Ruth woke me around 4.30am she was a little frightened as the wind has not ceased and she feared the roof would blow of or that we would get washed away in a tidal wave, after providing comfort and reassurance we slept till 8.30am. The wedding planner (Teresa) is due at 10am so we showered, dressed and had some breakfast getting ready to face the day, Teresa arrived on time and we spent about half an hour organising the ceremony, cake, flowers and reception location before heading to the Court House in Avarua where we completed the necessary forms to get the wedding license. Teresa then took us on a quick orientation tour around town before driving us to the preposed reception venue at Tamarind House before being dropped at my parents bungallow. The bungallow is ... read more

Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga August 31st 2008

After a year of intolerable idleness its now time to embark on a new adventure. This time its off too the South Pacific with a stint in the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. I must admit that after spending my first winter at home in 5 years I am looking forward to balmy days under a palm tree on a nice beach with a beer in my hand. This trip is special for more than just the weather as Ruth and I will exchange vows on Muri Beach on Raratonga. Then it will be off to explore the island and do a little diving, trekking, horseriding etc. After that its on to Aitutaki before continuing on to Papeete on Tahiti in French Polynesia. My parents will also be on the flight as they are attending the ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Jurong West August 2nd 2007

I arrived in Singapore early in the day and had a few things planned on this trip, having been here a number of times before I have seen most of the sites. I hadnt visited Changi Prison or the Jurong bird park so they were high on my to do list. I had already checked my bag in for the flight home so I took a cab straight from the airport to the Changi Museum, eventually the cabbie found it and I visited a place that my my uncle endured for much of WW2, I found the place quiet poignant and very interesting. I left a note there in memory of my uncle before visiting the chapel and the restaurant for a beer. I then caught a bus back to the nearest subway station catching a ... read more

I woke up early again this morning the call to preyer is unforgiving when it comes to sleeping, I had a quick breakfast before heading to the Tuku train station for my 7 hour ride to Jakarta. The Executive trains are quite comfortable and serve a small lunch and tea through out the trip. I had the fortune to be seated next to a Dutch guy, I think I like the dutch the most of the Europeans I have met, they seem more out going then most. Anyway we proceeded to drink the bar dry (they only had for 4 cans LOL) and then jumped off and got more at the stops. It was pleasant trip through some beautiful country side, Jakarta is big spralling city and as we entered the poverty was pronounced with people ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Borobudur July 28th 2007

Woke up with the call to prayer at 4.30am which was ok because my tour was off at 5am, the minivan turned up I crawled in and went to sleep. We arrived at Borobudor at about 6.30 as the sun began to rise, and were promptly jumped on by touts, they are really bad, its difficult not to be rude to them. I was in a good mood I was about to behold a wonder and I was not disappointed in the least, it was a truly amazing site. As you can see from the pictures the temple has thousands of intricate carvings, I couldn’t believe it. It took decades to build around the 8th century, and decorate yet the people who built it just packed up and left a century or two after completion it ... read more

It's been a long day I arrived here at 8.30am local time that's 2 and half hours behind Adelaide and headed straight off to the Puri Mangku Negaran and Kraton Surakarta they were worth a look the Kraton is quite large and is the residence of the king of Solo, and had a lot of old interesting memorabilia. Then it was off on a 6 hour bike ride (pinion) to check out some old Hindu temples, specifically Candi Sukuh and Candi Ceto, they were both really worth the effort, they looked like something the Maya built. The problem was that the motorbikes here are not real big and my arse will never forgive me, also the traffic here is some what insane and I thought I was going to die so many times. We did have ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Kuching July 25th 2007

Its true and Kuching is totally cat orientated, they have a Museum of Cats and cat statues all over the place. This city is really attractive probably more so then KK, I am amazed as most Asian cities just arent. On arrival from the airport I went wandering around for quite a while, I was trying to find a Lonely Planet book for Indonesia as I go there in a few days and I wanted to go to Mcdonalds, I have never been a big fan of Asian food and I am getting sick of chicken and rice. Although saying that I am looking forward to Soto Ayam when I get to Indo. I then wandered along the river front and checked out the antique shops, I found a great sword but am reluctant to risk ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah July 22nd 2007

This morning I am being picked up and driven by mini bus through the palm oil plantations to a lodge on the Kinabatangan River. This was my first road trip in Borneo and the countryside is not what I expected, the deep jungles and the bumpy little roads of my imagination are no more, instead there where miles and miles of palm oil plantations or scorched land. After a long trip we arrived on the banks of the river and were transported across in long boats, there are about a dozen other people all with companions or partners, hence my paying extra for a room. After putting our gear in our rooms we returned to the open sided dining room/bar for lunch before embarking on a tour up river. This is the reason why I chose ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah July 20th 2007

Kota Kinabalu is a pleasant and attractive city, which in total I spent about three days in, and enjoyed every bit of it. The first time however I was in from the Phillipines in the evening and gone by mid day the next day, still that was long enough to acquire a hang over, from two many beers with an English and a Hungarian lad I met at the hostel, still it was nice to be around other travellers again after 3 weeks with only myself to talk too. The hostel was ok I tend to avoid hostels unless I am looking for company or information, in this case it was both, I was pretty much on the way to the airport by 10 and on the plane at 12. Although Sarawak and Sabah are ... read more

Everytime I try to write this blog a computer crashes on me. I left Siquijor Island at about 8 the guy who I did the tour with picked me up and dropped me on the jetty roughly an hour later I was on the dock in Dumaguette buying a ticket to Cebu via Bohol, I had to wait a while so I went and bought some postcards, had some lunch etc, before heading back to the dock. I splurged a little and got a first class ticket which gave me the whole section to myself which was pleasant, it was just before arriving in Bohol that I realised I had already missed my flight back to Clark, so I had stressful night until the travel agents opened and I was able to get a flight on ... read more
