The trip to Esphahan was initially uneventful, an early start was required as we had 500km to cover, Hassan drove like a maniac as he had to be in Isfahan at a certain time. Just after the Yadz turn off he got a call from the agent saying the stupid American's wished to fly to Yazd instead and should be at the airport to collect them at 3pm. Well there was no way in hell he could take me to Esphahan and then pick them up on time and for a moment I thought I would be unloaded on the roadside. This did not happen over the course of 3 or 4 days I have found him to be a kind and honest person and believe we have developed a true friendship, he proceed to drive ... read more

We left Yazd at 7am. Hassan has been telling me a bit about his life , he was born in India to Iranian parents and lived there until he came to Iran for his sisters wedding in 1979, he then got caught up in the revolution and was not allowed to return to India. A call up to the army followed and action in the Iran-Iraq war and a run in with a landmine. He then returned to the airforce after convalesence and finally was free to return to India in 1988. He married here and his wife wont go to India so he visits every year or two. I saw a dead wolf on the side of the road, its the first one I have seen outside of the zoo, Iran also has Asiatic Cheetahs. ... read more

Mr Medhi took me to the bus station first thing and got me a ticket to Yadz, 5 boring hours later I checked into my 'hotel', flea pit is a more apt description, but at $7 a night who am I to complain. I dumped my bags in my cubicle and started the walk described in the Lonely Planet, visiting the Water Museum which describes the creation of the thirty thousand underground canals criss crossing the Iranian desert, similar to those Ruthie and I saw in Turpan, in the Gobi Desert. After that the Jamah (Friday) Mosque via an icecream store they are everywhere here, to the old city, I followed the directions for a while to little avail as I was totally lost in the maze. Eventually I found Alexanders Prison (I doubt he ever ... read more

Monday morning was madness but thanks to Ruthy was finally in the money and making an insane dash to the Oman's Seeb International Airport, its amazing what a cabbie will do for an extra $5. I am honestly amazed at the lack of compassion for my difficult circumstances from fellow westerner traveller and was disappointed at the middle aged Australian couple who went on and on about how there son got stuck in the Sudan for two weeks without money but offered me no help. Yet dozens of Arabs and Indians have shown the type of kindness that is unknown in western countries, Jill you hit the nail dead on the head, Australia aint what it used to be in regard to helping others. By 12.30 I was in Dubai and catching a cab back to ... read more

I took the bus down to a place called Sur those of you who watched the Amazing Race the other day will know what I am talking about. The trip took about 5 hours and went through some pretty arid country full of craggy peaks and camels. I was happily chatting away with an Omani bloke who wanted to practice his English, who kindly escorted me to the hotel when we arrived. Sur like all of Oman is a very attractive place the town has a couple of nifty loking castles and an attractive dhow harbour. Some believe this port town was the home of the mythical Sinbad. I came to Sur to do the turtle tour to Ras Al-Jinz, where I hoped to see the Green Turtles crawl out of the sea and lay their ... read more

Had a great day today the guy in the Internet Cafe had my photo software on his machine and he has burned me copy of all my photo's which I will airmail home in the next week. It is bloody hot here today and the place I plan to visit tommorrow registered 43 degrees. So I aint looking forward to the trip down there. I went to the souk which was easily the best yet, I found heaps of presents for Ruthy, I was so excited about the perfume bottles I rang her and in 16 minutes we were on the phone decided to go to New Zealand early next year so I am happy with that. Anyway getting back to the souk there was an excellent range of quality goods although they are more expensive ... read more

Sometimes common sense should prevail but unfortunately today was not the day. I taxied to the airport this morning on time and said my farewells to Nur on arrival, he has a group of Syrian friends that seems to grow all the time, having lived there as a kid and speaking Arabic helps. I got my flight without problems a Scottish hostie even gave me an extra meal I must look pretty pitiful, with my ragged clothes unshaven face and cropped hair. I arrived in Dubai went to the correct bus station and caught the right bus even got a double seat to myself so all was going well. On arrival I got a cab driven by a dirtbag Pakistani who kept going on about gay sex, the freak, and went to the border, I was ... read more

About 99% of the cars on Sana a's roads would be sitting in a wrecking yard at Wingfield, I can not believe the heap I was in made it to the airport, again it was a scary half hour. Flew to Dubai and sat in the Irish Village bar for three hours talking to an English bloke who told me about the local Chinese prostitutes, he was a nice enough bloke, who had just spent about 5 weeks in Oz and was on the way home, he shouted me a Guinness which was might pleasing considering they were going for $12 a pop. My first impressions of Doha was the heat (40 degrees) quickly followed by all the buildings going up, it looks like a pretty nice town, but more on that later. I found the ... read more

My French friends are back from Thilla and we had a good chat last night (see photo). All this travelling rough in dodgy countries finally caught up with me this morning, I was attempting to get to Manakah a couple of hours east of Sana a and being a cheapscate and not wanting to pay for a tour I was in a share taxi with 9 others. My taxi proceeded to have a head on with another car I am in a bit of shock and feeling a little sick and sore but I am ok. I wont be catching anymore taxi's except to the airport now. Not sure what I am going to do with myself for the next few days, I am eager to get out of Yemen. I feel much more positive today ... read more

Left for the airport monday morning the flight was meant to leave at 8am ofcourse it didnt but the 5 hour delay was not so bad because I met Japanese lad named Taka who I have been travelling with since. The service on the plane consisted of a mint and two glasses of water (flash back to Kyrgiz Air in 2004), so I didnt end up eating for 11 hours, strangely the plane flew over Sayun went all the way to a place called Al Gayda near the Omani border (see map below) dropped half the people off then picked up more and then flew to Sayun (Sayoon). Ended up being a long annoying flight, however as soon as the plane decended over Wadi Hadramawt the incredible scenery blew away any annoyance in second. The wadi ... read more
