We woke early this morning had a shower and wandered down stairs for a breakfast of cornflakes and toast before eventually leaving for the sanctuary at 8am the house dog Jones joined us for the trip as he apparently does every morning, the drive was interesting, we passed through the bustle of the village before avoiding herds of cows and various types of local transport, driven in a crazy fashion so familiar to developing countries. The sanctuary is located in the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Conservation Park so there are a variety of animals most of which are indigenous to Cambodia but not all. All however have been rescued from the exotic pet or the meat trade. Our first day was spent learning our roles and duties and taking a very informative tour of the park beginning ... read more

We checked out of the hotel just before midday and waited in the lobby for a cab to the airport, while we were there a grossly fat man came down with his Thai girlfriend, he was a disgusting disgrace who couldnt be bothered doing up his shirt which resulted in his fat belly hanging out. He was making the girl pour him scotches and rub his fat neck, it was offensive so we waited outside rather than look at him. The ride to the airport took quite a while because the traffic is pretty bad especially along Sukhumvit Road, check in seemed to take a lot longer than normal mainly I think due to all Air Asia flights being processed at only a couple of counters. We then went and grabbed a bite to eat before ... read more

We headed down stairs to indulge in the buffet breakfast about 8.30am unfortunately I find Asian breakfasts are rarely satisfying, especially when you have to listen to a loud mouthed aussie clown going on and on about how he would be the next Thai pop star blah blah blah. We checked out at 9am and strolled out the front of the hotel to organise a taxi to the train station, the employee out the front asked us where we were going today, when I told him he said "Why don’t you take a taxi" it only cost $50 and would save us much hassle and time as we wouldn’t have to buy tickets or wait for the trains scheduled departure time and taxi's are much faster than the train. The landscape was a bit dull but ... read more

Our trip from Adelaide to Bangkok was reasonably hassel free, after locking up the house we headed to the bus stop down the road catching the J1 directly to the airport. I was pretty happy with the seats we were issued, there were only two on each side of the plane and we were right at the back, apart from a few screaming kids in the vicinity it was a pleasant ride through to Singapore. In Singapore we had only a brief transit of about an hour before we board our onflight to KL, which took less than an hour, a brief taxi ride to our hotel near the Low Cost Carrier Terminal, the room was extremely tiny but clean and comfortable. By the time we arrived we had been travelling for about 12 hours. It ... read more

Arrived at the meeting place near the Inman Valley hall early on a sunday morning (27/9/2009), I was feeling unwell which hadnt improved by the time the buses dropped the walkers at the trail head on Tugwell Rd. The walk was mainly through pleasant farm land with the odd hill along the way and intermitant rain. The highlight of the walk came after a steep climb through a farmers paddock, we emerged on Hancock Rd not far from the historical ruined old church and graveyard. From here it was about 5 kilometres through Second Valley Forest and along the main road to Inman Valley. The walk was pleasant and very taxing but the weather could have been better. Sunday 23 October 2009, this is the last walk I will do this season the distance is roughly ... read more

I returned to the Heysen trail Sunday (23/08/2009) for the Waitpinga to Victor Harbor leg. This section was about 19km and took four and a half hours on a beautiful 20 degree centigrade day. About eight kilometres of this walk was along the cliffs not far from Victor Harbor which were inceredibly dramatic and spectacular. Unfortunately I took my small camera and the batteries ran out so missed some great shots. After a brief stop for lunch at lovely Kings Beach we began a tough and at times unpleasant trudge up from the beach before following a couple of roads while battling a strong headwind. Eventually we entered a wooded area between two farms which was extremely overgrown so some dodging and weaving was necessary before finally emerging on Waitpinga road. From here it was an ... read more

Well after a few health ailments I am heading back on the trail this weekend (27 July) to complete the Balquidder to Waitpinga section of the trail. After driving for more than 2 hours to reach the meeting point at Newlands Head I registered for the walk and mounted one of the 3 buses heading for the start point at the corner of Callawonga and Tunk Head Roads. I joined the fast group as is the norm and we headed off, the first few kilometres was along the borders of Balaquidder property until the trail before crossing a neighbouring property. We followed a creek between hills before reaching the coastline. We were greeted by some fantastic scenery as we skirted the coast climbing over headlands and crossing the odd creek. Eventually we reached a small cove ... read more

24 May 2009 In rainy weather Ruth and I drove the two hours from our home to the Trail head at Tapanappa and were greeted with stunning vistas of the Southern Ocean and Tunkalilla Beach in the distance. We registered with the walk group and climbed on the bus for the ride to the start point at Cobblers Hill where we visited the smelly camp toilet before setting off by ourselves. The first 2 kilometres to Eagle Waterhole were down hill along bush trails and was quite easy and pleasant although a light rain fell along the way. From here we climbed a steep little hill along a car track for about 1.5 km's before I had this bright idea for a short cut, I miss read the map and we followed a track heading towards ... read more

After a few months of planning I am heading up to Parachina to walk the northern most section of the Heysen Trail. I am doing this walk over 4 days with Tim, Mark and Marks dad Kim, the plan was to leave at 5 am on Thursday (14/5) and drive the 5 hours up to the Prairie Hotel at Parachilna where we will be staying, hopefully we will be on the trail to complete the first section to Aroona Ruins by 11am. Well that didnt happen mainly because it took so long to get through Brachina Gorge in my little car that there was no way we could drop the cars in place and finish the walk before dark. So we checked out the trail heads and then headed to the Blinman hotel for a drink ... read more

5 April 2009 This morning Tim and I drove our cars down to Myponga to complete another leg of the Heysen Trail, two hours passed from the time I left home till the time we began the walk, almost all legs closer to home have now been completed. The first hour of the walk was though the Yulte Conservation Park and involved some steep and difficult climbs through virgin native bush and was as enjoyable as it was beautiful. After that it was three hours of slogging up and down hills in farmers paddocks. There were a few nice views of Victor Harbor and the ocean from the top of Mt Cone and we saw a variety of farm animals and the odd kangaroo or two. At one stage we passed a firing range where groups ... read more
