19th July Oslo This was a late (but scheduled) arrival for us, berthing at 11 am. But another spectacular cruise for some 60 miles sailing up Oslofjord docking in the heart of Oslo. Any closer and the ship would be berthing in the main reception area of the Radhuset City Hall, a very austere looking building overlooking the port of Oslo. One of the main attractions of Oslo is its museums, and oh boy do they love their museums and galleries. Our daily programme lists 24 museums and galleries and that doesn’t include Sculpture parks, churches and Cathedrals. The museums range from the Resistance Museum to more seafaring based ones which include the National Maritime, the Kon Tiki, and the Fram Museums. The Fram was the vessel that Amundsen and Nansen made their Arctic and Antarctic ... read more

18th July Copenhagen Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen, approached on another beautiful sunny summers day. As usual with late morning arrivals the buses are full and queues are the order of the day. As we berthed only a 20 minute stroll into the centre it was the way to see some of this easy going bonhomie of this ‘wonderful’ city. Copenhagen was the adopted home of Hans Christian Anderson, commemorated by the statue of the Little Mermaid, a bronze statue dated 1913 by a Danish artist Edvard Eriksen. It is the most photographed lady in Copenhagen, situated on the Langeline Promenade only 200 metres from where we were berthed, chances of us getting a photo were slim on our way out as the world and his dog (well tourists, mainly Japanese) were crawling (literally) all over her. Hans ... read more

16th July Tallinn Capital of Estonia, it’s post independence renaissance has bred new life to this city. The old town has a beautiful tableau of gabled roofs and turrets. The spoiler was the four other cruise ships in, offloading some 12000 passengers plus us into the cobbled streets. Again a few pics to give a flavour of the city. We had a great lunch with local beer in restaurant/cafe and we didn’t hear an English voice. Magical!!!... read more

14th/15th July St Petersburg Day One Russias most European city is the Jewel in the Baltic Crown and was Peter the Greats ‘Window on the West’. The European influence is that Helsinki and Tallinn are only a few hours away but it can take up to 9hours to reach Moscow. Needless to say the first day had the delays of passing through passport control and it seems better that you arrange tours through the Cruise because of visa restrictions. Day One Peterhof palace and Fountain gardens Day Two Catherine Palace and gardens Pictures paint a thousand words and I’ve whittled the photos down to some 30+ for the two days.... read more

13th July This was a change to the itinerary, Mr Trump decided to visit with Mr Putin so we had alter the dates!! Finland Helsinki Finlands capital, daughter of the Baltic its a city that has many Neo Classical buildings, loads of museums. Their very big on museums in the Baltic!! An easy city to walk, the Market Square at the end of the Esplanade where there are loads of stalls selling local produce and souvenirs. The imposing Uspenski Cathedral overlooks the area and the a short walk brings you into Senate Square where unfortunately all the tours from everywhere congregate. A short walk brings you back to the railway station with another austere facade.... read more

Europe July 17th 2018

12th July Sweden God Morgan from Stockholm Cruising into Stockholm on a sunny morning is a delight. It takes nearly 5 hours from when the pilot comes aboard to docking. We approached the city through a string of 14 islands and inlets where the Baltic meets Lake Malaren. At every inlet there are holiday chalets perched on the waters edge, some very basic and some more grand (if thats grammatically correct). So if you cannot be bothered to get up to see the sights in the morning you can wait until sail away in the evening and do it the opposite way round. The heart of the city is its medieval quarter the Gamla Stan and this is where we began our explorations. We had a guide for the visit to the Royal Palace which is ... read more

Our first Baltic cruise takes into the Baltic with hopefully the highlight being 2days in St Petersburg Apologies for time delays but Internet on board is as usual poor and EXPENSIVE 8th July Southampton in the July sunshine, what could be better than a sail away from the UK in 31 degrees of sunshine. Within 24 hrs of leaving home we were in think fog in the North Sea and it was 15 degrees with the promise at the end of the day of a Force 7 gale. What a difference a day makes!!! Well at least the restaurant was quiet. 10th July Skagen After the travails of the previous day and a bumpy night it was our first port of call Goddag from Skagen. This is what’s called a ‘filler’ port, a half day visit ... read more

Well after my last blog, we said we were looking for warmer climes The deal was Lin wanted to see the Northere Lights (ticked big time) and we would travel to the Caribbean for Jan/Feb. How disappointed were we, when we got back to our cabin last Tuesday (Phil day) to find the 50 night cruise on Oriana had been cancelled. Essential maintenance - propulsion we think - a bit key if your crossing the Atlantic!!! Our first full winter at home for a number of years Brr!!! Nothing in the diary Until spotted a couple of back to back cruises for July/August So back on board Arcadia to Scandinavia and Russia and then on to France, Spain and Italy. Highlights will be St Petersburg, a return to Helsinki (for me), to Copenhagen (for Lin) and ... read more

Stavanger 20th November We dock next to Gamle Stavanger, the old town, tiny wooden houses, cobbled lanes typify a living museum. Stavanger originally a fishing port, there were 70 canneries in the 1920's, the last one closed in 1983. The demise of the sardine industry coincide with the discovery of oil and it soon became the centre of Norway's oil and gas industry. Stavanger is not just an industrial town, the city is a charming mixture of old wooden houses and has a developing tourist industry. Old Stavanger has a charming selection of old wooden houses, narrow streets, old fashioned lampposts and various workshops have sprung up and Norwegian art is on sale. Stavanger Domkirke, the Cathedral built under the direction of the Bishop of Winchester is the best preserved medieval church in Norway, it has ... read more

Alta 16th/17th November We came, we saw and we were MESMERISED Well, the time has come the walrus said - will we see the lights yes or no!!! First a bit about Alta, and the county of Finnmark. We arrive in Alta today Thursday the 16th, at about 1pm - 30 mins before sunset. We have sailed from Tromso overnight having set sail at 4am, sailing through the Fjords around to Alta. We spotted a few Orcas early on but sadly no humpbacks!! Apparently there some but only feeding. Alta is situated at the head of Altafjord and its main modern claim to fame is where the battleship Tirpitz and other German cruisers laid up in wait for allied shipping. Following Germany's invasion of Norway in 1940 there were as many as 15000 troops based in ... read more
