Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town June 19th 2008

Cape Town was never really on my itinerary as it is in the opposite direction of where I want to end up. The reason why I came down was Matt a friend of mine which I met in Sydney a long time ago and which is living here now. Cape Town is in a stunning location with the ocean on one side the table mountain in the back and some other mountains on the sides. It still contains quite a few old colonial Dutch and English buildings and is quite pleasant to walk around in. The first day was spent walking around the rater nice city and getting wet followed by a BBQ or Brai as they call it here. The weekend was rather interesting as we went to the annual South African Ski Club Christmas ... read more

On the road yet again. If you’re wondering what’s going on then that ok. I still owe lots of you and email about the what, why, how and with whom of this trip. It will happen shortly I promise It has been only about a month since I heard that I will be made redundant and now I'm sitting in a small office in my backpacker's in Johannesburg. Was glad to leave the last few weeks behind me as there was so much to organize and do but hey who is complaining. No other commitments for the next 7 1/2 months :) Ok shall not forget to meet Kellie in 7 weeks… The flight was rather uneventful and pretty relaxing as I had a whole middle row of seats to myself. Doesn’t happen very of then ... read more

After nearly 2 years back in Sydney it is time to hit the road again... If you are surprised that I am traveling again then you’re not alone. I'm surprised too. Didn’t plan this trip at all, it forced itself on me. The whole story started when my company (yet again) made some people redundant. I told my boss that I wouldn’t be too unhappy to leave and 3 days later I was “kicked” out. Wasn’t a traumatic experience at all as I had two more weeks to handover my stuff and the whole deal was sweetened with a nice payout. Initially I thought "let’s find a new job" (seriously how stupid was I?). I only started to think about traveling when everyone asked the same question "where are you going to?" I cracked after hearing ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Denver December 24th 2006

This blog entry is pretty old and incomplete. Read at own risk ;) It never snows in Denver someone said to me. He was clearly lying. I had one week of nearly cold but perfect weather. Then on the day when I had to travel a bit further it starts snowing. It all didn’t start too bad. Got up early and did the 30+ miles in 1h 45 min not too bad for rush-hour traffic, which is slowed down by a bit of snow on the ground. I got a bit suspicious when two of the people I wanted to meet with didn’t show up because of the weather. The final hint came when the governor announced a civil state f emergency and started deploying the national guard and all that because of a bit of ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Dallas December 12th 2006

Yes yes I still owe you four travel logs from Europe and Tokyo and here is another one from a different continent… This time it’s not purely for fun in fact it’s mainly for business. I’m over in the states to meet up with many people which work on my project. Saying that I still managed to squeeze in some sightseeing in the heartland of the States (which voted for Bush) and later up in Denver. Dallas is the first stop and as you know me, the weird and wonderful is my thing so I am in the right place. Dallas is also known as the big D, which is at least correct when it comes to the size of the city. The city stretches forever. They really have space here and it shows outside of ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Stuttgart July 26th 2006

This blog entry is pretty old and incomplete. Read at own risk ;) First stop in Germany was as usual Stuttgart the last place I lived back then in the good old days in Germany. I think I mentioned before that I changed my flights so that I arrive for the last two games of the world cup. That was a brilliant decision (have to pat myself on the shoulder here). I flew into Frankfurt and then took the train to Stuttgart. A friend was waiting for me in the train station and I knew something had changed in Germany when I saw him dressed in a German flag. That was completely unheard of when I lived there. Stepping outside of the train station was like walking into a flag store. The game for the third ... read more
