South America » Paraguay » Encarnacion February 19th 2006

Now that I have your attention let me start from the beginning. As I mentioned in the previous blog I wanted to take a bus to Asuncion which is the capital of Paraguay. As it goes with plans they are made to be changed and so I did. I met a polish guy at the bus terminal in Montevideo and he had the plan to get off in the first city in Paraguay to see some old Jesuit ruins. As I didn’t want to see another city I decided to go along with him. We got dropped off in Encarnacion at 3am in the morning after 15 hours on the bus. The bus ride itself wasn’t that bad at all and we even got lunch and dinner. The latter was served late as usual at 10.30 ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento February 17th 2006

Three weeks three countries... No I'm not just collecting Stamps in my passport I really heard its worth going to Uruguay. Colonia What is there to say about Colonia. It was founded 1680 by the Portuguese to piss of the Spanish which just founded Buenos Aires and to smuggle stuff into BA. It is named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site; it is really cute and has lot of old building and cobble stone streets. Have a look at the pics and you know what I mean. Montevideo Before you ask no I didn’t mention that I live in Australia while I'm in Montevideo. Somehow that didn’t seem to be a wise thing to do. (For the non Australians. Australia beat Uruguay in the qualifier of the WM and kicked them out of the race ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires February 12th 2006

Unfortunately the best times come to an end and I had to leave Easter Island but hey who cares if your next destination is Buenos Aires. Many who have been there hyped BA and I have to say there were completely correct. This place rocks! If you ever look for a place in South America that is not too different from back home but is still interesting then this is the place to be. Lets start from the beginning. I managed to get a shuttle bus to my hostel after arriving at 2am in the night! Unfortunately the hostel I booked was pretty loud and full of Israelis. Please don't get me wrong I like them if they travel alone but if they are in a group they are a pain in the butt. So on ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island January 30th 2006

Whatever you want to call it, it is the small volcanic island in the middle of nowhere between Australia and South America. It is 3600 km west of Chile (of which it is part of) and 2075 km east of Pitcairn Island and this makes it the most isolated inhabited island in the world (you have to be famous for something). It is located at “27°09'S 109°27'W” (put that into Google earth and you shall see) and is just over 160 km2 big and has today a population of just about 3800 inhabitants. I arrived there on the 25th and found a nice and not that expensive (This one if for you Marc) accommodation in Hanga Roa, the only and therefore biggest town on the island. I shared my room with Paul and Tom and met ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago January 25th 2006

Please let me know if you can see the pictures ok as they seem to be very dark on the monitor here but I suspect that this is more a problem with the monitor not the pictures. Santiago De Chile the first stop on my journey. The not so good new is that the city itself is not that exciting and doesn’t offer a lot for the tourist. Luckily I had only one day here while waiting for my flight to the Easter Island. After walking around town and trying the few Spanish sentences I still know on a few shopkeepers, I still had time to visit the Pre-Columbian Museum which has exhibits from various places around central and South and Central America. Quite interesting as far as museums go with a few exhibits for ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney January 23rd 2006

Welcome to my travel blog. I'm currently sitting at my desk at work and have only 18 hours to go.
