she wanted to take us back to Dawson Falls. Mind you Mt Taranaki looked beautiful with the sun rising on her. We'd chosen to go South towards Palmerston North before passing through the Manawatu Gorge and turning North for the run up to Gisborne. With Doris now awake we headed down to Hawera, now don't expect too much stopping on this route. For instance Hawera's listed highlights include an Elvis Presley museum which houses over 10,000 of the kings records and a mind boggling collection of memorabilia!!! Apparently a good pit stop to stretch your legs, onwards to Whanganui which we easily bypassed ... read more

Onwards to New Plymouth 20th February Forward to New Plymouth, and giving the bird to the Motor Inn as we left Waitomo it was down to Taranaki for the next few days. Having the extra day took the pressure off having to try to pack all we wanted to do into a short period of time. The drive down, again takes you through some spectacular scenery with undulating hills and windy roads. Unfortunately the weather was not the best but we did get some sunshine during the day. As we approached New Plymouth we kept seeing these old American cars and arriving at the Hotel, there were more in the car park. We had arrived at the beginning of the 'Americana' festival, an annual event when American car enthusiasts get together for a jamboree. They spend ... read more

Bay of Islands to Auckland Left Paihia after a pleasant few days, we are back for one day only on March 7th so hope to do the Treaty Grounds at Waitangi. Before leaving we stopped at the Hurura Falls, we had rowed to these in a Maori war canoe a couple of years ago. Anyway, onward down the West coast of Northland first of traversing the spine of the Northland passing through some spectacular scenery and the townships of Kaikohe, Taheke, Waima before coming upon Opononi with more scenery of huge sand dunes that surround Hokianga Harbour, the fourth biggest in the country. This area remains underdeveloped, just how the locals like it. But for how long!!! From here it's a drive down through the Waipoua and Kauri forests, the forests boast some of the largest ... read more

Bay of Islands 16th March Day 2 Paihia & Waitangi The birthplace of NZ, Waitangi inhabits a complex place in the Nations minds. Demonstrated by a mixture of celebration and apathy that accompanies the nations birthday on Waitangi Day On February 6th. The long awaited Treaty was signed here between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown, establishing British sovereignty depending if your reading the British or Maori versions of the Treaty!!! Anyway a bit more of that later when we visit the different Missions in this part of the world as against the Mission Winery down in Hawkes Bay. It seems like a long haul up to Paihia but it does turn out to be worthwhile. A dry drive until the last crest and then the heavens opened. Still it's warm rain. Being early and ... read more

Bay of Islands 15th March Auckland to Whangarei Day 1 After leaving Auckland on the 14th, Valentine's Day, we had to look for accommodation for the night. We headed towards Waipu, a small township just off Highland 1 in Bream Bay. This was the settlement of over 800 Highlanders who arrived here under the guidance of the Presbyterian minister Norman McLeod. They arrived here in the 1850s after leaving Scotland following the Clearances, they came the long way round via Nova Scotia and Australia. A highlight of Waipus calendar are the annual Highland games held in the New Year. We needed accommodation so headed a bit further North to the town of Wharangei, visiting the Isite (Tourist Board info) just on the outskirts of town. This is when we found there wasn't much accommodation to be ... read more
